  5. I was tested for STD's at local clinic (Fraser Valley, Vancouver B.C.) and when I went for results the nurse went thru all explaining they were negative- and then at the end told me I was positive for Hep C.............. holy crap. If I hadn't got STD's test-- would never have been diagnosed with Hep C. 8 years of getting regular liver enzymes blood work with normal results and no symptoms. I just had a complete blood work done with a "new"group of tests for Hep C and results are negative???? Totally unsure if I should laugh or cry SMiles

  13. You go back and buy those earings too I used to feel guilty raising a family and actually purchasing something for "me." Even if it was something like a bottle of shampoo or bubblebath- The point was it was "for me" - no one else in the family got to use it. Suppose I felt "I" was getting ripped off. Then skydiving filled me up to the brim with satisfaction/ so called "needs, wants and priorities" all changed. I figure skydiving is "getting involved." SMiles
  14. A plan to conduct a two-year scientific experiment in giving free heroin to a select group of addicts has people buzzing with dismay this week in the Downtown Eastside, Vancouver B.C. Canada Vancouver is home to a safe-injection site, it has been the subject of more publicity, more consultation and more debate than any initiative the city has undertaken in recent years. The object of the trial is to see if medically prescribed heroin serves to preserve addicts' health and quality of life better than prescribed methadone. In Europe, where such trials have been conducted, researchers found that addicts medicated with heroin experienced less homelessness and greater job stability than those receiving methadone. All in all, then, the experiment seems worthwhile. And it fits in neatly with the harm reduction aspect of Vancouver's four pillar approach to curing the drug ills that plague the city. Although safe-injection sites have grabbed the headlines, heroin maintenance for hard-core addicts is a viable form of harm reduction in that it ensures they receive a safe supply of the drug. The Downtown Eastside is already home to many drug users, social agencies and poor people, and the experiment will host up to 30 users an hour. Although the subjects in the experiment will be culled from those living in the Downtown Eastside, the trial will concentrate addicts in one small area. The trial will be conducted in a building one block from an elementary school, half a block from a daycare and next door to a recently opened building dedicated to alcohol- and drug-free housing. Surely the last thing those trying to go straight need is to be surrounded by users day and night. According to officials, federal government guidelines prohibit those involved in the experiment from speaking about it publicly. That might explain why we've heard so little about the trial, but an explanation is not a justification. In contrast, officials running the heroin experiment seem to have made their decisions by fiat, without the participation of nearby residents and businesses. Swiss and Dutch experiments have shown that those given heroin were arrested less, had a higher chance of holding down a job, and went through fewer bouts of homelessness. The trial, called the North American Opiate Medication Initiative or NAOMI, is to be conducted in Vancouver, Montreal and Toronto simultaneously with 470 subjects in total. In Vancouver, 158 users would be selected for the experiment, with 70 getting methadone and 88 getting heroin. According to the explanatory letter that went out to the community, only the selected clients will come to the clinic, visiting up to three times a day during its 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. opening hours. The experiment has already received $8.1 million from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research and all three study sites received final approval from the ethics review boards in June 2002, but it has been stalled in other regulatory approvals processes. As well, it still needs about another $2 million to cover all the costs of the pilot. Recent studies have estimated there are 60,000 to 100,000 heroin users in Canada, with 500 to 1,000 overdose deaths a year among them. More than half have acute health problems, multiple mental-health problems, and no permanent housing. Two-thirds resort to illegal activities to earn money. Although methadone was introduced to Canada in the 1960s as a substitute for heroin users trying to quit, only about a quarter of heroin users are in a methadone program at any time. Many people either refuse to enter a methadone program or try and drop out. People going through the criminal justice system will be excluded, as will people whose medical or psychiatric conditions indicate they wouldn't be good subjects for heroin treatment. Subjects will get paid for their research visits. The project has been guided by an advisory committee that includes the RCMP, Vancouver police, College of Physicians and Surgeons, College of Pharmacists, the provincial and city governments, and the health authority. Vancouver police spokeswoman Constable Sarah Bloor said police are supportive of the pilot project as part of the continuum of options for drug treatment. "It's a health initiative and we support health initiatives." "Where are the addicts now? This is 140 people who won't be injecting in the alleys." © Copyright 2003 Vancouver Sun SMiles
  15. knee turns? how about leg turns....? I do recall before being totally aware of my whole body in freefall (was more aware of upper) having problems with flat spins as one knee was down- and I was trying to control upper body to correct. An instructor got me to lay arched on top of a huge wooden wire spool- and taught me leg turns. He would turn the spool according to direction I would turn when using my legs (without dropping a knee) It helped me to learn to fly with my legs and do leg turns. SMiles

