Yes and no. Near Spaceland? You'll have to drive a good ways back into Houston. Near Waller (SD Houston)? You'll have to drive a good ways back into Houston. In Aggieland? This is home of Texas A&M University, the Aggies. With 45,000 hard-core Aggies going to school here, there's plenty of Texas to experience. The largest private gun collection on display at the Corps of Cadets Center on campus, never mind some really good country bars (The Dixie Chicken), really good steaks/bar-b-Q and a pretty good strip bar. If you want to do what SpinDoctor did, we could even go The Texas Hall of Fame, which is a C/W dance hall. Its not like the ones in/around downtown Houston, which are full of pretty boy cowboys that probably never even been near a cow, much less grew up in the country. Actually, I like how SpinDoctor put it "fuck me the women here are georgous!" dang that all sounds great - a big gun collection, barn dancing and bbq sound like the perfect combination for a different kind of night (apart from that bbq, which i tend to eat as much of as i can). I am meeting my friend, a packer girl (not sure which dz she works at) and she is going to be my Southern Belle TM guide while i'm there, but i'm going to mention to her we should stop by at your dz. Is it true you do rodeo jumps with real live steeds there? I highly doubt it and figure this is more myth than anything, but i did hear it was in the SIM this year... im in the UK - what do i need to have to jump in the US?
Newbie replied to Newbie's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
i take it nothing - other than the usual i mean - i.e. repack papers, logbook, BPA membership etc etc. Do i have to join USPA? If so, can i just do that at the DZ? I'll only be there a week would like to be prepared now so i don't have any surprises. Cheers! "Skydiving is a door" Happythoughts -
Only if you're doing RW, most of the FFers are much more progressive and wear nice felt Stetsons. LOL! Can you recommend me any non skydiving related fun in the Houston area? I know it's a huge city etc, but if you know of any good Texan style restauarants or anything nearby (i'll have transport) please do let me know - i want to be enveloped by the Southern Experience for the entire week if poss. Cheers! "Skydiving is a door" Happythoughts

thanks Dave - im actually meant to be seeing my skydiving friend Carene who works as a packer somewhere in Texas, somewhere near Houston i think. Anyways i'll be sure to mention Aggie land to her when we start planning stuff! PS is it true we have to wear a 10 gallon hat when jumping in Texas? Someone said it was part of the BSR's in that part of the country. "Skydiving is a door" Happythoughts

Hi I'm coming over to Houston for a week in April and was wondering where is good to jump out in that neck of the woods. I'll be there from April 17-25th so let me know if anything is going on down there guys! Thanks "Skydiving is a door" Happythoughts

thanks everyone. Brian can you explain this to me - how can putting the canopy into deep brakes = minimum sink? I would have thought deep brakes would have given you a max sink, no? Thanks for clarifying. "Skydiving is a door" Happythoughts

where/when can i jump a helicopter/balloon in the UK?
Newbie replied to Newbie's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
when and where does this happen? Anyone know of anything coming up? I want to jump without relative wind to see how it is (plus the ride up would be cool too no doubt!) -

in a post in incidents, some people are saying use front risers to try to make it back? I always ball up and slightly tug down on rears to change the glide angle - should i only do this if im upwind of the landing area? Are front risers better used if downwind? PS i know it's best to land out if i won't make it back and know about the "stationary spot" to check to see where i will be able to make it to. "Skydiving is a door" Happythoughts

i always look for "out's" on an aerial map and/or get an instructor to show me if im at a new dz. It's best to know where they are before boarding, so come 1000/1500ft you don't have to find one - you just work on your approach to getting there. "Skydiving is a door" Happythoughts

just curious - why 4? "Skydiving is a door" Happythoughts

you know where the door is, feel free to use it anytime you see fit. Not saying the UK as a whole, your citizens have actually shown more concern for world issues and whether or not their leaders are lying about them than Americans ever would. Tony Blair however, come on, he did whatever Clinton wanted and now he's doing the same for Georgie. But I digress. Are you guys European or what? I always thought so but hey, I guess you're not technically on the continent. Neither is Hawaii. Liken us to Hawaii - i.e. we are part of the continent, but probably would prefer not to be labelled as such. "Skydiving is a door" Happythoughts

Sibson does 50 tickets at the start of the season for £750 - a large initial outlay, but then it works out to £15/jump which is decent. Get that plastic out and come and jump up with us Gus! "Skydiving is a door" Happythoughts

DAMN that was a cool account, thanks! I have to say, reading your story is like i've found my lost brother - it's pretty much identical to me (even down to the dream of being an astronaut etc, realising what its all about on a tracking dive etc). "Skydiving is a door" Happythoughts

Why isn't skydiving part of the X-Games?
Newbie replied to gerryfuss's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Somewould say that when you DO grow up, then you will wonder why you spent 10,000 bucks on something that really added nothing but fun to your life. Imagine that you get laid off....You start to wonder about all that money and how much you could use it now. Give it a few years...At some point I think you will go..."Aw shit, I sure wasted a lot on jumping". It might take many more years, and it may only last a few seconds...But it WILL happen. Ever notice that folks dont like to say how much they have spent so far? yeah i hear you Ron, but jumping is more than just fun to me (although it IS a huge amount of fun too, no disputing that). I guess that time you described above will happen when i come to think "i want a house now" instead of renting, or when the car dies and i cant afford a new one, or when i want to start a family. Right now though i can enjoy the freedom of little of the real reponsibility of adult life, even though im nearing 30, and i knwo that won't last forever. How comes you are still jumping after spending all that $ if it amounts to "nothing but fun" in your words? "Skydiving is a door" Happythoughts -
Why isn't skydiving part of the X-Games?
Newbie replied to gerryfuss's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Well, I have spent over 50,000 on skydiving. Thats half a house. yeah im not disputing phree could have bought a nice car, im just wondering if he would have really not got into jumping so he COULD buy a nice car. I used to have my priorities set up so that a nice car and somewhere to live were important to me. Then i grew up and discovered there was more to life. Then i discovered jumping and realised as long as i could eat and had a roof over my head i would be happy. In the short time i have been jumping, i have spent about $10000 or so, so far, but i wouldnt have traded the experiences for a nice car or downpayment. I guess i could change my mind, but i made my first jump 5 years ago, and the desire to blow more money on it just seems to increase as the years go by. "Skydiving is a door" Happythoughts -
