  1. Nope, not on most sport rigs, but some riggers out there may put a pass of seal thread (~4.75lb break) thru the toggle and riser. It's pretty common on bailout rigs and older rigs though. 2. well, the chute itself is about 12 years w/ about 400 jumps or so. Yup, that sounds like it rusted the ring attaching the canopy to the bridle, rust cut thru the attachment. Shouldn't cost much to fix, takes longer to set it up than it does to sew a new one on. Good luck! 3. Really, WOW, I have been wearing them for nearly 9 years, they work fantastic for me. I cant not jump without my glasses, and early on I got caught on a "last light" load it became darker than i was comfortable with (wearing sunnies). I have been wearing transitions ever since and they work great. The pair I had were very temperature sensitive. I got them in Iraq, even early in the morning (say low 90's) they wouldn't fully transition unless I had them inside but with the window open so they got UV on them. I talked to the MFG and they even said they're much the opposite in extreme cold, they would almost black out because they got so dark. Also, how long does it take to transition? Do they clear up in the plane and darken on exit? 8. We had one shortly after take off nail the wing of the PAC right at the stall switch. No more stall alarms to bother us! "I may be a dirty pirate hooker...but I'm not about to go stand on the corner." iluvtofly DPH -7, TDS 578, Muff 5153, SCR 14890 I'm an asshole, and I approve this message
  9. Hmm.... Given that the canopy would not fly straight without significant compensation with the brake on the opposite side, he may have assessed that attempting a landing on rears would be too dangerous. There is a huge difference between landing on rears with normally functioning brakes, or a broken brake line (canopy flying straight), and attempting to land on rears with a canopy that won't fly straight without heavy input. +1 But it sounds like the OP knows more about canopy flight than anyone else here. 10. He caused the knot himself, the excess wrapped around the toggle and knotted up, not the first time that's happened. Furthermore, at that point it may well have become a necessary cutaway... I for one have no intentions of criticizing someones decision to go to their reserve. (other than just bullshitting with them/joking) He caused the mal, sure... he blamed it on the packer (which is no excuse, you really should set/stow your excess and cock your PC before you plop it down and walk away) but maybe he didn't realize what he did caused it and not the packer. Yes, people exist out there with thousands and thousands of jumps that cannot properly hook up a canopy to the risers/dbag/pc. The great part is it keeps riggers like me with some income (either by fixing their screw up or by repacking their reserves!) 11. I would say "no". But the loose fit to your back means the container is going to wiggle around a bit behind you, which can make precision flying a little more difficult, because of the constantly shifting weight. I always find it a little distracting to fly up behind someone in a formation and to watch a rig dancing around on someone's back. And it could shift enough to make it pretty hard to find your hackey. 12. I saw the photos posted on a Facebook page, and started asking questions. I don't recall who had them posted, but he was an old-time skydiver. Here is all the description I have: "The airplane on it's back is a DHC-6, Twin Otter. The Twin Otter was being taxiid from the maintenance hanger to the terminal in a thunderstrom when a tail wind flipped it over. Being taxiied by a mechanic, not a pilot. 50 knot tailwind, went over a hump in the taxiway, when tail came up, over she went... Control lock was installed, wrong choice. Jimmy Hefferman said it happened in Lawton, OK."And of course, as you probably know, Metro Airlines was the source of the Otter that Dave Boatman started using at old Spaceland for skydiving, the first in the country to use that plane, now so popular everywhere. Control lock was installed while taxi-ing? 19. Fucking Mods! Oh wait, that was me who did that. FYI, you all can delete your own posts too if you do it within 6 hours (I think that's the time span). But if we do it to a thread we start, doesn't it just say 'post deleted by' and still remain as a thread? 21. I find it odd that they would tell him that it was for aesthetic reasons though. The change makes sense to us, but why tell him something different? 22. I'm pretty sure the reason for the change is to make the containers safer by using the tension of the main in the pack tray as pressure for the closing loop. If you feel you want to go back to the way it was, just have someone change it. I kinda like the old way better, but my V3 doesn't have the new one, so I haven't worked with it much. It does give you a more secure main closing though IMO.
