It takes a quite a bit of mental energy, but by standing back....engineering is a frat. They indoctrinate people to believe in what is feed them. Ever ask a student who is in a frat why they joined or if they had any disagreements? Ever see how upset they get? Rationality goes right out the window. And reading many posts I can't help but see the same level of irrationality. "It has to be hard to push out the weak...aka non believers", "The work load had to be what it is so as to make us stronger....", "I can't believe anyone would look at income when choosing an education..." And the list goes on and on and on. And it's cool, you did your time, you were indoctrinated into the field and it's now a part of who you are. And as such any criticism of the filed hits close to home. I understand that. But from the outside let me tell you how it reads; 1) Classes made difficult for no apparent reason, 2) The work load is significantly above and beyond what your friends have to deal with thus preventing you from developing as an individual and determining who or what you really are, 3) When graduating your earning potential is highly suspect when compared to the amount of time and effort put into the field. 4) If you are a female engineer, write your own check....if you are a guy...ha ha ha really? I'm sorry did you think equal opportunity applied to guys? I'm not disrespecting the field, it is a very valid and important field to be in but.....an intelligent person can look at the field before entry, calculate the ROI and walk away. And in an age where if we don't innovate we die....perhaps we are pushing away our innovators? But why aregue? Things will never change. Such is life. And if students born and raised in the US are not interested....then I'm sure immigrants like myself will stand up and take the job? It's like watching old people fuck..... I think that applies to me learning how to pack. If here eyebrows are not connected and she's not wearing sweat pants.....she's hot. Engineering school, engineering office and I hear at some dz's Life through good thoughts, good words, and good deeds is necessary to ensure happiness and to keep chaos at bay. Engineering is a cult / frat with a very bad sales pitch for your average guy. Even worse if you are at all social. Thus why some are very offended by any criticism of the field. For me...and this is just me and my experience. Engineering school was hazing. Physical and psychological hazing. I loved the subject I love solving mechanical problems but I with a passion hated the instructors. I as an immigration did not appreciate that my professors or their assistants did not have a command of the language. And the work load of 4 hours of after class work per class per day.....why? That aside here is who engineering is a good option Immigrants who would be ok with a lower middle class but stable life. Girls. All jokes aside given current federal requirements and for public perception a girl will do very well once she graduates. On average a female engineer will move faster up the ladder than a male engineer. As an hr rep from ge once said..if she has not killed some one or posed nude a female engineer will be given preference to an equally skilled male engineer. Thus why I'm not surprised when some one says their girl just graduated from an engineering school with 4 job offers. Basic economics. So. If possible stand back....other than the love of solving problems...is it worth it. Yes it's stable yes unemployment is lower than average but given the hazing that engineering school is and the limited compensation packages is it worth it? For me at the moment with 8 years in the field.....maybe not Life through good thoughts, good words, and good deeds is necessary to ensure happiness and to keep chaos at bay. Hell of a sales pitch. So hard hazing, lowish pay and next to no respect..... I can see this argument for the arts but engineering.....? Thank you a very well written article. I can empathize with the girl. I too due to being an immigrant had to just do it and also felt very unhappy with how the instructors just hazed students. But what choice did I have? As my mother would tell me just put your head down and push and graduate with a bs in engineering and then you can have a job....and I did. 5 years of slow burn and I was out. Looking for a gig in the worst economy for engineers since the death of the moon shot program. But I landed a gig. I agree %100 with the article. But further more....is it really worth it if you have a choice? I have a bs in engineering, six sigma black belt, two patents and a few other things and will soon have an MBA and I'm sure I will have a hard time leveraging my engineering experience into increased compensation. My friend with a non technical education not only is in a better spot but in this economy looks to do better. Sadly as it stands today....there is better pay in financial engineering than actual engineering. Employer's attitudes to skydivers

Some of these stories are a bit disconserting at the moment either people don't care or are very interested in what I am doing with my limited free time. And in the next few months I will be looking around to see if other pastures are better or not and I may have to hide how much enjoyment this sport provides Life through good thoughts, good words, and good deeds is necessary to ensure happiness and to keep chaos at bay. Ha ha we sure love our boobies. The reason behind this post is rather straight forward. I am an ace at enrolling others in concepts, thoughts or systems however I am the harshest critic of myself and as such not apt at "selling" myself or my capabilities. Thus the idea of actually going out and networking and selling myself and my capabilities feels rather alien to me. Further complicating matters I work in a rather small, closed and insestious industry thus making new connections and increased visibility of the world a bit difficult thus the though of talking to people where I am most comfortable. Yet i do to my green status in the sport I did not wish to tred on sacred space. Life through good thoughts, good words, and good deeds is necessary to ensure happiness and to keep chaos at bay. I concur networking should not be a means to an end rather a means in it self such that one should not be "hunting" rather one should be just who they are and make personal connections which may or may not end up in a move. Seeing how the past week was non stop rain and the various types of holds I see at my home DZ I was just not sure if it was an accepted practice. I try and live a very segregated life such that fun is fun, school is school, work is work and love life is love life. And as I'm getting older and a bit wiser I would like to leverage the various portions of my life for a better stronger network. Thank you for the responses and the previous experiences.

