  1. Can you post a pic? I've seen things that sound like that before. A tower engineer told me he wouldn't come within 100 feet of them if they were on. I think they were putting off a ton of nasty radiation. My strategy has been to get by them as soon as possible. And if they're at the top, just jump well below them. Anyway, none of that is factual, or based on your particular tower, so take it with a grain of salt. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  2. Please explain how. My understanding is that Fascism and Socialism both entail a lot of government intervention in the economy. The general difference is that in Fascism it's ostensibly done for the "good" of the state, where in Socialism it's ostensibly done for the "good" of the people. In general, I'd say that: Fascism = No Personal Freedom, No Economic Freedom Socialism = Personal Freedon, No Economic Freedom And for comparison, in my little mental chart, the other two quadrants are: Conservative (i.e. Republican in US politics) = No Personal Freedom, Economic Freedom Libertarian = Personal Freedom, Economic Freedom. In my mind the "economic opposite" of Socialism is either modern Conservatism or Libertarianism. Socialism and Fascism are "economic equivalents", but "personal" or "social" opposites. Hope that came out how I meant it... -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

  5. This is, in my opinion, the best tested of the "building escape" rigs. I'd guess that from the 15th floor, it would be able to get you to the ground reasonably safely (meaning, you'd likely survive, perhaps with some broken bones, depending on your landing area and obstacles). Still, if you really want to know, you ought to just contact one of the NYC BASE jumpers. They'd probably be more than willing to check out your possible escape routes in exchange for you letting them into the building after hours. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  6. Building floors are different heights from building to building, not just country to country. I've jumped two 37 story buildings, a few blocks apart, one of which measured 435' at exit, and the other of which measured 358'. Counting floors is a horribly inaccurate way to estimate altitude. Especially when your counting less than 20 floors. Down there, the difference in altitude could make for a very bad day. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  7. Are you going forward faster at the same time as falling faster? In my opinion (just my opinion), it's harder (and more fun) to achieve a better glide angle than to just slow down the fall rate. Obviously, it's very useful to learn to control _all_ the parameters of your flight (like fall rate) to the greatest degree you can. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  8. I've noticed that I refrain from posting about a quarter of the things I type in the "post" box. I get to the end, and just decide I'm not really adding anything to the discussion. Does anyone else do this? Or am I just neurotic? -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

  10. That was pretty offensive. Why don't you take a little break? Discussions about controversial topics can be held without resorting to slamming people's dead family. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  11. The folks who pioneered the smoking pants you describe have all pretty much gone over to the Phoenix Fly gear. It's reportedly a significant improvement over the "rain suit with holes" setup. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

Actually, I'm thinking that fatality ocurred on one of the towers you're looking at. I've seen the one that happened at, and it's in a group, right next to a major roadway. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

i would keep the toogle in my hand but still flare on the risers in both sides(ofcourse i would have released the brake).cant see that that could give you such a unstabel canopy... You really have to practice the "one riser one toggle" flare, if you want to do it effectively. I would certainly _not_ try an emergency landing that way if you haven't practiced it. I'm partial to the method that Faber described. That's worked for me. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

  23. I'd generally agree with you. If you do a PCA and have a 180 (or do a floater), and you're not dead center, you do have some chance to strike the steel. If you are dead center? I'd bet you couldn't hit it, but I've never seen anyone do that, so I'm just speculating. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
