Save the environment, buy a Hummer avoid a Prius

Do you see the costs for recycling going down either because of improved processes or higher volumes? For some people, small profit margins are still profit. Samurai for a 100 jump person

To the OP: No. It's not a good idea. Give him a couple days and Brian Germain should get back to you telling you so. After the shit that got stirred up in the "Stiletto as a student canopy", it is understandable that some folks would think you are posting this just to prolong the flamefest now that that thread has died out. I am not saying you are making this up, just explaining why some think that. If you read through the Stiletto as a student canopy thread (Not the older part of it so much as the most recent stuff) you'll see all the arguments why your friend shouldn't be under that canopy (or any elliptical for that matter) at this point in his career. Skydiverkeith: A troll is someone who post something that may or may not be true with the deliberate intent of starting a heated discussion (it's the fishing analogy). The rules are pretty clear about this, and include a link to the definition (click the "rules" at the top of the page, just under the main bar). DSE: I can see the validity of sanctioning any instructor who made a sale of this kind. Riggers are required by the FARs to "follow the manufacturers instructions" and recommendations when packing reserves and maintaining AADs. I think instructors should be held to the same standard when selling equipment, expecially if the buyer is this far from meeting the recommendations. I don't see it happening, but maybe it should. Sangi: Learn your history dude! It isn't the "Fossils from the 70's" that are so strongly against rapid downsizing. It's the fossils from the late 90's and early 2000's. When I first started, it was very common for people to downsize really fast. The good old "just be careful, and only do straight in approaches and you'll be fine" rationalization was really common. So were accidents. Look in the "Incidents" section in old copies of Parachutist. There were often 2 or 3 fatalities per month that were caused by inadequate skills under a canopy that was too advanced for the pilot. A lot of people did it and got away with it, but quite a few didn't. There was a guy at my DZ that was loading a XF 139 around 1.4. He biffed twice before he learned. broke his back the first time and was out for a few months. Didn't learn, and the 2nd time he hit hard enough to break most everything below his pelvis (including the pelvis). ICU for a week, hospital for almost a month. Six months on crutches, almost a year before he could walk without a cane. Another guy was flying a 170 Diablo at ~ 1.2 at around 100 jumps. He has had a few close calls and a 2 cutaways, but hasn't broken himself yet. Eventually USPA got tired of it and started the "Femur is not a Verb!" campaign to try to reduce the accidents (they revised the SIM too). It's been long enough since all that insanity that a lot of newer jumpers haven't seen it. I was "lucky" enough to see the end of it firsthand, and have a healthy respect for advanced canopy flight. Edit to change canopy name to the correct one because I'm an idiot. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." How recyclable are the batteries? Is there likely to be technology advances that make the recycling more efficent/cost effective? Wiki says they are Nickle-Metal Hydride batteries. I don't know how much of the nickle can be recovered, or if it is possible to re-work the materiel to be used in new batteries. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Usually about $100 (for a usable "core"), maybe $25 as scrap. And if it's in the car at the time, they give you even more for the whole (junk) car. Most junkyards have recovery/storage facilites for the motor oil and antifreeze (What other "toxic chemicals, heavy metal poisons and chemical laced oils, fluids and greases" are there?). They also have the tools and cranes to handle it, and you can certainly set a motor on the ground (carefully) without damage. The shop is already filthy, and they usually don't let the dogs in that area. I think that we will develop viable methods and markets for the junk batteries (and other stuff unique to hybrids) in time. We've had a long time (80 years or so?) to develop these techniques and market for the "regular" cars. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." I've always felt real freedom of speech is the right to say things others really don't like. While I really disagree with this guy, (and the KKK, the Westboro Baptists, the anti-gunners and a wide variety of others) I'm very glad that they have the right to say what they wish. Because that means I have the right to say stuff that "they" (the generic "they") don't want to hear. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." I dunno, looking back in recent history, that seems to be a prerequisite for the job. And Skyrider: This is just general "politican bashing". As long as we don't pick one party over another, or single out a particular politcal figure, I think the mods will leave it here. There's some subtleties to this stuff that can take a while to figure out. I've always looked at it as "Would it start a fight if the people arguing were drunk?" Yes = SC No = Bonfire "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Lucky McSwervy "~ya don't GET old by being weak & stupid!" - Airtwardo -
It doesn't matter how long it's been. If it doesn't need updating to "J" revision, (and it doesn't need anything else) it'll be the $150 (plus shipping). You're welcome

