TX Skydiving firm sued in student's death
Southern_Man replied to stratostar's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Incident thread indicated the AAD fired ane the canopy came out but was partially entangled with the jumper (who was spinning on his back). At least that's what I made of it. Cause of death was blunt force trauma. "What if there were no hypothetical questions?" -
TX Skydiving firm sued in student's death

Original Incident Thread Just for context. "What if there were no hypothetical questions?" -
Just to be clear, Gelvenor is the name of the fabric company, not the name of any particular fabric. The particular fabric is commonly referred to as Gelvenor but that is technically incorrect. They did use a different process to coat their canopies, which lead to it being less slick (and much easier to pack). That process was shut down as being environmentally noxious. Gelvenor Textiles still makes fabrics for sport and military parachutes but now uses a siliconizing process which is much like other fabric manufacturers. I haven't seen anything that indicates that the older Gelvenor fabric does not last as long. I personally own a Hornet, I''m not sure exactly when Gelvenor switched manufacturing processes or how many canopies Aerodyne made with the older material. Very sad, predictable but sad. "What if there were no hypothetical questions?"

Again this is an assertion, not a proof. This is a form of argumentation known as a rhetorical tautology where something is true just by virtue of it being repeated. It is not an especially effective form of apologetics. If you really want to engage in apologetics you really should at least attempt to learn some of the starting arguments. Does the US / EU middle class really matter anymore?
Southern_Man replied to shah269's topic in Speakers Corner
The "middle class" is Asia is still really, really poor compared to the middle class in the US and EU. It is expanding and wealthier than it used to be but it is starting from a really low base. So yes, the consumer class in the US and EU still matter. "What if there were no hypothetical questions?" -
This is Dogmatics, not apologetics. I feel like I am beating my head against the wall. "What if there were no hypothetical questions?"

Another story I read said the intruders knew the couple and were aware that her deceased husband (he was 58) had died of cancer and they were seeking drugs. "What if there were no hypothetical questions?" -
Appears to be expanding according to the best cosmological understanding. No end is expected. "What if there were no hypothetical questions?"

Some places will do your Category A jump as a tandem (and some even more). Are you sure you have a place that will let you jump before you turn 18? Many/most will not. Some will let you jump AFF but not tandem. Know what your possibilities are. Riding a motorcycle really means nothing. Not an equivalent experience. "What if there were no hypothetical questions?"

That would be Dogmatics, not apologetics. "What if there were no hypothetical questions?"

Most DZs have protocols for this sort of thing. Sometimes they are less formal. Go to the DZO and ask him to establish a protocol. "What if there were no hypothetical questions?"

I probably would have barely noticed. I work in a community mental health facility. It gives you a really, really wide definition of what fits into normal behavior. "What if there were no hypothetical questions?" -
I don't know what state you guys registered to vote in but I didn't have to show any sort of ID to register in VA. I didn't have to show anything to anybody, I can just fill in a form and send it in to the registrar's office. I do have to disclose my social security number, but that is it. Conveniently the place I work we are required to ask people periodically if they wish to vote, so I don't even have to leave my building to pick up a form. SOPA (WARNING: Experimental thread; highly moderated)

I briefly referred upthread to musicians I listen to who give away tons of their music for free and encourage its distribution. I bring it up again because we are talking about alternative models of distribution and the costs/risks associated with them. I listen mostly to jam bands, who allow people to record and trade their music for free as long as they adhere to whatever policies the band has developed (examples: if a particular concert is released commercially then you must stop distributing that concert, some bands allow soundboard patches, others only audience recordings to circulate). Anyhow, most of these come to me via the live music archive at archive.org. The free trading of music has introduced me to all sorts of bands, some of whom I have seen in concert, bought merchandise from, bought commercial recordings of, and introduced friends to their music. The bands that allow it obviously see it as a win. One side benefit is that I believe piracy of commercial recordings is vastly reduced due to community pressure. I've just never come across people reproducing, uploading, downloading, etc. the commercial material of, for example, Grace Potter and the Nocturnals. The positive peer pressure not to do so would be overwhelming. Anyway, just something to think about. "What if there were no hypothetical questions?" -
I'm against primaries in general (I think Andy's link is to a thread I posted). Actually I'm not against primaries per se, just against the state being involved in setting them up and running them. Anyhow, Virginia has some interesting developments this primary season: 1. open primary (it always has been) which means you can vote in the primary of any party of your choosing. 2. Republicans are requiring anybody who wants to vote in the Republican primary to sign a loyalty oath, stating that they will support the Republican candidate in November. If you don't sign, you don't get to vote in their primary. I don't have any issue with this as a private organization but since they are using state resources to conduct their private affair, it raises all sorts of entanglement questions with regards to equal protection, voting rights, etc. 3. Restrictive ballot access measures. Only Paul and Romney qualified for the ballot, so if you want to support Gingrich, Huntsman, Perry, or Santorum then you don't really have that option. Just yesterday or today a judge allowed Huntsman, Perry, and Santorum to join Gingrich's lawsuit even though none of them even submitted petitions to get on the ballot. Again, I don't have any issue with the way republicans want to run their own internal party matters but I don't see any reason for the state to be involved in lawsuits over such nonsense. 'Citizens United' Ruling Opened Floodgates On Groups' Ad Spending
Southern_Man replied to Darius11's topic in Speakers Corner
Interesting development. I'd say on the face this is not a decision that is going to stand. 14th Amendment jurisprudence is generally guided by this footnote from United States v. Carolene Products: There may be narrower scope for operation of the presumption of constitutionality when legislation appears on its face to be within a specific prohibition of the Constitution, such as those of the first ten amendments, which are deemed equally specific when held to be embraced within the Fourteenth… "What if there were no hypothetical questions?" -

Bah, the truth is the U.S. gets very little of their energy needs from the Persian Gulf and through the straights. Not sure why we whould be the ones making sure the shipping lanes are clear. Let Japan and China take care of it, that's where most of the oil goes (yes, I understand that it is a global market and we will pay more even if our supply isn't directly from there). Or let the exporting nations in the Gulf take care of it. "What if there were no hypothetical questions?"
