Arguments for (or against) the existence of God
Zenister replied to scottbre's topic in Speakers Corner
Although I no longer follow Christianity, I would have to disagree on the tales being mere folk stories. Many of the stories and people in there have been proven to be true. It's just a history book with a mystical twist. uh... no they havent... got some evidence to back that assertion??? perhaps you should look into the definitons of 'proven' and 'true' what you have are a collection of myths loosely based in some semi-historical events... ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed. -
if you start taking any action against an accused criminal, that you would not against anyone else, you are treating them as if they have been tried and convicted. You are already judging and finding them guilty them without benifit of a fair trial. might as well start shooting everyone accused of any crime and throw away our entire legal system and its protection of an individuals rights. What is most prudent is to continue to honor and respect the fundamental principles of our legal system. If (their) reputation suffers as the result of him being later proven guilty it is only because others are now throwing those same principles away as well. Which is a FAR greater crime to our society. absolutely, unlike you apparently, i dont judge someone without evidence or conviction. There is also the matter of intent in this particular case, which in no way excuses him from guilt (if convicted) but certainly affects how he should be treated in the interm. I'm not defending him, i havent seen the evidence and will never make conclusions without it, I AM defending the fundamental principle of innocent until proven guilty. what part of innocent dont you grasp? if you treat someone accused of a crime in anyway different from someone not accused, you are taking away that status without cause. ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.

Do your homework and you'll see. Seriously.

accused. innocent until proven guilty remember? or do you think we should repeal a few of our fundamental principles just because the crime you are accused of is socially repugnant? ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.

also going to that level of obscuration could imply that you DO have a hidden agenda. Why not use easily available public means of communication if your point is to get the message out there without revealing yourself as the contributor? ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed. -
it is. Agnosticism in it purist form believes that they (the individual, it is not a structured belief system) does not have enough information do determine the true nature of God, it doesnt not make any claims about the existence of God, one way or another... to the complete agnostic (if such exists) it is always possible that the nature of God is non-existence... there are levels of agnosticism just like any other belief. ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.

ah... perhaps you should rephrase the question then you you CAN answer yes... ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.

rotflmao.. with that kind of liberal, fit the words to my desires interpretation i can find equally as many references to those in your list in the stains on the cloth underneath my refrigerator as well... blind faith is such an amazing source of humor... food? hardly, closer to grit and gristle with no substance or nourishment. Of course since anything that disagrees with your opinion(and it is nothing more) is immediately classified as 'blasphemy', there isnt any room for discussion in your limited world veiw, fortunately, for the rest of us there is more under the sun than your religion has ever dreamt of..... but i'm sure you'd be right there gleefully piling wood onto the fires of single women in previous centuries too... minds, hearts and parachutes.. all work best when they are open... the fact that you are unwilling to defend your views and opinions in a OPEN forum says much for the amount of 'truth' contained therein. ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.

there is no 'one head up' position. It is totally a matter of what works best for you in the moment, in that particular dive, that does not cause complications or difficulty later on, and allows you the most freedom to adjusts..... what your describing as 'crunched' just sounds like bad flying, but perhaps i'm not understanding/ or your not explaining yourself very well.... increasing speed is all about decreasing surface area... there are a number of ways to do that in a sit/stand, none of which are country specific.... ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.

i've already seen a few variations on the Bush/Gore stickers... "billionaires for Bush/Kerry" or "Vote Republicrat, what difference does it really make?" ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.

you cant make a really really good life altering omlet unless you've broken a few eggs on the way.. oh well i figured on cliche' deserves another... but there is never any reason to be lonely except that you chose to be...... ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed. -
Very true actually. My Mom is pretty strange. sounds like our mothers would get along fabulously. 'Strange' might not be descriptive enough. (sorry Mom! love ya!) I wish i hadnt objected as much as a brat to some of the things she 'forced' apon me...its sooooo much easier to see the benefits now... ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.