Recycling steel (or most metals AFAIK) saves a considerable amount of energy over mining and proceessing ore. That's why scrap steel is worth more than iron ore. Fair enough. If you look on the data label on the FXC, on the far right, just above the date of manufacture, there is a box marked "REV:". That's the revision (It's going to be a letter). The price list tells you what the costs are to bring the different revisions up to "J" status. Just below the mfg date is the "CAL DUE:" box. That date is 2 years from the last time it was in for service. Hope that helps you. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Lucky McSwervy "~ya don't GET old by being weak & stupid!" - Airtwardo

Don't forget than an FXC also requires a function check in an altitude chamber every repack. It's not that big of a deal, 3 tests - minimum firing speed, maximum no-fire speed and a full freefall speed accuracy check. But it needs to be done in an altitude chamber. If you don't have one, you need to get it to someone who does (and usually pay them to do it). "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Why so much on the FXC? Does it need updating to "J" status? Basic recallibration is only $150 "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Lucky McSwervy "~ya don't GET old by being weak & stupid!" - Airtwardo

My grandmother was like that (mom's side). When she died, my mom and her brother had a hell of a job going through all the stuff. Much of it went to Goodwill. (at least it went to a good place). A year or so after my dad died, my mom sold the old house and moved into a much smaller place. She gave us an opportunity to "claim" what we wanted. We took the stuff she didn't want and all have lists of what each other gets when she is gone. She has since gone through 35 years of accumulated stuff (she had done a couple "clean sweeps" in prior years). A lot of it went into the garbage (or recycle - we probably put half a ton of paper out) but we were taking a trunk load to St Vincent de Paul every other week for a long time. She said straight out that she didn't want to put us through what she went through. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Engines are steel. Steel is the number one recycled metal, and one of the top materials That is only because steel is the #1 used metal. In terms of % recycled, gold and platinum come out far higher. Very true. My point was that there isn't any cost to recycle an engine. Even a junk engine has value as scrap steel, and finding a buyer for the scrap is very easy. They all blubber a little - not the same. They dribble a bit too. Just the real ones though - the puppet ones are a bit dry. So you tried one? Yeah - I mean . . . it IS a vagina. A man's gotta do, What a mans gotta do! (or just do anything that holds still long enough) Except that one girl . . . she said "[deep southern accent]Well fuck me running backwards in a rain storm!" Engines are steel. Steel is the number one recycled metal, and one of the top materials (no link, info from History Channel's "Modern Marvels") Junkyards usually strip off usable parts and sell the rest of the steel as scrap . Last trip to the junkyard, they were paying $100/ton for basic scrap steel, $200 for "prepared" steel (clean and with nothing mixed in). Sorry. It's because we never learn... do we? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GI7-m919ynU It's different "we's" isn't it? (I'm not sure there should be an apostrophe there, but "wes" looked silly) Brit Army and Ohio National Guard. And it isn't all that surprising that the learning didn't happen. After all, the two incidents occurred within a couple years of each other. It would seem that we (both the US and the Brits) have learned since then. WD-40 isn't really a lube. It's actually a protective coating and a Water Dispersant (that's what the "WD" means). It does work good as a cleaner for a lot of things. I was taught to use a bit of WD on a rag to wipe down the yellow cables and clean them, then a dry rag to remove any leftover WD-40, then a bit of silicone on a different rag to lube them. You don't want to spray directly on the cables, and you can take a clean rag and wipe them down after putting the silicone on - you will then remove any excess, but leave behind enough to lube them. This Thread covers it a bit. It talks about what kind of silicone to use and not use. I have a can of "Food Grade" (see post #19 in the link) that is good stuff. Google results for "Food Grade Silicone buy" It's available, you just have to look for it. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit."
