More Proof GWing Alarmists are Running Out of Time
narcimund replied to rushmc's topic in Speakers Corner
According to rushmc you can tell which side is lying by "following the money". And of course we know that tree-hugging hippies have far more money than the oil conglomerates. First Class Citizen Twice Over -

Ah. You browse a blog. Given that, I now see that you're definitely qualified to announce that "the scientists" will eventually refine their investigative methods until they come to agree with you. Got it. First Class Citizen Twice Over -

If I read this right, you're saying you have more reliable information than "the scientists" and they'll eventually come to understand what you already know. Can you explain how you came by your conclusion? First Class Citizen Twice Over -

Your sequential IFs are all getting executed. If you want it to stop checking after finding its first TRUE condition, change the succeeding IFs to ELSIFs. while () { if ($_ =~ /-ssr/) { while () { chomp; if ($_ =~ /\sPort\sDown/) { $state = "Down"; $body = $_; &send_email_SsrNoc(); } elsif ($_ =~ /\sexecuted/) { $state = "LoginActivity"; $body = $_; &send_email_LoginActivity(); } elsif ($_ =~ /\TEMPTOOHIGH/) { $state = "TempHighAlert"; $body = $_; &send_email_TempAlert(); } elsif ($_ =~ /\sPort\sUp/) { $state = "Up"; $body = $_; &send_email_SsrNoc(); } elsif ($_ =~ /\PPP/) { $state = "PPP"; $body = $_; &send_email_PppAlert(); } } } } First Class Citizen Twice Over -

Teachers stage fake gunman attack on sixth graders

Here's an simpler way to put the same thing: People really close to the blast will die whether they D&C or not. People far away will survive whether they D&C or not. But in between there is a zone where that extra bit of protection might be important. Lay people are probably in no position to have an opinion about whether that zone is large or small. Many States Trying to enact Law to Skirt the Electoral College
narcimund replied to lawrocket's topic in Speakers Corner
Do you mean you don't believe it's true? Or do you mean that you think it's a bad choice that should be changed? Oh. Are you one of those people who believe that? How cute. First Class Citizen Twice Over -

Many States Trying to enact Law to Skirt the Electoral College
narcimund replied to lawrocket's topic in Speakers Corner
You don't understand the terminology. The PEOPLE do control the presidency. "The PEOPLE" refers to the several state governments. Maybe you don't mean "The PEOPLE" but instead you think "people" should control the presidency. As in individuals. That's not how it works. If you'd like it to work that way, change the constitution. (Of course in actuality neither individuals nor the state governments control the presidency. The corruption has obsoleted both of those concepts. Ah well...) First Class Citizen Twice Over -

When each voter is equal, you can imagine the campaigning will be where the candidate can get to the most voters possible. Wyoming and North Dakota will be right out. Don't expect to see any in New Hampshire either. Maine? Who's ever heard of Maine? First Class Citizen Twice Over -

I find these answers very interesting. You might have a strong understanding of your own reactions, or perhaps you just have an ideal that you'd like to believe you'd live up to. Either way, I wouldn't categorize these behaviors as "human" the way you did. They're interesting and you could argue they're superior to the opposite answers in some way, but they're not at their core "human" values. First Class Citizen Twice Over

It's very human to be happy when harmful situations end or dangerous men die. It's idealistic in a way (but hardly human) to revere individual people who cause massive destruction. Without intending to make a comparison with any current world leaders, but rather to test the extent of your conviction, do you believe you would A) stop an assassination attempt against hitler? B) catch a man who had just shot your wife but was knocked down a cliff by the recoil of his gun? C) donate blood to save a someone who swore his next act would be to blow up a city? First Class Citizen Twice Over

The only time you have NO choice is when a gun is pointed at you. You have many choices in this issue however. You've confused already committing to a choice with not having one in the first place. First Class Citizen Twice Over

So you're saying that your persistant (or should I say obsessive?) badgering of jakee is solely for the purpose of dispassionately helping him improve his debating skills? That's very generous of you. First Class Citizen Twice Over

Nobody with enough brain power to spell as well as you actually could believe that the truth of his statement implies that it "shouldn't be too hard" to find original documents. I also don't think you actually believe the position you're arguing. I don't think ANYONE believes the designation "enemy combatant" was invented for any reason than as a clumsy slight-of-hand to avoid the rule of law. First Class Citizen Twice Over

Now it's willard's turn. I'm taking bets on how he replies: A) This isn't proof. It misses on a minor technicality of language. B) This isn't proof. Your sources are tainted. C) This isn't proof. You showed that ECs aren't covered by the Convention but you didn't PROVE that was the original intent of the government. D) I wasn't asking you. I was asking Jakee. E) ... silence... Many States Trying to enact Law to Skirt the Electoral College
narcimund replied to lawrocket's topic in Speakers Corner
Actually, drinking age and dui limits are controlled by the feds. The laws are nominally state laws, but the feds blackmail the states (with their own money) to make their laws fit federal guidelines. The areas of law which remain in state control are rapidly diminishing and I suspect hardly any are actually protected by principle any more. Maybe lawrocket can think of some examples but I can't. Many States Trying to enact Law to Skirt the Electoral College
narcimund replied to lawrocket's topic in Speakers Corner
A couple of hundred years ago it was decided that the US would be a tight-knit assembly of generally independent governments. Those governments chose the president. Those governments first asked the citizens for their opinion in the matter, but the citizens had no more than an advisory role. Now the word "state" is coming to mean simply a geographical subdivision within the US borders. All independence is being stripped away. The US is almost completely a unified nation. If that's to be the way it is, then the electoral college is obsolete and the electoral college should be abolished or state governments should finally put themselves out their own misery and just structurally assign their electoral votes by the national referrendum. It seems like it's time to re-decide this issue with a constitutional convention: are the states to be independent governments or is that idea dead? The wasted effort of continually fighting about it over and over and over is a real drag. Edited to add: I'm getting real tired of writing essentially the comments as billvon and having him hit the "Post Reply" button seconds before I do. First Class Citizen Twice Over -
