  1. Nick, You seem to be under the impression that I'm trying to (a) defend Jeb, or (b) argue that his actions were the most ethical and created good publicity for BASE. In fact, I'm doing neither of those things. I was simply observing that the reason that different people get different reactions may have to do with their personal presentation, and their personal (and stated) intentions. I'm not making any kind of statement, pro or con, about Jeb, this incident, or how either of the above interact with BASE ethics. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  2. You can find it by selecting "specs" out of the drop down menu at the left side of the CR main page. There's a chart there with area, aspect ratio, chord and span, pack volume and weight for the various Mojo sizes. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

    Sacramento news

There have been several bicycle cliff jumps. I was guessing that the one on the news in Sacramento was the one from last month, because Miles is from Northern California, originally, and because he's generally a high publicity jumper, so you'd expect to see him in the news. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

    Sacramento news

I think Miles did a bicycle cliff jump when he was in Alaska last month. I'm guessing that was the one they were talking about. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  6. Nice job, Russel. If you live in the LA area, go buy him a beer. There are at least 9 very tired BASE jumpers who've either just gotten home, or are almost there by now. We had minor issues, a lot of heavy lifting and hauling, the use of a furniture dolly to move a jumper up a steep slab of rock, minor hypothermia, a total loss of light, and more than 24 hours of driving, all adding up to one of the most exhausting one day BASE expeditions I've ever participated in. Props to all who shared this adventure. So, when are you doing the B and A? -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  7. The short answer is that it helps all of us to jump more often and more safely. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  8. Since the last person to jump this site has made around 600 posts on this forum, I'm going to have to say that you're wrong about that. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  9. Jeb doesn't go around taunting other BASE jumpers and trying to piss them off. That's the functional difference. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  10. This forum already exists on another site. It's called "Fight Club" and you need a password to enter it and argue. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

  12. Could you explain why you believe this to be so? Thanks! -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  13. Can you point out the post? The most recent one I see from Jeb was back in January. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  14. I've said it before, but I'll repeat it again here. The fundamental difference leading to the differing perceptions of various high profile BASE types is almost always how they present themselves to other jumpers. If you work hard to explain and communicate, you tend to get received well--like Dennis McGlynn, for example. If you don't really try either way, you tend to get a middling reaction--like Jeb Corliss, for example. If you work hard to taunt and antagonize other jumpers over this kind of thing, you get a more negative reaction. It's not that hard to figure it out. Whining that people have a negative impression of you, when you work hard to create that negative impression, is pretty darned silly. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  15. Can you explain what lead you to this conclusion? -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  16. ??? I'm a little confused at where you drew this conclusion from? -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

  18. edit to add: I'm reasonably confident in my Death Campers packing by the time they leave. Not so much with the traditional FJC students, but a lot of that depends on their previous training, pre-course practice, and preparation. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  19. When I very first wanted to get into BASE, I went looking around for information about what gear to order, and other gear questions. On the internet portion of my search, I found 3 good sources for helpful information. One was a set of articles written by some guy named Walt. The other two were people posting in a random internet forum who had the patience to answer questions from a new guy with a last name no one could pronounce. The first of those was some guy in Southern California named Nick, who ran the forum. (The other, if you're curious, was some Russian dude who lived in Washington, DC.) -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  20. Because there is no tailgate on many slider up packjobs, and line overs have been observed despite the slider. The differential stow, in theory, ought to help the canopy to achieve nose first expansion. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

    Tailgate

Spinning off of Mac's "just your knowledge" thread... There was some discussion about the purpose and function of the tailgate. Have a look here. The most relevant part is: -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  22. I've tried it. I used it for a while slider up. I decided it was a bit more trouble than the return, but I still think it might not be such a bad thing on slider up stuff. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
  23. I've had the opposite experience. I've found that direct control can greatly slow the openings, especially if you take a lot of the slider into the stow, or use a very tight stow. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

Perhaps that was why they came out to watch, then? That thread is still on the forum, and can be read by anyone, without logging in. Click here and you can read it. It's also still on the BLiNC forum here, which is also accessible to the public. The counters show that it has been read 426 times on BLiNC and 2487 times on Dropzone.com. That's quite a few people who might have heard about it. -- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