  17. Go see the doc- my left wing has been really bad for a month since I tore rotator cuff.........zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz Rotator cuff is a group of flat tendons which fuse together and surround the front, back, and top of shoulder joint. My aching is mostly located at the top and front of shoulder and the outer side of upper arm (deltoid) 1. wear a sling for first 4-5 days- rest is very important at first......& take pain killers. Nonsteroidal anti-inflamatory meds. are recommended. Doc says takes 5-6 months to heal- may give me a cortizone shot in 4 weeks if it is still agonizing. Cannot arch, delta- bring arm straight out -up past shoulder height--never alone get dressed- the hell with bras. Considering the range I do have now compared to when I first injured- cannot whine but have to have range I need to skydive again. Sleeping is the absolute shits to get comfortable. Doc says sleep on back with rolled towel under neck, knees up. 2. Stretching & strengthening exercise is o.k. start slow 3. massage therapy is needed here as all muscles from neck down -are on alert to protect injury and stiff, sore......hard as a rock. Be positive, take care- Your body will be able to fly again in time! SMiles

  19. Unless actual pill is scored down the center- ease of splitting in half yourself is negotiable as far as precise dose. Regardless, cost should not be less when buying 100mg. I live in Canada and pharmacare this year covered 100% over $2,000 cost for medicine. I also have blue cross which covers 100% over $1,000. When I was perscribed Remicade treatment (100 mg) which is infused--Cost to me upfront was $1,733.00 Total cost of one treatment is $4,300. I will need 3 treatments a year and thanking muchly our medical coverage I can almost understand the cost of this monoclonal antibody but cannot understand why the cost increased by $1,000 bucks in one year. Cannot believe how or why a prescription of anti-biotics such as Ciprol the cost is $168.62 for 30 pills 500mg. Is this liquid gold or what?? What is the ingredients that is so expensive compared to other anti-biotics?? All I was told is it is easier on the stomach than others??????? .... SMiles

Precisely why people like you Lisa, are invaluable to this great sport. At the same time- precisely why not all in this sport can "do anything they set their mind to." I can only be more appreciative than ever that- when I started jumping- the transition was from landing rounds- to landing humongous 7 cells. Transition to a 220 cruise-lite for 900 jumps before transition to 150 triathlon- and here I am totally satisfied to stay. I luv my ankles, knees, legs...etc. edited to add: with your experience in sales of gear can you estimate how many jumpers order reserves smaller than their tiny mains?? SMiles

  22. -we never got married -there still is a chance after 25 years! -we lived together, had 2 sons and put all our hearts into raising them, separated for over 7 years, got back together and our lives have been so improved and way simpler since. Change is healthy, accepting each other for what we are has been tough but most important I have found is we are 2 separate people evolving. Our most recent celebration was youngest son turning 20- can not describe how accomplished we feel!!! SMiles
  23. hormones or brain development? MRI's have developed along with testing of the brain, very interesting stuff when studying the teenagers brain. The brains anatomy during teen years is changing dynamically. The brain has reached 90% of its full size by age of 6 -but it is not developed. The individual elements of the brain continues to evolve into the age of 20. The last parts of the brain to complete this maturation process is the prefrontal cortex- responsible for Planning, Judgement and Self Control Mood swings, irrational behavior, rebelling, risk taking---parents have to set limits and boundaries but also understand that there are behaviors that teenagers can not easily control. Emotional decision making is limited at a time when parents and teachers are expecting it. The more parents understand that a biological limitation in abiliy to control and regulate emotion, the more they might be able to back off and be more understanding. Re: there is the emotional thinking brain and the thinking brain- teens are using the emotional. The belief you hold about your teen has a powerful impact on the quality of your communication with them. SMiles
