Last week got to visit the Burnaby (B.C. Canada) wildlife rescue association where they were treating a magnificent frigate bird that has a damaged wing. This is a very rare bird to this area (located in the middle of the city, Burnaby Lake Regional Park is a stunning wildlife sanctuary. The lake was created by a glacier 12,000 years ago. Birdwatching is superb--great blue herons, bald eagles, belted kingfishers and osprey. You might even spot rarer birds such as the green-backed heron...but never a magnificent frigate. Anyhow it was awesome to see the birds wingspan and also interesting to learn info on it. A huge mystery how it was found in the city here. Frigate birds fly non-stop for days searching for food. They have been tagged with altimeters and ride thermal currents high. Some birds got up as high as 2500 meters above sea level. There, the air can be 20° C cooler than the air at sea level. Frigate birds move a great distance up and down but not very far in distance from home. With their huge wingspan (7.5 feet) and low body weight (3 lbs.), Frigates birds are built for gliding — not distance. Plus, whether it's because of the low oil content of their feathers (meaning they waterlog easily) or because it is awkward to get enough lift off of the water, Frigate birds do not land on the water, so all of their captures are on the wing. It turns out that the Frigate birds are able to glide just above the surface of the water and pluck a squid, turtle or fish without a pause. They are also known to steal other bird's booty or babies and have been nicknamed the pirate bird for those behaviors! man-o'-war bird or frigate-bird is the most aerial of the water birds, It can soar motionless by the hour and has been recorded in flights lasting nearly four days, spending most of that time several hundred feet or more in the air. The name derives from its grace and swiftness in the air. Man-o'-war birds feed chiefly on fish but also prey on the young of sea birds and on jellyfish, squid, and young turtles. They have long hooked beaks and forked tails; the male has an inflatable orange throat pouch that becomes red at courtship time. some pics attached SMiles

chinese astrology based on 12 year cycle- the year of the Goat- wood element. western astrology zodiac sign- Aries/Ram So combining both I have split personality Goat/Ram? One meek, shy, creative and the other aggressive in nature.= creative, emotional, sensitive woman that loves to skydive Goats are sensitive natures, the most creative and expressive of all the Signs in the Chinese Zodiac. Very sensitive to the irrational, the paranormal; he feels things more than he sees them. Aries, the Sign of the Ram is the cardinal Fire Sign, making those born under its influence especially energetic. Typical aspects of the Aries person include an eagerness to forge ahead and take risks, perseverance in the face of adversity. SMiles

What's ur weirdest skydiving dream?
smiles replied to xavenger's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
My weirdest skydiving dream was 15 yrs ago during my static line progression. I can still recall the reality of it to this day.... In my dream I woke up in freefall flying perfectly on my belly with one young son hugged tightly under each of my arms....(only I was wearing gear.) (mothers responsibility of 2 sons while training to skydive ----getting back at me!! ) SMiles -

Wish you had treatment available in your childhood like there is now for ADHD or ADD children. A 9 yr. old that lives next door (oldest son of 3) has ADHD and his mother chose to treat him with ridalin so he could attend school. I babysat after school and found the way his mother preferred to react was different to my reaction....(behavior problems with ADHD child playing with younger brothers) I found the boy with ADHD to have many positive traits, very intelligent with loads of intuition- also creative and sensitive.... so tried focusing on his positive traits rather than negative -seemed to help some. So- now a few years later, this boy is completely off ridalin medication as he has been treated by Neurotherapy re:Dr. Paul Swingle in Vancouver B.C. Canada. http://www.drswingle.com Neurotherapy assisted the child in changing his brainwave architecture. A brain map of 5 brain locations was completed. Brainwaves are measured using an electroencephalograph (EEG). Sensors from the EEG equipment are positioned on the ears and various points on the scalp (the sensors are non-invasive and painless). After the brain map was complete, the child started playing computerized games which change his brainwave activity. The improvement to ADHD has been astounding to the childs life and his families. He also listens to tapes made by Dr. Paul Swingle that improve his ablitlity to concentrate while reading, writing essays, doing homework..... ....well this morning waiting in the doctors office I was feeling yukkk when a young mother sat next to me with a baby.............the kuus and awwes and smiles made my smile crack huge!! ....in the veg. dept. at grocery store I helped an elderly lady get her plastic bag ripped off the roll and we exchanged huge smiles ...last night I attended a class at drum cafe--- (everyone had a riot) An interactive experience where each delegate was given a large African drum and was guided by an experienced facilitator. Within minutes the whole group was transformed into a drumming ensemble creating music. You have to see it to believe it It is incredible to watch how naturally people take to drumming and music making. The effect of the drumming is a synchronization of energy, a unity and a common purpose. When you hear the rhythm of the group drumming and contribute your beat, you are listening and playing , receptive and creative at the same time. Really fun way to do something together. Everybody was smiling and in a great mood. SMiles
