While two totally different things (guitar hero and a real guitar), playing on expert forces the player to play every note in the song. I play with some real guitarists who love the game. The think some songs are on GH because of the limited fret board

Nice pics Dave. I haven't forgotten Brian and his picture, just been busy - will send it your way ASAP :) Performance Designs Factory Team

That's a hard question to answer. It depends on rate of descent, canopy type and size, time spent in dive, etc. The best thing you can do is focus on performing the same turn (or as close as you can - safely) every time. The more variables you remove from a training scenario, the better. I like to work on 1 thing at a time - it helps me gauge success or failure of the test more reliably than trying to determine which one of the 5 things I changed had a negative or positive impact on the landing. Once you do that go out in varying conditions and take an 'educated guess'. The do your turn over that spot - don't adjust for the gates and see where your drift takes you. After you've landed make the appropriate corrections and try again. For me, in a 15mph head wind on my base leg, to hit the gates without drift I have to fly way over them so they're almost out of sight behind me. It's a weird feeling but the drift during the turn and recovery arc causes me to enter the gates with no corrections (assuming I don't muck it up). If I have a 15mph downwind I start WAY before the gates and aim to totally finish my rotation before I'm lined up with the entry allowing the drift to push me on course during the recovery. It's a very hard thing to do and requires training and trust in your judgement on your lines. It's a constant struggle not to line up the visuals in crosswinds, but if done right will really help you get a leg up on the competition. Blues, Ian Performance Designs Factory Team

100% incorrect. Initiation altitude is exactly the same regardless of wind speed. More often than not pilots rush through their turn (because they're blowing off course), or hold their turn longer than normal because their visual cues aren't the same as a no wind day. Either way is pilot error. The same turn, done in the same way, will not have a different altitude because of ground winds. Blues, Ian Performance Designs Factory Team

Landing "tricks" for a old porous canopy
ianmdrennan replied to AirCanada's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
I know Lisa knows this, but to a new reader I want to be clear: Just remember to practice anything you plan to do on landing up high to be sure that it doesn't have undesirable effects (like stalling). Blues, Ian Performance Designs Factory Team -

Constantines Devil was good, but the Devil in The Prophecy (Viggo Mortisen -sp?) was pretty damn good too. Al Pachino wins most benign Devil

You'll probably want to get a regular velocity. The new one comes with 300 HMA and an rds. I dont believe there are plans to line it with 500 hma at this stage, it's just not what it's designed to do. 300 HMA means much higher line breakage chance as well as significantly higher maintenance costs and regular relines. edit: Kolla beat me to the punch Blues, Ian Performance Designs Factory Team

No worries dude, next time I send an invite I'll send the face off mode where you can choose difficulty. It's actually pretty balanced - I had someone on easy whip me on expert because of the percentage scoring system. I think a Hard vs Expert matchup would be good - I'd even go for a Medium vs Expert. Next time ya see me online send a request - and ya, I'll go for co-op anytime. Blues, Ian Performance Designs Factory Team

Agreed. I just cannot pass Raining Blood on the last tier. There's a barrage of 4 note runs shifting one note up, then down, on the fret board. I go from a full rock meter to empty in about 3 runs. It sucks....how people pass this one is beyond me. Sucks because it's the last song standing in the way of me beating the damn game (well, the battle with Lou that is). Oh well. On a postive note, I scored 81% of the notes on Fire and Flames on expert last night. For those who haven't played fire and flames yet - here's a vid Through the fire and flames Performance Designs Factory Team

Like Dave said, you can calibrate it. Personally I'm not a fan of the calibration system. Rockband has a much more in depth way to do this and help keep audio and visual in synch. For now, use the calibration and see if it helps you. Blues, Ian Performance Designs Factory Team

Been playing it since it came out - I've had a hell of a time beating Raining Blood and One (on expert). I've completed GH1, GH2 and (almost except for that last damn song) Rock the 80's on expert. I found this much much easier until the last 2 tiers. The timing engine is more forgiving than GH1 or GH2, and they have some weird hammer ons and pull offs, but overall it's still really fun to play. That said, Rockband is going to kick the crap out of it

Army of Darkness was a very cool movie!!! Yep, I'm a huge fan of the entire Evil Dead series, but the humor is the best in Army Of Darkness. Klato, Verato, necktie. Ian Performance Designs Factory Team

Canopy Progression after a long Layoff.
ianmdrennan replied to hparrish's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
Harry, Freak of nature eh...I kinda like that Anyway, I took all my weight off, scaled back my turn to a 270 (since I had about 2000 skydives of them) and found soft, smooth ground to slide in on. Slowly added weight while staying with the most familiar turn, and then eventually went back to 450's. I slid in almost every jump this season while I worked on getting my leg strength back - a major concern to me was to re-injure myself trying to stand a landing up with the leg muscle strength so atrophyed. I've, in the last 3 weeks, only started standing up every landing again. I also worked out my legs a lot at the gym, stretched the tendons and muscles religiously, and did a lot of walking on the bottom of a pool when I was partially weight bearing. In a nutshell - stay in your comfort zone - whatever that was. Oh, and for the record, I was shitting bricks on my first few landings. It takes a while to get over the psychological barrier. So just take it at a relaxed pace. Blues, Ian Performance Designs Factory Team -

Eric (Tonto) Stephenson - Goodbye my friend
ianmdrennan replied to sangiro's topic in Blue Skies - In Memory Of
Wow. First Beezy, now Tonto. This has not been a good weekend. While I never had the pleasure of meeting Eric face to face, I spoke with him often about canopy flight. Always eager to learn, and seemingly on the right path, I'm at a loss over this. I'm going to miss our chats. Fly free my friend. Eternal swoops, Ian Performance Designs Factory Team -
Velocity 84 loaded at 2.5: 270: 1800 downwind 1200 Base 850 Start 270 450: 2200 downwind 1600 base 1150 start 450 630: 2400 downwind 1800 base 1300 start 630 Important note: These are MY altitudes - I'm suggesting anyone use these as their altitudes - turn style, loading, etc will dramatically effect these numbers. Actually, I believe he's correct. The relative wind flowing over the wing is the same. Pilots taking off at high elevations experience this - their ground speed is far higher than they're used to but the aircraft hasn't achieved the required take off airspeed (which is the same).