Networking at the DZ? Some of us are in the professional word and as such at a given level moving around and or exploring new employment options goes far beyond monster or emailing resumes and shifts to face to face contact and word of mouth. And rightfully so due to the level of compensation and risks associated with hiring the incorrect person for the job. Thus my question is this, is it rude or is it acceptable to network at a DZ? If it is rude...understandable considering who wants to work on their day off. If acceptable, wow that would be very nice. Think a full division of skydives....blue skies..low winds....boys and girls we are going to the DZ
-
Wendy Ah crud you are right.....OK I'll be nice. Still not going to date a + sized girl......but the next time I'm stuck next to one on a long haul flight....I'll be more understanding. Long story short and I'll end it at this, If one is of a given BMI which makes their entry and exit from an aircraft a danger and or they are such dimensions such that they will encroach on others personal space they need to understand that they do not qualify for "special" assistance. It is a hindrance of their own doing and as such they should take full responsibility. It happens. This is what I love and dislike about this forum. There is some great info but there is a good ammount of golden showers. But it's all good -
Air drop porn and beer and built a Mc Donalds and a Pizza hut...stand back and enjoy the show! Look deep down the peopel of Iraq are no different than you and I. They just want to live in peace. It's that there are these small number of assholes who think that everyone should live in the "good old days" which keep fucking shit up. Cool what ever, just don't take part of someones seat or demand that the airline install super sized seats and charge the same price. KINKY! But as long as on a long flight she doesn't take up more than 1/4th of my seat I'm ok with it. It has nothing to do with her size, she's not my type so what...it has to do with her size and taking up space in my seat! And her having the balls to demand that she be treated in a "speical" manner. Come on! Really! You ate too much and now I have to treat you as if you are "special" http://noobstore.com/prodimages/tshirt-m-gtfo-Green-art-280.gif Life through good thoughts, good words, and good deeds is necessary to ensure happiness and to keep chaos at bay. Ok all golden showers aside. It's not a bad class. Yes perhaps it may be more beneficial for the new to the sport than the veteran. But that being said, is more education a bad thing? Look if you are tall there is the exit row. Ok that's not your fault. The same with folks who due to age or disability need wheel chair to get on or off or just need more space. I'm 100% cool with that. But when you are 200lbs+! What...I'm going to feel sorry? Life through good thoughts, good words, and good deeds is necessary to ensure happiness and to keep chaos at bay. No worries brother, more larger women for you right? And if you pay full price and hav to give up 2/3rds of your seat to her you will be A-OK with it? GRAT! I know who I'm going to be switching seats with on my next flight. Shah "Virgin, brother! Look here is great seat for you! She's taking a full 2/3rds of it!" Mom had two rules when it came to her sons dating. 1) NO FAT CHICKS IN THE HOUSE! 2) NO MOMS! She enforced it with hitting us in the back of the head with a spoon. OR...and all three of us did it....bring a + sized girl over to dinner and get the shit handed to you by the family. And I've flown plenty of times next to a + sized dude or a chick. And all I could think of was...REALLY! FLYING SUCKS ALREADY DO I NEED THIS! Get your damned seat and stop stealing my freaking air! Like I said I will gladly give up my seat for some one who is in need of one due to medical conditions or parents who want to fly with little ones. Hell I'll fly the next day. It's the right thing to do. But this...this is just....WTF! Life through good thoughts, good words, and good deeds is necessary to ensure happiness and to keep chaos at bay.
