  1. No need to apologise. We need an update version anyway. I think I've posted on the previous threads before, and each time my occupation was different. And same again! I'm now an office assistant at a timber place. My assistant is a dog, and I spend most of the day feeding him lollies from the lollie jar. dream job alert! "Skydiving is a door" Happythoughts

  3. dang good old gut instinct eh? I would have liked to have seen his reaction - that reminds me of the scene with Sean Connery and Kevin Costner in the Untouchables "he brings a knife you bring a gun, he sends one of yours to the hosptial, you send one of his to the morgue" Dang i need to see that movie again. 4. Call it a gut feeling. That same gut feeling has saved my ass before (an attempted armed robbery at a drive up ATM about a year ago). The front door was still locked, but since we have large windows in the back of the house and a sliding glass door on the side of the house, I knew that didn't mean anything. So, since I had that gut feeling, I sure as fuck did do that. Turned out ok, but I'd rather take the time to do that and have nothing, then ignore my gut feeling and walk in on someone who could be armed. Well, there was something amiss, my roommate's large fish (an Oscar) was laying in the middle of the hallway. He had jumped out of his tank and flopped that far. ever thought about going into the aquarium business? You seem to be at one with the fishes. Seriously, ok i get it - what happened at the ATM just out of curiousity? "Skydiving is a door" Happythoughts
  5. First of all, there are other modern countries with higher murder rates than the U.S., such as Russia, Brazil and Northern Ireland. just as your original statement is a sweeping one, and very subjective, so is this. How on earth can you compare a modern industrialised 1st world nation like the US with Brazil (largely 3rd world, with a huge poverty/drugs problem, more profilic and extreme than even the US); Russia, which since the fall of communism has experienced huge surges in violent crime and murder rates because of the transitional state and power vacuum it has found itself in, and Northern Ireland, where the TOTAL murder figures (for 2002-3) which included all gun related as well as others was 42!! 6. It was actually John Major, the predecessor to Blair, who initiated this law after Dunblane. Edited for typo "Skydiving is a door" Happythoughts
  7. When I got back to college station from Xmas w/ the parents, something didn't feel right when I drove up to my house, so I roomcleared each room of the house in the correct order/fasion with my firearm and my mid-sized maglight. Does that count as a fire drill? did you really do that? Why? "Skydiving is a door" Happythoughts
  8. i heard one time that cops in the US would prefer home owners not to have guns, saying that most don't know how to use them properly, shoot through walls, shoot their own family members by mistake, shoot cops by mistake and generally make more dangerous situations for themselves by owning them. Is there any truth to that? I would imagine the last thing a cop showing up at a burglary call wants to have to worry about is whether to homeowner is inside holed up with a piece wondering if the burglar is still inside. 9. nah that was great thanks very much for the detailed reply. It is somewhat confusing because this is all a hobby and not my day job, and it being my first "proper" project that needs to be exported out on to something other than just back onto a mini DV and then video, it's useful to have such a detailed response. Thanks again! "Skydiving is a door" Happythoughts

  11. do you or anyone have video of this that could be uploaded? It sounds amusing. On a side note, im not a TM, but was on a load with 2 or so tandems back in November. Im in the middle of the Let and just as they are giving the red light and the door is slowly being eased open, one of the tandem passengers who is sat in front of his TM, right up at the nose end of the plane on the seat, and about to be hooked up, decides that door opening = time to jump, so he gets up and proceeds to step over and through peoples legs as he makes his way down the cabin and gets about halfway down the plane before everyone starts realising what is going on, laughing and holding him back. Poor guy had no clue as to why we were laughing so hard. TM was just looking at him incredulously, i don't think he could actually believe what the guy was doing. "Skydiving is a door" Happythoughts
  12. thanks Murrays - is the Sorensen codec an option while exporting the file as a QT file? "Skydiving is a door" Happythoughts
  13. thats a cool idea. I dont even wear a camera at the moment, but i'll bear that in mind when i start shooting for others. You could always do a "Fight Club" and black the tape to a porn pic or something and give them the odd 1 frame of some of the other kind of "tandem" video "Skydiving is a door" Happythoughts
  14. yup i forgot to add this to my post - good point. Always "black" your tapes before hand like jm said (just hit record and tape the entire cassette with the lens cap on) "Skydiving is a door" Happythoughts
  15. i would also add that they way you capture footage can lead to dropped frames. If you capture from one start-stop sequence to another, and have left space on the tape, then capturing over this "gap" can lead to dropped frames. Best thing to do is try to work out what instance is causing the dropped frames and work from there - easier said than done i know, but that's the best advice i can give really
  16. hi - i have a finished project, its only a short 11min video. I want to burn it onto CD or DVD (im thinking CD would be best) for the guy who did all the camera work in the video - i havent done this before though. He wants it as a promo to be able to send to dz's to show off his camera work etc, and i was thinking, can i just export it from FCP as a Quicktime movie and burn it like that? That way everyone who has a laptop/PC just needs quicktime and they will be able to see it right? Any suggestions on this would be really appreciated - thanks. "Skydiving is a door" Happythoughts

  22. i know this was a ways back in Sept, but i just got around to reading about it now. I was wondering what the "politics" and reasons were that was quoted in the article i read about it in Skydive Mag, that dictated that the USPA did not allow him to compete? Is it something to do with his "unofficial" record? If so, that's not really a valid enough reason to not allow him to enter a valid competition is it? I don't know much about swooping, but i find it bizarre he was not allowed to enter. Perhaps someone could enlighten me as to why? Thanks "Skydiving is a door" Happythoughts
  23. My friend once told me that if you are scuba diving and you run out of air, you should put your gear into the closet until you figure out why you you messed up. If your AAD fires, you have run out of air also. You just can't go back up and get more. I have done stupid crap due to complacency. I put my rig in the closet until I figured out why. I also put personal checklists into place to prevent myself from repeating. Also, I try to prevent others from doing avoidable stuff. can you elaborate on some of the things you did to make you think and keep yourself in check please? I want to know if i have everything you have thought about covered if possible. Cheers "Skydiving is a door" Happythoughts
  24. So many people miss this point in life. There was an interview made with over 1,000 old people living in rest homes. They were asked if they had their life to live over again, what would they do differently. Consistently the same 3 answers kept coming back. They would: 1) Risk more 2) Dream more and 3) Reflect. You could risk more without being a dreamer, but that is just being hard up for thrills. You could dream without risking, but then you are dead. And if you don't risk or dream....you have -nothing- to reflect about! So, the 3 really -do- go together. Dream, Risk, Reflect. ltdiver nice post thanks! "Skydiving is a door" Happythoughts
  25. The question was "Say I see someone doing something very dangerous." This indicates and act, rather than an ommision. Yes. By all means, if you see something you know to be wrong point that out. I mentioned specifics. Please don't hold me to what I never said. t thanks - yeah i figured it was more to do with doing something dangerous rather than newbies commenting in general on stuff.
