Spotting Training - do you see it happening?
wolfriverjoe replied to chuckakers's topic in Safety and Training
And how do you do that? I sort of believed it would just become intuitive over time of being told where it was, but it doesn't seem any more intuitive than it used to.. is there some sort of formula for knowing this?? Some of us have much less positional/geographic instincts than others, so to some that might come naturally but to me that is something I will need to be taught and/or force myself to learn very intentionally and specifically. I am not disagreeing, I would like to know, but don't have any idea how one would go about teaching OR learning that...? The positional/geographic thing is mostly familiarity with your home DZ. What landmarks are 1 mile out? 2 miles? An overhead aerial photo of the DZ is a big help. Most places have one (East Troy does IIRC). Spend some time studying it. This Thread is kinda old, but has some good info in it. Post 9 covers a lot of both theory and practice. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Thank you. That's exactly how I meant it. Sort of like the policy of breaking off high speed chases. While there are some very valid reasons for having the policy, I have heard of people who ran from the police and deliberately drove dangerously (running other cars off the road and such) in the hope that the cops would break off the chase and they (the runner) could get away. Oh I like that! Wendy P. Thanks. Although it isn't original. I think it was NWFlyer's (Krisanne) sigline a while back, but I could be mistaken. I've also heard a very similar one: "Carrying a resentment is like drinking poison and hoping the other person gets sick" And Happythoughts: Yes, I know. Having high expectations of how a person will treat me can be counterproductive. But it isn't necessarily about how they treat me. How they treat their family, friends and even strangers can be very telling. I heard a long time ago to judge someone not how they treat their equals or superiors, but how they treat those under them. If they treat a waiter like crap because he (or she) is "just hired help", that's a really bad sign. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." You aren't going to "win" a confrontation with the police. You aren't going to "win" a fight with them either. Ever. They have the power to "win" every time, and their authority requires that they not lose. Even if they are wrong. If they lose a fight, then everyone who thinks they are tough will fight them. If they lose a confrontation then everyone will be confrontational with them. Smile, say "Yes, sir", get their badge number and call your lawyer. It's a lot easier in the long run. The OP is a good example of this. If I read the account (including the "between the lines" stuff) then he was drunk and belligerent towards the cop. The cop couldn't back off, and the old dude wouldn't (or couldn't because he was drunk). It's easy to say the cop could have been more gentle, but cocking your fist at a cop is going to get you slammed no matter who or how old you are. I have heard from Homicide cops that it is good to rub under your nose before arriving at a death scene that may be several days old. The guys that pick up roadkill around here use it too. Have you ever had to deal with a deer that's been dead for a few days in July? "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Don't make this a woman/man thing ... there are selfish people of both sexes. Also, you may want to wait until the "bitter" wears off a bit before entering a new relationship. If you don't, you'll end up being the "taker" in your next one ... or take it out on the next one ... and that doesn't work either. O Well, for me it's a woman thing. Mainly because I won't be getting into a romantic relationship with a guy I left "man" or "woman" out of the main part of my post on purpose. Because it does happen to and because of both sides. The "bitterness" extends only to one person. Someone had the sigline "Holding on to a resntment is like holding a hot coal and hoping the other person gets burned." So I am working on forgiveness, and have come a long way, but it can be hard. And while I am looking for a relationship, I am being fairly careful in the selection process. Looking for honesty and selfishness (or lack of) in all areas, not just towards me. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 38 SPC and 45 ACP aren't exactly overflowing off the shelves, either. No but they are out there and the price has come down some from the astronomical levels of last year. .380 isn't and hasn't. That supply and demand thing. Lots of .380 weapons being sold lately. Thank goodness for Mike Dillon. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Good luck finding ammo. .380 is almost impossible to find and very pricey when you can find it. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Lucky McSwervy "~ya don't GET old by being weak & stupid!" - Airtwardo

There's a lot of truth there. I once heard that if both partners were ok with a 60/40 split (each gives 60 and expects 40 back) that it would work out. But when it goes to 90/10 it stops being ok. When it goes to "Give me everything I want and I might give you just a little bit", then it's over. Or will soon be. Note: I'm still a little bitter, but I fully realize not all women are like this. I just have to find one who isn't. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Lucky McSwervy "~ya don't GET old by being weak & stupid!" - Airtwardo

