I'm thinking about making a trip down to San Francisco in December and get some tube time in at IflySFBay. I start my A licence free fall progression training next spring once the weather here is better. Any thoughts about the place? Instructors? Local hotels? Places to eat? Things to do while not flying? Thanks for any advice and Blue Skies! ~H Cause they know, and so do I, The high road is hard to find A detour to your new life, Tell all of your friends goodbye

I’ve really been trying to figure the reason why myself. But here are some ideas. Maybe I dive because I experience such a wide range of emotions while doing so. I get the anticipation and sleepless nights days before I jump. The Butterflies in the Stomach and having to run to the bathroom every 15 minutes for an hour before the jump. The “what the fuck am I doing” feeling while getting into the airplane. The “I’m scared shitless now” feeling when the door opens and I look down. The “disconnected from everything” feeling once falling. The “nothing else matters now but my chute” feeling while falling. The “feeling of relief” after my chute opens cleanly. The “this view is AWESOME” feeling while flying my chute. The “this is still AWESOME” feeling while flying my landing pattern. The “feeling of accomplishment” after landing safely. And most of all… that un-explainable connection with other people who are doing the same thing. Greetings Bro! I’ve been dealing with the D word for years myself. Started at a young age for me when my parents got a divorce. I’m 47 now. Been thru my share of shitty marriages. Always getting married for the wrong reasons. Tried all kinds of meds, therapy, group sessions….what ever! Ya de ya da. Sort of came to a conclusion myself after years of trail and error. Kind of funny, but it’s the same as what previous posters said. For me it’s all about a healthy diet, exercise, and getting out into the fresh air. And diet, I don’t mean cutting portions down on the crappy stuff, but making a life style change and eating healthy every day. More fresh vegetables, fruit, whole grains (avoid the processed bleached wheat) and lean meat. Mostly fish and poultry. Grilled NOT fried. And stay away from processed foods. Good exercise is a must. You don’t have to make a workout video or become a body builder, but daily activity like walking, swimming, free weights will do a body good. Getting the heart rate up a little is the key. If ya can’t get outside to do any of that, just running in place a few minutes a day will do the job. Maybe try sit-ups and push-ups. Or a set of stairs and walk up and down a few times each day. Also you need to find your place! Let me reiterate… Every human being needs to feel needed. It’s a sense of doing good work for humanity. Find out what works for you. Maybe it’s at work, or community volunteering. Maybe work with kids through the Big Brothers Organizations, a local food bank, working at a senior center once in a while. Find out what it is that gives you and your soul a feeling of well being. Random acts of kindness. Maybe look at things from a spiritual point of view. What ever it is for you….Find it! Good sleep is a must. The brain can’t function on no or little sleep. Are you reaching REM? The recommended 8 hours a day is only a recommendation. Your body will tell you how much sleep it needs. Also, find a social network. Just being around happy people will help tremendously. There are good people out there! You may have to look around, and kiss a lot of frogs but good people are there if you look hard enough. Find someone you can trust. Another thing, don’t get in a rut doing just one activity all the time. You have to mix things up a little to keep activities interesting. Ride a bike, walk in a park, take a hike in the woods, go swimming, join a club. Back to a healthy diet, take daily supplements and vitamins . I use an over the counter natural supplement called 5-HTP. It’s a naturally occurring amino acid that balances serotonin levels in the brain. I’ve been taking it for over 6 month and I feel much better then before. Yes, I do have good days and bad days just like everyone else. It’s not a miracle pill. But the lows are not as low as they use to be. Last week I had my yearly physical and blood work. My Dr. says I’m a model of good health for my age bracket. If you wanna PM me, I’d be glad to share more. Remember….you are not going at this alone! My home DZ is Snohomish also. I'm working thru my progression. I passed my Static RCP today and my first 5 second free fall. Scared the crap out of me. My free fall was a train wreck. But hey, we all learn from out mistakes and get better. Kudos to Jayson (my instructor) today. Cool Dude and very committed to his students. ~Hold (m) Cause they know, and so do I, The high road is hard to find A detour to your new life, Tell all of your friends goodbye

