  1. I know a couple others, as well. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  2. Update: Meghan, JT and I had a nice talk today. I think things will calm down a bit. I could be proven wrong, but I think we'll do ok. Regarding the surfboard jump: JT says that he did look for traffic below before jumping. He was apparently trying to jump the surfboard down, holding it between his legs. Not the brightest idea (he knows that, I think), but I don't think it was particularly malicious. In short, it sounded to me more like foolishness than arrogance. At any rate, I'd appreciate if we knocked off the threats and attacks at this point. Thanks! -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  3. Hey! I resemble that remark! I wonder what the percentage of Libertarian BASE jumpers is? -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  4. I tend to agree with you. I'd prefer neither, and to actually _gain_ some freedom, but I think that Kerry is even more anti-Liberty than Bush. Now if we could just get that skydiver from Texas elected.... -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  5. I did a bunch of canopy test jumps a few years ago with static lines, using the "remove right away" method you suggest. Enforcement on static lines is pretty much non-existent (the bungee guys, for example, hook their setup directly to the bridge), but the official word from the State Engineer is "please don't". I'm not sure if the local cops have heard this or not (I suspect not). Your call. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  6. It's here, on Johnny's site. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  7. We have. Last time I saw the high school "BASE club" they were PCAing. Still, I've seen actual static lines used, too. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  8. I'm sure it's more valuable to the Israeli's. I'd also argue that it's more _threatened_, at leat from a historical perspective. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  9. I'm using Safari (Apples mac-only browswer). I just played with it in IE, too. Right clicking (actually it's a control-click on the mac) to copy works just fine, though. Thanks! -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  10. Some discussion of the funky URL thing here. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  11. I've noticed in several places lately (once in PM, several times in this thread that some long URL's are getting truncated, with a "..." inserted into the middle. They still work when clicked on, but the whole URL is not shown, so if you cut and paste the URL into the top of a browser window, you end up with a 404 error. Is this a bug or a feature? -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  12. I used it and it worked. The link in your post isn't right, somehow, though. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  13. In Norway last summer I got to see Shaun (the SG designer) and Petter (in an S3) doing roughly equivalent flights. Petter in the S3 definitely had better glide, but without seeing the same pilot trying each suit in turn (or better yet, becoming expert with both suits) it's going to be very difficult to make a "fair" comparison. For what it's worth, I think that Robi is probably right on the speed=lift thing, although if someone wants to land a suit, they may want a Loic-style (i.e. slow and floaty) suit. Also, note that a larger wing area (and resultant lower wingloading) appears to help a lot in getting the suit flying sooner from a zero airspeed launch. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  14. I was actually wondering if it might be the same guy. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  15. Hmmm. You mean actions like being the party of the "Solid South" during the height of the Klan years? -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  16. I'd love to hear more of your thoughts on this. I tend to think that legal sites have allowed us a great training ground for the latest generations of BASE jumpers to learn without taking the (often massive) risks that the pioneers (like you) had to. Perhaps that's just mainstreaming the sport too much, though. Hmmmm. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  17. But at least you can BASE jump and get a great tan all in one stop. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  18. No joke. I found this sign in the window of a tanning salon downtown today. For those of you who don't want to check out my digital photos on the linked page, here's the text of the sign: Is this the future of BASE? Is this where we're going with "mainstreaming" the sport? Or perhaps there really is a tanning salon operator here who's just way more hardcore than any of us, and has been flicking this thing for the last two and a half decades? Maybe I'll stop by tomorrow when they're open and see if I can sign up. Heck, if I'm lucky, maybe I can get a tan, too. Thoughts? -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

I don't think anyone had any problem with that one.
  20. Hmmm. Is Robi there, by any chance? -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  21. Last I heard, the manufacturer was recommending a "ball up for a few seconds" type pull. Seemed to be working pretty well for him (on BASE jumps) and ought to be a good technique for skydives, too. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

By including them you've virtually guaranteed that BASE jumpers will fixate on them. Kind of ruined your art, there, I think. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  23. Attention all: This thread has plenty of personal attacks (I'm working on editing), and some threats of physical violence. Let's please keep those off this forum. Thanks! -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  24. If you review the "before you post" guidelines above, you'll see that I specifically enumerated two examples of site names that would be allowed to stay. They are the bridge in Idaho and the cliff near Stavanger. I think I explained my reasoning there, but if it's not clear enough, start a separate thread and we'll discuss it. Thanks! -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  25. Yes. There has been some discussion of this with the state agency that regulates wilderness guides and outfitters. I, for one, hope it doesn't come to that. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