this i completely agree with! I've helped support the site in the past and will certainly continue to do so as I am financially able to, as i do with several other causes/groups i really believe in, but i'm not one that likes to 'wave' that support around. The option of being an 'anonymous' paying member is very attractive.. I have enough people worring about where my money comes and goes already ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.

but you can. it's so simple really. want to be happy? think happy thoughts, stop thinking angry ones. Want to be angry? (its useful on occasion) find that coal of rage and blow on it till it lights....... Really focus. there is the hard part, the part that requires training and discipline. the emotion will still be there, but once you stop letting it affect you the cycle breaks and so in a sense you have 'control' over it, but not control over the chemical response that caused it, you are changing one 'set of chemicals' for another by conscious choice, reason and force of will. It's your body and your mind. Do you obey it or does it obey you? make sense? ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.

absolutely. although i do not veiw it so much as a gift, it is a skill, a goal. However 'control' is perhaps to strong a word. By using the word control it seems as if you are repressing emotion and that is never a good thing IME. 'Awareness' of your emotions, 'Control' over your reactions is how i would phrase it. without that control i would have been dead long ago....everyone exercises that control to some extent or another, some people strive to refine and improve it. It is a continual journey not a destination.... and sometimes the best experiences are still to be found when emotions get the better of you... life has little meaning without strong emotion. ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.

this is what i was getting at.. at root cause everything is chemical. The mechanism it functions by is electrical, but its the chemical creates the electrical, and affects how it effects the mind/body. for this one your going to have to go farther than me.. specific emotions are triggered by specific chemical reactions at specific regions in the brain which relate to specific organs... (thats alot of specificity) but as to how/why it's exactly wired that way, Peregrinerose can probably answer much better than I or point you to a better resource than my limited knowledge... great question btw.... ps. an 'argument' is an exchange of ideas, there is no malice whatsoever involved... you wouldn’t believe how often i've tried to explain that to some people without success...some never grasp that because you are contradicting/questioning someone’s idea or concept in order to reach 'clarity' that you are personally attacking them or trying to make them feel inferior.... this is absolutely NOT the case. ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.

no - it's essentially electrical NOT chemical. what creates the electrical? ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.

you've learned to deal with, to change or hide your external, physical responses, but they are still present. By controlling your ‘feelings’ you are controlling your reaction to that emotion/chemical. Your actual emotion (the chemical response) you have very little control over, what you are controlling is how you react to that emotion. With practice ‘no reaction’ appears very similar to ‘no emotion’. It doesn’t mean you have no emotions any longer; you've trained ‘down’ your initial, instinctive response, so that your brain no longer releases the chemicals (or no longer releases them in the same amounts so they don’t affect you as strongly) that created an emotional (and resulting physical) response to that stimulus. You can also train yourself to react tointernal stimulus. i.e Thought. You can make yourself feel sad, or happy etc..By doing this you are using Reason to control/create emotion, to cause your brain to release chemicals which in turn has some measurable physical response. Of course if you’ve trained this as well it may not be noticeable, even to yourself. All forms of training are not consciously driven. This is another reason why I personally weigh reason more heavily than emotion. They are related, absolutely, but with practice you have much more conscious, deliberate control over all aspects of your life and how you react to any external stimulus. You’ll have to forgive me if I’m not explaining this very well.. there are very specific terms to delineate each aspect of emotional process, but while its something I’m very interested in (and has led me to a lot of eastern contemplative disciplines and meditative philosophy) I am by no means an expert on it…I know the pieces that have been useful to me… I once had an amazingly destructive temper… for the most part I’ve learned how to control and direct that, but once the emotion is ‘stirred’ all I can do is control how I express or react to it….. [adams voice]I’m doing much better now….[adams voice] ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.

great picture! if think she's growing up fast now, just wait till you have to invest in buckshot. Clay is joking but seriously teach her how to fall and roll while she's young and flexible... you'll save her alot of pain and you allot of heart ache later on..... I'd have been so much more broken so often as i kid if i hadn’t learned how to roll well by age 5... my mother used to have to tell me to walk through the house instead of somersault... i wish i could still do that... ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed.
