180s - Risers or Toggles on big canopy and small canopy
TomAiello replied to CanuckInUSA's topic in Archive
Have a look at this BLiNC Post of Dwain's. I have used Dwain's method (both rear risers, then release one and pull down the other front riser) on multiple (probably around 10) greater than 150 offheadings, and avoided strike on all but one of them. Edited to add in the quote of Dwain's post. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com -
Is that used with a mesh slider? I wonder how it would be with no slider. Hmmm. Maybe something to test out next week. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

Do you feel that the 6 to 1 Student to Instructor Ratio had any effect on the quality of instruction? I know that most other instructors limit their courses to 2 students per instructor maximum (this weekend I saw no one else with more than 1 student per instructor, actually). Anyway, I'm just trying to sort out if folks feel they get better value spending more time in a large group, or less time one on one with the instructor. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

So, the toggles are mounted on the mud flaps? So that they can be grabbed immediately after pitching? I'm trying to visualize the system. Thanks! -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

Performance of canopies in flight is virtually uneffected by changes in PC (perhaps a very slight difference between a 48" and a d-bagged canopy with no PC). Pick your PC for other factors--not for it's effect on canopy flight. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

Does anyone have a photo of a setup like this? I'm having trouble picturing how you could exit with the toggles already in hand, and still pitch the PC. Thanks! -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

I don't know anything about the gear, but I do know lots about the seller. He got me my BASE number. He has many friends in the BASE world. His jumping is slowing down a bit now that he's a father. He's one of the good guys. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

Hmmm. Do you know where the article originated? It just seems to contradict itself. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com -

I actually know a jumper who broke a window to exit, and made anonymous reparations for the damage. Pretty cool, if you ask me. Definitely in the minority, though. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

I've been a computer junkie for at least 15 years. The only computer thing that revolutionized my life as much as say, a cell phone, was a laptop with wireless networking. Suddenly, the computer isn't something you go to that interrupts your life--it's now just a seamless part of your life. My vote: laptop with wireless network. I'd get a Mac, because in addition to being cooler, they're way better, but that's just a personal preference. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

That's what I'd do. The slider makes sooooo much more difference than any amount of reefing/folding/rolling. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

Why do you want a box? DW had a pretty cool, super lightweight PC-1xx mount. He basically just screwed the thing through the top of a lightweight helmet (I think it was one of those surfing helmets that have crossed over into freeflying--what are they called?). Anyway, it gave him a fairly low profile, super lightweight camera helmet. Of course, with his skill level he didn't really have to worry about the camera getting damaged from a bad landing. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

And you are taking the past actions of the government as a good indicator that it can do good in this situation? Why should we trust the government that "allowed Racism and Oppression to go unchecked and in some cases actually nurtured it" to do any better now? No thanks, I'd prefer to leave important things in the hands of the people, rather than some federal bureaucracy. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

Imagine if you were a Berber. An ethnic group pretty much indigenous to Africa, yet often sporting fair skin and light coloring. I've often wondered what would happen if a multi-generational South African such as yourself applied for Affirmative Action assistance in the US on the basis of being an "African-American." -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

The fact that any individual is in a disadvantaged position is insufficient grounds for government action. In my mind, for the government to act requires _much_ more justification than a simple social engineering agenda. Once you invoke the government to redress perceived social wrongs, you open the door for a whole slew of other government activities, all of them (again, in my opinion) unnecessary. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

Do you do this for terminal jumps? I would think that you'd be taking some whippers if you do. I've been doing this for all kinds of jumps for several years. The terminal openings aren't bad. I've found that the slider size/material/control is a huge determiner of terminal opening speed, and that folding/flaking changes have largely (for me) fallen into the category of "fine tuning". Almost invariably, I roll the outer 6 cells into the center, then wrap the center cell around the entire pack job. I do this for jumps ranging from terminal to about 200 feet (below 200 feet I open the outer cells up as well, but still wrap the nose around). I'm pretty happy with this method, and use it as my standard (I'm constantly tinkering with my pack job, so my "standard" only gets used on about 75% of my jumps). -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

Ditto. I'm curious what my Filipino grandmother did in her first 25 years, in Manila, that makes me somehow culpable for the crimes of the "White Man" here in the U.S. The same question arises when considering two of my other grandparents. Hmmm. Collectivism breaks down real fast when folks start migrating and groups start intermarrying. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
