After an EXTREMELY bumpy take off in a PAC where I was sitting on the floor against the back bulkhead on my knees (and seatbelted in) my container felt funny... I asked another jumper for a pin check. I was the only one on the floor, so I didn't open the door till I was happy with my pin check. So I rotated so she can check me, and: "You're out!!!" "What do you mean?" "YOUR MAIN IS OUT!!!!!!!!" Yes, the bumpy take off moving me around the door track knocked my pin out and the main was now sitting in the bag on my feet, with my container wide open. This was in a Vector3-M, properly filled with canopies that the container was sized for, bridle all tucked in and hidden, main pin flap closed, proper length (maybe even a little shorter) main closing loop. Took the rig off, re-closed it, put it back on and did another check of 3's. Uneventful skydive and opening. Lesson learned: Check your shit before the door opens, and don't hesitate to keep it closed till you're satisfied, pin checks save lives. A few minutes of cool air is worth not killing a dozen or two of your friends. I reach back and feel my pin, then handle check before I open the door. Safire2 is better opening but feels a little less 'sporty' in the air to me. (Sabre2 170 vs Safire2 169) Both have great flare, I went with the Safire for the openings. It's not an issue of NEEDING booties, they just make the job easier and more efficent. I don't NEED booties to do RW, and have done plenty of RW in a freefly suit. RW suits just make it less work and more able to control your movements with your legs so your hands are free for grips. I can probably out track you in a freefly suit, with you wearing an RW suit too, so don't say that it's all about the suit, its more about the person in it. If you want to work harder using the wrong tool, knock yourself out. But what do I know, I only have a few dozen (6-20 people ways) and only once went low enough to not make it back up. It is a LOT easier to do it in an RW suit. Get the right tool for the job. If you want to do RW, get an RW suit... those aren't great for freeflying in, so once you get that bug, get a freefly suit. It's far better to have the suit designed for what you want to do, than it is to have one suit that kinda does both, or does one well and kinda sucks at the other one.
