OK! After speaking to the guys at the DZ who were there at the time of the accident....it was all 100% my fault. Yes I was blown a little to the right due to some turbulence but the accident was all my fault. As I came down I went to flare but somehow my brain froze and I only went half way, hands to belly button and not all the way past my belt. And as such I was not fully flared out. According to people I "bounced" up due to the half flare and then the canopy moved over my head and past me due to what I think would be called a stall.. I knot this is going to sound dumb....but I was so frustrated in seeing so many good ideas get shot down and not get any funding...i thought if i could become a manager I would work hard to make sure every engineer got their fare shake. Oh no...not just me! Any and all engineers were seen as second to buss drivers! I recall that for the first 4 or so years the engineer made less cash than the buss driver.....it was crazy! It's funny you guys and gals bring this up. While working in Finland I was single, and when I met my future wife she had a very hard choice to make. Either go out with me, the engineer or a buss driver. Guess who is a hot comodity in Finland. I'll give you a hint "The wheels on the buss go round and round......." Yeah! Your average city buss driver in Finland apparently was a hotter comodity than the average engineer. Yeah I got out as fast as I could. When I saw that I was going nowhere fast....I had no choice. So I went and applied for a managers job. Now I have to get my ass in gear and get an MBA. I believe the peak was during the Apollo missions, and when the space program fell out of public awe, so did the allure of the Engineering community(but do you guys really want this area to be part of a fad?). But there is some areas many people don't look at when they think of Engineers. for instance, the Submarine community in the US Navy. All the officers are Nuclear powerplant graduates (except supply) and by design have some sort of engineering degree. The military is full of them. In the Navy, it is preferred. I don't believe, even generally, that engineers are inept socially. But the field does not punish this ineptness like other areas. I work for the armed forces. And some of the best engineers I have ever met were guys and gals who were both engineers and active members of the armed forces. Very smart very sharp very well put together guys and gals who I love working with. They speak their minds, they know their stuff, know how to sell management on an idea and when the time comes they sure know how to relax! I've also had the great pleasure of meeting a number of the old Moon Shot engineers. Also great guys! Top of the heap super smart guys who really did enjoy what they did and they have some amazign stories.
