I only know of a couple 'controlled burns', recently. Now is a good time for controlled burns, the winds have been light and it's dryer than a popcorn fart! I gotta tell you, a little over a year ago this past Summer, there was a huge fire in Jeff Davis County. I forget how many thousand acres got burned. All those fire fighters from all over as well as the Forest Service, fought that danged thing for about 5-days and not one structure was lost! The fire was started by rail-road workers while welding in Presidio County. They never even attempted to try to put it out when it first started. I do know, the rail-road bought a lot of fence, when it was all over. Chuck

Is that something like: Colder than a well digger's ass? Chuck

Of course! You live in San Diego... it's supposed to be like that! Chuck

Thank You! Too cool! Chuck

There is, just something about the blue skies in winter. Especially after a big snow. We got up to 53-F today. Still, a bit of a chill in the air. I love it! Chuck

Folks out there have really opened up in the last few years. Most of my work out there was for The Nature Conservancy. Talk about a hated organization when they first arrived...(you know, they're only acquiring property to high the government's black helicopters on!). People really opened up when they realized the benefit of burning, and that we would do it EXTREMELY cheaply if not free for the sake improving habitat. I don't doubt that we've probably walked some of the same trails out there. I know what you're saying! Some of the ranchers around here were terrified by The Nature's Conservancy. Their reason was, the Conservancy had bif plans of turning this country into one big park. There were a lot of mis-conceptions, mostly due to the internet and some of the trash found there. Things seem to have simmered-down and folks are being a bit more logical. I do recall, a couple years ago, some of the ranchers got upset with The conservancy because, The Conservancy was having a 'BIG' feral hog problem. They brought-in helicopters to run the hogs of Conservancy land. Well, that just shoved the hogs back onto private ranch land. Some of the ranchers got their own helicopter and spotted the hogs for us on the ground. We killed over 200 of the rotten critters! We more than likely have trod some of the same paths. Chuck

Sorry! Next time, I'll check an Atlas! Chuck

It's been about average in Chicago. We were 14F at 7:00 and it's 26F right now. In November we had 28 days of above average temp. El Nino year, things are always unusual. Seems like, in an El Nino(where's that tilde when you need it?) year, we get warmer temperatures and a lot of moisture. So far, it's been just the opposite. Chuck

When I was a kid my stepfather worked as a cameraman for CBS sports on weekends. I got to be on the end zone camera platform with him and my mom at Lambeau Field for the Ice Bowl. -15F at the start of the game I have no idea what the wind chill was since we were at the bottom of the horshoe shaped stadium( before the renovation) that faces to the north and the bay itself... but we did get to watch one of the greatest bames of all time. ( But you as a Texican may not feel quite the same way) I don't know about that. For a game like that, a fella could put-up with an awful lot! There's some die-hard fans in these parts. Chuck

From all the responses to this thread, I'd say this is a fairly chilly winter. I heard this morning it was 30-F in parts of Florida. There goes the price of orange juice! I live over-looking a valley and it was 7-F this morning. Chuck

Weather like that is more like watching the Packers in Wisconsin! Then too, you get a lot of that cold coming off of Erie. Don't forget your toque! Chuck

That's fairly chilly for that part of the country! Folks always think of the desert country as hot. I do know, it can get downright cold, though. Chuck
-
Well, it should be... it's summer there! Chuck

It was 7F when I got up this morning at 4:30. Jumping out of a plane with ice skates on? Frozen swoop pond? That sounds like too much fun! Chuck

It's a done deal, Mike. I'll keep him in my prayers. As well as your family. Chuck

Damn! That's pretty rough. If, Mother Nature will cooperate, that would be a good thing. Also, it would save tax payers the money that would be spent on some erradication program. I doubt very much though, teperatures will stay at the needed levels but you never know. Here's hoping! Chuck

I'm glad to hear you're still able to wear that uniform. By the way... Thank you! Chuck

Years ago, when I was hauling grain, I stopped at a little cafe in Oklahoma. It was on aSunday and the buffet offered fried chicken. That was un-doubtedly, the best fried chicken I ever ate. After my meal, I went to pay my bill and the elderly lady who owned that cafe had a 'to go box' for me. I hadn't asked for it but she insisted I take it 'for later'. I paid my tab and left... with the 'to go box'... at no extra charge. Later that evening, I had a fine supper of fried chicken. I was back through that part of Oklahoma a couple years later. The little road-side cafe was closed. I had been looking forward to stopping there again but I was too late. I'll never forget it. Chuck

SoCal... 10:47 AM and 64 degrees. So cold I have to wear a light jacket over my short-sleeved shirt. I was in TX until Tuesday. Looks like I picked the right time to return to CA! Yes you did! It's supposed to warm-up to the low 50's this coming week. It's been awhile since we've had any cold weather to speak of. Usually, we have Summer, a couple 'cold' days and back to Summer. Chuck

Does it get that warm in Norway? Chuck

We've been having a similar problem here with oak trees. Hopefully, you're right and this cold weather will put an end to the problem. Our overnight low was 14-F. I'm glad I got a heater for my horse's water tank. The high today is 30-F. Chuck

I saw a story on the news yesterday about Iguanas in Florida. They showed Iguanas in the cold weather there and the reptiles fall-out of the trees. When it warms-up, they become active again. It was pretty funny. They look dead but in reality, their heart rate slows down. Chuck

Look at it this way... in about 2-1/2 - 3-months it'll be Spring! Chuck
