Much has been said, most of it useful so I dare to jump in with a funny one: Manta, Manta - it's just a wannabe hot rod SCNR! The sky is not the limit. The ground is. The Society of Skydiving Ducks

The TI/E whom I did the Xcheck with told me to always yell "Feet up!" at an unconscious student when landing because: 1) It actually happened (to him) that doing so resulted in waking up the student 2) It will help prove you did everything (no gross negligence) to ensure a landing as carefully done as possible. "Fireman's carry" - new word learned I'd rather attend to the student on-site (would look too dramatic if I carried an unconscious student into the hangar) and give 1st aid there, but that's just my 2c. If student needs a little longer to come to some additional helpers should have approached to provide some shade etc pp. But heck, it's the actual situation that counts... The sky is not the limit. Hi folks, nope, got nothing to do with Screamers I read "A word a day" and came across this competition - the text also explains the term "wellerism" Maybe some of you folks who speak it as their first language might contribute skydiving-related wellerisms? (I sent a few ones but doubt they will meet the standard expected ) Cheers, Abedy ------------------------------------------------ WELLERISM CONTEST: Can you come up with an original wellerism? Send it in to the contest. PRIZES: Best entries will receive their choice of any of the following prizes: o One Up! http://uppityshirts.com/oneup.shtml o The T-shirt 'AWAD to the wise is sufficient' http://www.uppityshirts.com/awad.shtml o An autographed copy of any of my books http://wordsmith.org/awad/books.html HOW TO ENTER: Send your entries to contest@wordsmith.org by Friday this week. Be sure to include your location (city/state/country). Selected entries will be featured in this weekend's AWADmail. To get you primed, here are a few wellerisms from off the top of my head: "So far, so good," said the escapee as he looked at the prison in the distance. "Beauty is only skin deep," said the woman as she received a Botox injection. wellerism (WEL-uh-ri-zuhm) noun An expression involving a familiar proverb or quotation and its facetious sequel. It usually comprises three parts: statement, speaker, situation. Examples: "We'll have to rehearse that," said the undertaker as the coffin fell out of the car. "Prevention is better than cure," said the pig when it ran away from the butcher. [After Sam Weller and his father, characters known for such utterances in Charles Dickens's novel Pickwick Papers. Earliest documented use: 1839.] Today's word in Visual Thesaurus: http://visualthesaurus.com/?w1=wellerism Sam Weller http://wordsmith.org/words/images/wellerism_large.jpg Illustrator: Kyd (Joseph Clayton Clarke) (1856-1937) "A particularly telling example of a wellerism discussed by Dundes is the following: 'Shall I sit awhile?' says the parasite before becoming a permanent dweller." I have used the FreeStudio by DVDVideoSoft for several years. It provides a lot of tools and also provides tools for uploading to YouTube and downloading. You can also download music and have it converted to MP3, even whole playlists. Very sophisticated with lots of bells'n'whistles. I haven't found any problems with it, no spyware etc included. Just click "no" if you do not wish the toolbar to be installed and that is that. P.S.: If you only want to use a few tools, you can download (and install) them separately, just scroll down the page (link above) The sky is not the limit. The ground is. I voted 3500 ft which isn't absolutely correct since I usually pull at 1 grand - in meters - but 3300 ft is way closer to 3500 than to 3000 for my comfort feeling If there's lotta traffic to expect (esp. with young hot rods) or sth like that I open at 1100 m. Broken ankle on a bad landing. Need reading materials in down time.

First I wish you a speedy recovery. I know what you mean by the term "freaked wife" - mine had to visit me at hospital - and did so for four weeks, each and every single day. But for your reading/watching material: Might be a little "oldfashioned" but "Basic Canopy Flight" (by Skydive University) is pretty good, both the video and the book. Look here to get an idea (I see the DVD is now bundled with "Basic Body Flight", also quite nice for basic learning.) You will probably find this offer in the US as well. Cheers, Carsten The sky is not the limit. The ground is. The Society of Skydiving Ducks -
No Japanese tourists here. But the few lightweights who turn up, also do so on windy days and... tell ya they ain't like spinning the canopy P.S.: The Atom tandems (PdF) have ...ummm... retainers? on their front risers so make the canopy dive more in case the student is very light. (See pic attached.) I dunno if this is really an advantage, though - haven't tried the Atom tandem gear yet. The sky is not the limit. The ground is. The Society of Skydiving Ducks

