    TF Roll Call

Last night was better. We started around 8pm and made our last load sometime after 4am. Conditions were quite good all night. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  2. How high is that tower? What delay did u take? 480 feet. I did several silly jumps off that thing quite a while back. If I recall correctly, the most I ever took off it was right around 4, but I don't think that was the jump Yexotay was talking about (because I seem to recall that one having a bit shorter canopy ride). -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

  6. Marc, This is a personal attack. Please review the Forum Rules. Personal Attacks on other posters are not allowed (that includes calling someone a jerk when you really do think they are a jerk). I understand why you're angry, and I think most everyone else here does, too. Personally, I think you're totally justified in being angry. Still, you must follow the rules of these forums. Thanks! -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

  8. Guys, let's ease down on slamming each other here. I'd prefer to avoid having to pull out a bunch of one line "oh, yeah, well you're a cheese eating surrender monkey" type comments. There's plenty of that over in Speakers' Corner. Let's try to keep this forum about BASE, okay? Thanks. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

  10. I understand your point, and I'm actually on your side of that debate. BASE has a rich history, and part of that history is the term "BASE." The other side of the argument is that the term BASE can have negative connotations for some policy makers and law enforcers, and that by re-branding it as "backcountry parachuting" or "para-alpinisme" or whatever, you can try to get a clean slate to start from. You can also draw in support from non-BASE jumping constituencies that are already organized (like USHGA, for example, and I believe the Para-Alpinisme guys are organized as part of their national mountaineering club (equivalent to the American Alpine Club). Like I said, I'm with you on this one, but I can see the other side of the argument too. Probably best to hash that out in a separate thread, if you want to do that, rather than side track this one. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

  12. The Para-Alpinisme Association actually pre-dates the ABP. You can search through the archives of this forum and find the announcements of the formation of both organizations. The Para-Alpinisme Association actually had a general call to a formation meeting, in which people were invited to come and help form the organization, set it's goals, etc. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

    Dragon Canopy

What is the rush? You might consider buying the Dragon and ordering a modern canopy at the same time, and then re-selling the Dragon when you get the newer gear. Or, you could keep the Dragon for "2nd rig" use (water landings, gear confiscation jumps, etc), since you wouldn't be nearly as tempted to use it on the more technical stuff if you had another canopy in hand. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

    Dragon Canopy

I wouldn't recommend it, but if you're careful about what you use it for, you can probably get away with it. Just ask yourself "if I've only got my overloaded Dragon, and my buddy calls and wants to take me downtown for a building with a street landing, will I be able to say 'no'?" -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

    Dragon Canopy

The Dragon is an older Vertigo canopy, which is no longer in production. It's basically a re-trimmed skydiving canopy (I think a lightning, but I could be wrong on that) with some extra reinforcement. In my experience, the pressurization slider down was extremely poor. Note: Do not confuse the new Rock Dragon canopy from Apex (which is still available from them) with the older and no longer available Dragon canopy from Vertigo. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  18. Um, did you read the thread about Jeb in NYC? I saw several people expressing negative opinions there. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  19. Is Troy really sponsoring him for that kind of stunt? That seems pretty lame, and not the kind of thing that Troy would be supporting. Defacing a national monument with stickers is just wrong. Anybody know if GoFast! is really part of this business? I'll see if I can ask around and find out. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  20. This has not been my experience. I've seen well maintained and properly set toggles fire on opening. In every instance that I've seen this happen, they have been pin toggles (closed off with a pin rather than the cloth stub at the top of the toggle). Yoshi, what kind of toggles are you using? -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  21. I think that you've hit the nail on the head. Now you understand the debate. I think the response to your point would be that if you begin giving the input before the canopy is flying, it will begin responding the very moment that it begins flying--just as it begins to move forward it will begin to turn. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

    info request

240ish. I have packed a Raven III into both a 220ish sized and a 240ish sized container, and it was much better fit into the 240ish. I'd recommend going with velcro (with good side stiffeners) for that. Pins are much more sensitive to fit issues. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

    Oslo base jumpers?

Try posting here. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  24. Ask some of the other, more experienced jumpers (or instructors) at your DZ if they see any problems with your jumping, skills, safety, etc. It's always possible that he really does see something wrong, and you're being too sensitive about it. Try checking in with other people to see what they think. If no one else sees anything you're doing as a problem, maybe just sit down with him and ask him what he thinks you're doing wrong. Don't take this the wrong way, but I've seen lots of students who think they've got everything under control, when really they are just this side of a being a big divot in the ground. You definitely want to be sure you're not one of them before you decide this is simply a personality issue. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  25. The theory: An unvented canopy takes longer to reach full inflation. Prior to reaching full inflation, the canopy is not moving forward. However, it is evident to the jumper which direction the canopy is heading. The jumper can use this lag time to correct the canopy's heading before it fully inflates, and hence before it begins moving forward. I've met some experienced jumpers who actually put sliders up for low, solid objects, basically on this same premise. Note that I'm not saying this is my position--I'm just trying to explain the reasoning. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