Did Kari from UW find this Website?
HoldtheIce replied to HoldtheIce's topic in Introductions and Greets
She was one of my jumping partners last Saturday. She passed her first free fall. I told her about this site and how cool it is. I'm wondering if she had logged on. Congratulations Keri! ~M Cause they know, and so do I, The high road is hard to find A detour to your new life, Tell all of your friends goodbye -
barometric pressure question
HoldtheIce replied to HoldtheIce's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Thanks for the reply, that works for me. Yes I did confuse InHg to Millibars. My barometer has both scales and I looked at it wrong. What got me thinking, is my altimeter moves all the time. I zeroed it out on Saturday for my jumps. Now it reads 820 feet. The barometric pressure is changing here. It's falling. We have a storm front coming in from the coast. I now understand the direct relationship of my altimeter and my barometer on the wall. The lower the pressure, the more feet applied onto my altimeter. Thanks, and Blue Skys ~H Cause they know, and so do I, The high road is hard to find A detour to your new life, Tell all of your friends goodbye -
barometric pressure question
HoldtheIce replied to HoldtheIce's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
We all use barometric pressure altimeters, right? I was thinking, what is the difference in barometric pressure in Millibars between say 13 thousand feet and ground level. I know there are variables. I’m just looking for a ballpark figure. Normal barometric pressure on average days here at ground level in my DZ is about 29.5 MB. Welcome! Thanks again for serving!!! 40 isn't too late to start jumping. I'm 47 and I just started in July. I have 6 jumps now and am working thru my progression to my A license. Being 40 in the Military, you should be close to retirement, right? You will enjoy this board. Everyone here is a great help. It's a RUSH isn't it? Before you come down from that free fall buzz, get yourself signed up for your next jump. I started my Tantems back in July. Now I'm into my Static Line Progression. I did 2 more jumps this morning. I didn't pass my Static simulated RCP. On my second attempt, I dropped my head while reaching for the RC. OOPS ! But I had a great time failing the test. hahaha Scheduled to give it another try on two weeks. Newby Starting out...need equipment advice
HoldtheIce replied to HoldtheIce's topic in Gear and Rigging
Hi All, It's starting to get a little cold now, and I want to continue with my training program. I'm going to need some foul weather gear, e.g. goggles, neoprene face mask, gloves. Any recommendations? I’ve been looking around Ebay a little. Not much there for Skydiving….but there is a lot of stuff for motorcycles and snowmobiles. BTW, I'm in the Seattle area. Lot's of rain Thanks in advance. ~Hold Cause they know, and so do I, The high road is hard to find A detour to your new life, Tell all of your friends goodbye -
Greetings. I know exactly how you feel. This stuff is keeping me up at night. Doing training over is really a question you should ask your Instructor. Get the facts. My guess is....it all depends on where you are in your training and how long it's been between jumps.

Good Grief !!! Where do I start?
HoldtheIce replied to HoldtheIce's topic in Introductions and Greets
I couldn't wait to get home, log on and change my jump number to 4. Wahooo!! I did my first 5 hour class and Static line jump today at Snohomish. C.J. my instructor was the VERY BEST.....Thanks again CJ, Kudos to you. She was very informal, professional, and personable. She saw through my male ego (mainly from fear) and gave me the stuff straight up. She’s a no B.S. strong person. And my thick head needed that. I’m still riding that high right now, that unexplainable feeling that only you all can relate and appreciate. Thanks for all the advice each of you have given me, especially saying “Listen to your instructor”. I did and executed my jump……well. I got out, let go, flew my shoot and landed (PLF) without incident or injury. Yes, I sucked at my arch and I landed 100 years off the X, but for my first time by myself I am very pleased with the outcome. Onto my last static and my first assisted free fall. Maybe next week. Do a second jump? Well I guess that's all up to you and what you want to accomplish. Guess you have to really think about things and decide if you want to do. And how about a third and after? I’m onto my 5th jump (4th in this program). I jumped a tandem years ago. I have to admit, getting out of the airplane is the worst part for me, aka scared shitless. Once I’m out, I totally commit to the jump, relax, have fun, and go with it. I started my program with 3 tandem jumps before proceeding onto the static (which I’m doing on the 12th ). I guess Snohomish does it that way to get the students orientated with the getting out and the free fall. My second jump was the worst for me. I actually started the training and was no longer on a joy ride. I had to perform during the free fall. I started with the Simulated RCP, and Alt check, another Simulated RCP, Alt check, Tracking, Alt check, wait wait wait then at 6 k the wave off sign followed the RCP. That’s a lot to do on anyone’s second tandem. On the ride up, all I could do was think about what I was going to fark-up. Once out and into a good arch and a stable free fall, I relaxed and executed my script flawlessly. The getting out on the 3rd was a little better. The training script was almost the same except this time I did LH turns and RH turns instead of the Tracking. Again getting out on my 3rd I got the Butterflies. Heck I get the Butterflies watching vids on the You-tube. And 30 minutes before I jump, I have to make 3 trips to the shitter. What’s that all about? Guess if I need to make a trip to the hospital, my shorts will be clean. Maybe you can change training program a little and do a couple of tandems first. Good Luck and I hope you stick with it.