I only wear it on days that I'm packing. It's the only way I don't lose it. But if I'm on the plane and notice I forgot to take it off I'll throw it in my pocket. No. Ever. Wrapping something around your neck that will kill you before it breaks is not a good idea. Find another way to stow it. We'd miss you. (although the risk is low, why take it?) You (and I) may be in the minority, but we aren't alone. You just have to accept that by not allowing that sort of behavior, you are limiting your choices. You can also get a feel for your partner's overall moral attitude (morals do not mean religion) by how they behave in the real world. How much cheating (outside of relationships) is acceptable to them? Found wallets, being undercharged at a restaraunt, that sort of thing. Honesty (or lack of) tends to spread itself throughout our entire lifestyle. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Spotting Training - do you see it happening?
wolfriverjoe replied to chuckakers's topic in Safety and Training
Some of us jump from a 182. Without GPS. Although I jumped at a neighboring DZ on Sunday and they have put a GPS in their 182. The pilot let us know when we were straight above the DZ and opened the door. My jump partner did the spotting, but all he had to do was call the cut. I've always liked hanging my head out the door and taking a good look for any traffic (either in the air or moving around on the airport) whether the jumprun is good or not (and it's always nice to be sure). Our pilots are pretty good at putting us where we need to be, but they listen to any "fine tuning" we ask for on jump run. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." She didn't draw a blank. Look a little closer. She just stuck it in the middle of the "In reply to". Rafflers - You know Airtwardo personally. He's got tons of great quotes on here. Sitflying as a substitute for a lack of diving skills? I hope the phrasing of the question answers it for you. Watching the video, I wonder if a simple hard arch (a real hard arch) would have gotten you down more easily than the dive attempts. I'm no RW expert, but when I dive, I start in a standard belly arch "boxman", sweep my arms back and straighten my legs. I lower my head a little, but I don't de-arch at all. You looked like you were trying a "jackknife" swimming dive. I think a couple jumps with a qualified RW coach and video would be a big help. Watch the video again. The canopy is spinning hard enough to fling the jumper out horizontally. Which means it is diving straight at the ground. Under those circumstances, if he had waited longer, the spin could have developed enough force that the jumper couldn't have lifted his arms to reach the cutaway handle. As the previous post from the OP said, there's a world of difference between big student canopies and smaller ellipticals. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." No, I'm listening. It's just that not listening isn't an exclusively male characteristic. If the woman cuts the man off from sex first, and because of the lack of physical intimacy the man then becomes emotionally distant, who's fault is it? If the woman continually changes the rules, why is it the man's fault for not understanding what the woman wants (or if she isn't willing to say what she wants)? I'm not trying to say that it's this way all the time, but (for once) I agree with Shah. If his side of the story is accurate (not always the case, but I'll give him the benefit of the doubt in this case) he was doing a lot of the work while his wife sat and watched TV. And then wanted him to listen to all her problems, while his problems weren't important. And BTW, I've learned (I had a kind and patient woman friend explain) that when women are complaining, they generally want to simply vent. They don't want answers, suggestions or solutions. They just want a sympathetic ear. Guys tend to be "solution oriented". We see problems as needing to be solved. So we listen to the complaints, then try to come up with answers, suggestions and solutions. Which isn't what the woman wanted. So she gets annoyed, and we are baffled as to why. You didn't really "have that discussion". Turtle kinda bailed and didn't really answer. My question still stands. Does the majority have the right to deny rights to the minority? To address the issue of gays in the military - Should serving soldiers who are prejudiced against gays be allowed to deny gays the right to serve? There isn't a draft anymore. Noone is being forced to serve in the military. If someone really hates blacks and isn't willing to serve in the military with them, they don't have to. If someone really hates gays and doesn't want to serve in the military with them, why should it be the gay who has to leave? "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." I'm going to guess that giving civil rights to blacks in the sixties was pretty offensive to the majority in the deep south. Was it correct to shove it down their throats back then? I'm starting to doubt that there are any real liberal or conservatives. Sure, they may disagree on guns or abortion or health care, but they are all more interested in being in power and telling other people what to do. They seem more interested in arguing and fighting each other and telling the public that they are right than actually governing. All of them say whatever the party line is (along with "I will represent you and not just follow the party line") in order to get elected, and then screw over the little guy to appease the lobbyists with the most money for their campaign funds. There are a few that don't fit that mold (Lieberman, Feingold and McCain come to mind), but only a few. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." The mods here simply make sure others follow the rules. They are entitled to their opinions. And free to express and argue those opinions. I have yet to see a post deleted or a poster banned simply for disagreeing or arguing with one of the mods. One in particular will allow more slack if you are arguing with him than he allows if you are arguing with others. I don't see any political "side" getting banned more than another, although I do wish the blatant trolling and indirect name calling was punished a bit more. Acting like a 3-year-old doesn't seem to be bannable. I would like to see constant infantile behavior clamped down on a little harder. But it isn't my site. It's Sangrio's. It's been said more than once that this place isn't a democracy. If you don't like it, leave and start your own place. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 'I [Heart] Boobies' Bracelets Cause Stir in High Schools

Are you really that foolish? Expecting school administrators to excercise a little bit of judgement and apply a little bit of common sense? Especially when the word "Boobies" is involved? 3 questions: Any discount for no alcohol? (Some of us don't drink) How much are jump tix after the first five are gone? Are the outside trips included in the price or are they extra? If she is going places you don't want her, try putting contact paper sticky side up on the surfaces she would jump onto or walk on. They don't like walking on the sticky stuff and will learn to avoid it. Or find an alternate route. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit."
