Yeah!!! I thought there was a new requirement that ALL Bonfire polls had to include "Boobies" as an answer. I answered "other", but it really isn't the same. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Lucky McSwervy "~ya don't GET old by being weak & stupid!" - Airtwardo

So you don't want to jump alone, but you don't want to jump with others either?? I'm not aware of any alternatives Seriously, jump with at least one other person. You really can't develop any real skills without some point of reference for fall rate and horizontal movement. Anything you learn at this point can be applied to whatever you choose to do later. And you don't have to choose right now. This isn't college where you have to choose a discipline and are locked into it. RW not your thing? (I think you mean bigways and RW competition by that) Ok, but you still need to be able to fly relative to other people for pretty much any kind of jump. You mentioned camera flying (in the future). That requires a whole lot of skill in flying relative to the subject you are videoing. You have to be able to maintain the correct position no matter what they do to get the shot. Tandems and AFF students tend to go all over the sky. Keeping them in frame (and well lit) takes a lot of skill. THIS THREAD has lots of ideas for skill building for newer jumpers. Stuff you can do with one or two others. Don't rule out jumping with others just because serious RW doesn't appeal to you. You shouldn't have to pay for coach jumps at this point. Find someone who doesn't want to do a solo either and do a jump with them. Or do the load organizing as suggested above. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Is there a difference between being wrong and lying?
wolfriverjoe replied to wmw999's topic in Speakers Corner
So is he wrong or is he lying? If there were valid questions about the truth, and he refused to investigate them - Then it's dishonest. It may or may not be definable as a "lie", but it is well beyond being "wrong". Being deliberately wrong isn't a mistake. Refusing to verify facts is dishonest. Who Is The Man Behind The Ground Zero Mosque?
wolfriverjoe replied to SkyPiggie's topic in Speakers Corner
I have never been talking about the legality of the right to build it My question is, is it proper Many things are legal but people dont do them just because How about flipping the question around? It was already there. It is a couple blocks away from the WTC site (which is pretty far in Manhattan terms). Is it proper to deny it? DanG's post above says "not" pretty eloquently. Is there a difference between being wrong and lying?
wolfriverjoe replied to wmw999's topic in Speakers Corner
I agree, but those are the easy cases. What if he really wanted it to be true and didn't listen to any arguments to the contrary What if he was told he was wrong, but he chose not to verify it for himself. When you know you have plausible deniability, are you wrong or are you lying? The original question seems so easy, yet is so difficult. What is so difficult? Not listening to contrary arguments or refusing to verify the truth when being told it was wrong are fine examples of intellectual dishonesty. Plausible deniablity is just a fancy way of saying that you can get away with the lie. Robert Fulghum was right. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." You'd need a wingsuit to do a decent Immelman. And THIS is one of the better arguments for barrel rolls during breakoff. In a bigway no less. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Lucky McSwervy "~ya don't GET old by being weak & stupid!" - Airtwardo

Pilot lisence required to operate jumpship
wolfriverjoe replied to potatoman's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I don't know about SA, but here in the US, if anyone is paying to get on the plane, the pilot needs a commercial. It doesn't matter if the pilot is getting paid or not. There are very limited exceptions that allow passengers to equally share the cost of a trip with the pilot, if all involved are participating. For example, a private pilot could share costs with the passengers if they were going to a golf outing, and everyone was golfing. If the pilot was going to just hang out in the clubhouse while his buddies golfed, they couldn't legally share the costs of the flight. So unless the pilot is jumping too, if the skydivers are paying anything to get on the plane, the pilot needs a commercial license. Period. That doesn't mean there aren't private pilots flying jumpers out there, it just means they aren't doing it legally (here in the US anyway). Yes, but that's not why. With a steeper glide angle you have more forward speed, and more energy. You convert that forward energy into lift during the flare. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Lucky McSwervy "~ya don't GET old by being weak & stupid!" - Airtwardo

Jumping with newly-licensed skydivers
wolfriverjoe replied to almeister112's topic in Safety and Training
Oh yeah, I forgot to put in my previous post that it's really, really cool to see that you are willing to "pay it forward" and help new jumpers the way you were helped. -
He was fighting for the right to bear arms? What sheer stupidity. One of the first things the Americans did in Iraq was abolish the right to bear arms. Really? I thought they allowed each household to retain possession of an AK (real one, not the semi-auto only we have here). For self defense. First thing I could find with a quick search. Ploughshares is not a gun rights organization.http://www.ploughshares.ca/libraries/monitor/mons04i.htm "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Thank you. Of course, with the other 364 days being Petty Fascist Pig Bourgeoisie Day, why begrudge us one lousy day? Well, don't forget May 1, International Worker's Day. That's 2 lousy days. OK, fine. The People - 2 Il Fascisiti - 363 Well, many communists still celebrate Oct 25th (the overthrow of the Russian Czar). That's three. Next there will be 4, then 5, and the next thing you know, we'll all be singing the "Internationale" in the streets every day. Either that or THIS. I looked for the old SNL one by the "American Dope Growers", but I couldn't find it. Edit to add: Found It! second video down. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." For static line jumps (military or otherwise) you still need to: Gear up properly Exit the airplane properly Make sure you are up to speed on EPs (you may or may not need to execute them, but you better be able to if necessary) Land the canopy (including the landing pattern for square canopies) The only thing missing is controlled freefall. And just to argue a bit more, CRW does hop&pops almost exculsively. Should those jumps not count becuase there isn't any real freefall time? Jumping with newly-licensed skydivers

I wanted to wait for an instructor to chime in first. You both have valid licenses, right? So why not? Keep it small, keep it simple. Have fun -
Noooo - Eileen is the sister to her one leg adopted oriental Sister, Irene! You are thinking of Art . . . And to answer your question, I'd call him Skip . . . Same guy at your front door? If he's still out on the porch, Matt. And Art doesn't lean on the wall, he hangs on it. How about 2 guys hanging on the wall? "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." So you support the death penalty for those who brutaly murder and rape. Do you also support it for the prosecutors, cops and "expert" witnesses who wrongfully convict and execute the innocent? If the "system" brutally murders the innocent, shouldn't those in charge of it be held accountable? They certainly aren't now. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Your first anything jump is exciting. That can be first solo, first group jump, first jump on a new canopy, anything. And for me, anyway, the most exciting jump is the next jump. No matter what kind it is.

No, I didn't day diety. I did, however, say (type actually) it. Thanks. I believe in God, although I don't participate in any organized religion. I haven't been able to quite decide if God is real, or simply a construct of my own mind. I have decided that it really doesn't matter. If he is real, then I am doing the best I can to understand his will and carry it out That usually means helping my fellow man and doing the best I can to make the world a better place for all, while doing as little damage or hurt as possible. If he isn't real, then I have an ideal, perfect construct that I am using to do my best to help my fellow man and make the world a better place, while doing as little damage or hurt as possible. Real or unreal, the end result is the same. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Lucky McSwervy "~ya don't GET old by being weak & stupid!" - Airtwardo

There was an interesting story on NPR last week. In short, an atheist psychologist had a spiritual experience, and it made him wonder why. And he noticed that all cultures in the world have had some sort of religion. So he came to the conclusion that there must be some sort of evolutionary benefit to religion. So he did some experiments and research and came up with the the theory that having a deity watching over a society made it far more likely to cooperate.
