In all honesty seems like about every other year that I've been in the sport. ---------------------------------------------- You're not as good as you think you are. Seriously.

Tandem Instructor Requirements (by request)

Do you understand the moment there is a actionable incident after the requirement for a 3rd class is revoked the lawyers are going to be so far up the ass of whichever organization abolishes the requirement that they will need flashlights and caving gear? ---------------------------------------------- You're not as good as you think you are. So far you've come up with a bunch of non comparative comparisons, but I have not seen a solid reason to remove a requirement that has been in place since the inventors of Tandem skydiving put it there more than 20 years ago. How is having the medical requirement in place hurting tandem skydiving? ---------------------------------------------- You're not as good as you think you are. Seriously. -

Tandem Instructor Requirements (by request)

It's a moot point as the two situations are not congruent. A Sport Pilot CFI, or Commercial Balloon pilot had to train over weeks and weeks, invest many tens to hundreds of hours of study, pass a written knowledge test, an oral knowledge test, and a practical skills test all administered by a(n) individual(s) who had no fiduciary interest in whether the applicant passed or failed. A Tandem Instructor Candidate has to show up for a weekend, take an open book written test, brief someone (barely) on a Cat D skydive, and do a handful of jumps with someone who has to make a living by passing people. ---------------------------------------------- You're not as good as you think you are. Yep. That needs to be tightened up too. Worst thing we did was to take it out of the USPA HQ and make it a business. ---------------------------------------------- You're not as good as you think you are. Seriously. -
AAD requirement @ Skydive San Marcos

Most DZ's I've seen with an AAD requirement have a 1000 jump exception. ---------------------------------------------- You're not as good as you think you are. Seriously. -

I agree except for point 5. The problem is drug use and a penalty for it. ---------------------------------------------- You're not as good as you think you are. Seriously. -

They are not working. We have the lowest possible tallent, competency, and experience level in skydiving since I started, and it's due to sub standard instruction across the board. ---------------------------------------------- You're not as good as you think you are. Seriously. -

I'm on the seasoning side of things though with as fast as people add up jumps these days the jump numbers might be revisited? ---------------------------------------------- You're not as good as you think you are. Seriously. -

I've hashed the argument out more than once, and in attendance with the full USPA BOD, by request, feel free to discuss, perhaps it will lead to change. Diablo - Please repost this in Safety and Training. I think it would be a very good discussion there. (not inappropriate as a one off statement here, but the full discussion should happen and that's a better place for it...) ^this. And requiring AAD's is not the answer to this, but rather tort reform is. ---------------------------------------------- You're not as good as you think you are. Seriously. -

Are some people Just not meant to Skydive?
diablopilot replied to dmcculloch's topic in Safety and Training
In answer to the question titling this this thread, yes I have met some people who just shouldn't skydive. Judging by the two videos you've posted, you are not even close to that. Relax your arms a bit, push with your legs a bit, and breath. Everything else will fall into place. ---------------------------------------------- You're not as good as you think you are. URGENT....Apache owners, discontinue use of new handles

So if the direction of pull is the problem, riddle me why an RSL can pull the pin at 90 degrees to the cable at less then the weight of a fully packed rig? ---------------------------------------------- You're not as good as you think you are. Seriously. -
AAD requirement @ Skydive San Marcos

No, making blanke assumptions is the stupidest thing a jumper can do. Not reading the manual and understanding the operation of a potentially lifesaving/deadly device on your back is the stupidest thing a jumper can do. Asking people to spoon feed you information you should be able to figure out for yourself is the stupidest thing you can do. Assuming I'm a jackass, well that's just ignorance. Suffice to say there are times where an AAD can be liability of greater risk than it's potential to save you. On a personal note, at a 112 jumps you can barely wipe your own ass in this sport. Try not to question the experience an wisdom of someone who's been around the block if you value survival. If you don't, hey, ignore and do what you like. ---------------------------------------------- You're not as good as you think you are. Seriously. -
Somewhere around here is a whole discussion about WHY line twists happen on reserve deployments including those deployed by an RSL. In the case of RSL deployments the twists are most often caused by the jumper's attempt to get belly to earth rather than place the body in the optimum position for a clean deployment in relation to the relative wind. The moment after a break away the optimum position is NOT belly to earth, but rather feet into the relative wind. ---------------------------------------------- You're not as good as you think you are. Near you I can highly recommend Skydive City in Zephyrhills from personal experience, and Skydive Miami Homestead via word of mouth. If you want to do a concentrated course with accommodations included come see me! http://www.skydivespaceland.com/learn-to-skydive/a-license-in-a-week/ ---------------------------------------------- You're not as good as you think you are. Mr. Bishop, the problem with the sensationalistic arguments based on rumors and second hand tellings about the cons of RSL's is that the simply are not backed up by statistics. In 30 years I can count on one hand the number of fatalities influenced by the use of a conventional single riser RSL. The number of breakaway to no/low pull fatalities for the same period can be totaled over 50, perhaps 100. First you must discount the dual sided Racer type RSL, as that design is flawed. It is more prone to fatal mis-rigging and can cause additional problems in dual deployments. Second the wing loading/line twist on the reserve argument is weak at best since we havent seen droves of people spinning in under malfunctioned reserves. The reserve canopy TSO has standards of survivable decent rates WITH line twists. The simple fact is RSL's saves lives, without adding any significant amount of risk. I speak from practical experience as I have 34 breakaways from malfunctions and well over half are on RSL equipped rigs. ---------------------------------------------- You're not as good as you think you are. diablopilot replied to bluskidave's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
do you have to have it on for every skydive? Why would you not turn it on? If you read the manual and understand the parameters of operation, you may discover that answer for yourself. ---------------------------------------------- You're not as good as you think you are. Seriously.