Getting them "seated" in their harness is important. Also helps for a smooth (sitting) landing - they can lift their legs much better then. But some guest, well... you put it. Their bodies aren't really made for this. I usually tell them as the last work-around to stand on my feet, lift up my legs so they should be able to move the leg straps towards their knees, but sometimes even with me helping their too weak for their weight, so to say. Ever noticed those students only turn up on days with little wind? The sky is not the limit. The ground is. The Society of Skydiving Ducks

I wonder what kind of "present" she gave him next. Bungee jump? Airtistic flight? If you want to become a TI here, you need to attend at least 2x8 lessons of 1st aid, so every TI should be able to give basic 1st aid, including CPR. I take 1st aid courses every 2-3 years, so I feel somehow prepared. The sky is not the limit. The ground is. The Society of Skydiving Ducks

Hmmm, 14,000 ft makes about 50 secs so this would allow for two Al-Bundy style humps and 10 additional secs for the the cigarette after? The sky is not the limit. The ground is. The Society of Skydiving Ducks

Boxer briefs or briefs. But even with snug-fit briefs it might happen that something gets caught - even if ya pull the leg straps really tight. Ahm, you forgot "Boobies" in the list. Or - in this case - panties? The sky is not the limit. The ground is. The Society of Skydiving Ducks

Diet and weight more important than genes in fighting Dementia
Abedy replied to skymama's topic in The Bonfire
There are several approaches. The nun study for example provides some proof that the infamous plaques are more or less possibly not the first reason for developing Alzheimer's. Some scientists discuss the role of inflammatory processes and found evidence that patients who regularly take anti-inflammatory drugs such as Diclofenac are less likely to develop Alzheimer's. This is still controversial (see here, for example: http://www.healthandage.com/NSAIDs-and-Alzheimer-Disease-What-to-Do) But it would be bad if a healthy diet and exercise would be "rewarded" with a higher risk of Alzheimer's - should Mother Nature be fair this time? If yes, she's a cool bitch. The sky is not the limit. The ground is. The Society of Skydiving Ducks -

I can recommend wingstore.aero as well, bought there several items. If you want to buy a Paratec rig, according to their dealer list: http://www.paratec.de/en/dealers-parachute/ their official dealer in Spain is ParaSport: http://www.para-sport.com/ The sky is not the limit. What if there is an emergency at say 1200ft and you're the one holding everyone up from exiting? Rule here: If there are problems with the plane, land with it if this occurs 500m listen to what the captain is telling you. Tandems are to be hooked up at 500m (upper hooks) coz emergency exit window (get out and deploy reserve) is >500m to ~1200m. Roughly said, depends on exact situation. Pilots, especially those with a glider plane background will tell you that a plane has a better glide ratio if it's loaded heavier so the pilot will most likely not tell you to bail the f*** out as fast as possible. Again, roughly said, depends on exact situation. And, unbuckling won't take much more than a second, if at all The sky is not the limit. The ground is. The Society of Skydiving Ducks

Something similar, found on the net years ago. See the mpeg, I put it temporarily on my website. AFAIR I read the jumper didn't suffer any injuries apart from a bruised ego. The sky is not the limit. The ground is. The Society of Skydiving Ducks

Vanity registration plates are a little more tricky here since our system is different. But a guy here has a plate that reads G - CF 99 (The G stands for the town of Gera. Single letters are only reserved for really big cities such as Berlin - B, Munich - M, Cologne (Köln) - K or Gera, huhuhuhuhu) - BTW, the guy flies a XFire 109, hehehehe. Another guy comes from a more rural area, his reads SHK-Y 99 Since his county is smaller/less important (huhu) number plates there start with 3 letters for this very county. But at least reads like "s(h)ky" :-) My plate reads G - CK 70 - was the only one left with an only only 2-digit number. Many people think it's the year I was born. Fair Game, hah! Well, it's coz their audible beeped and all the c00l guys take off their helmets then!!!!!eleven That's another "classic" one I dislike. I am very conservative and keep my hat on, and won't unbuckle my belt before 500m (~1500 ft) A stoned packer or a drunk packer: - wouldn't have anything packed by him - would raise concerns about safety in general, especially if the DZO or the security guy wouldn't mind him doing so. Hi Lou, thanks a lot for your information and the links. I will explore it further but seems it's quite good and suitable for other usage as well, e. g. for recording/streaming videos as an external drive and that sort of thing. The sky is not the limit. The ground is. The Society of Skydiving Ducks
