Don't for get that this exists here http://diverdriver.com/forum/index.php Bump. The diverdriver site is no longer with us. I don't blame Chris for not keeping it going, but I will really miss it. So will others. So how about a jump pilot/airplane forum? "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Lucky McSwervy "~ya don't GET old by being weak & stupid!" - Airtwardo

It wasn't the fracking itself that caused the earthquakes in Ohio. It was a wastewater well. They put the leftover stuff in a deep well under very high pressure. The fault site was right near the waste well, and the quakes were directly related to how much waste material was being punped down. http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=ohio-earthquake-likely-caused-by-fracking "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Nice!!! You need to work on your exits a little. And adjusting your fall rate while linked a little. And not flipping your partner over a little. Just a couple minor improvements in a couple of areas and you'll be ready to take on Airspeed, right?? Seriously, you landed safely, learned something and had fun. That makes it a succesful jump in my opinion. And I laughed my ass off reading the cartoon. I've made a "zoo dive" or two myself. I remember the first time I accidentaly ended up in someone's burble and crashed down on their back. And last summer a 4 way linked exit flipped upside down on the hill. We spent about 4000' fighting each other trying to flip it over without letting go the grips before breaking apart. Of course, trying to do an inverted 4way round launched exit, on purpose would be pretty hard. Accidentaly however... It's just really funny. I've never heard that someone has to hit rock bottom. They simly have to hit a bottom. That's simply the point when the person decides that they've had enough and don't want to get any worse. For some, it's waking up in a puddle of puke and/or piss one too many times. For others, it's being told by their families that "we love you but until you get help we aren't going to have enything to do with you." Others require a trip (or more than one) to prison. Some don't ever get it and thier final bottom is death. To the OP - She won't get better until she wants to. Returning to prison, having the kids taken, being cut off from the family, ect. may help her decide that she's had enough, but without a desire to stop, she never will. I hope you (and your family) will do what you can to help the kids, they are the true innocent victims in this situation. Make it clear to her that you love her, but won't continue to enable her. And stick to it (and that's a lot harder to do than to say here). Good luck. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Meh. We put them in an attraction, make them earn their herring. And before anybody starts screaming about exploitation, the dolpin can leave anytime it wants to... Just out of curiostiy... Did they do an environmental impact study during the planning process? If they did, why didn't it identify this as a problem. If not, WHY DIDN"T THEY? Ok, to make sure I understand this... In order for a reserve pack job to be Airworthy (legal to jump) it must be done by an appropriately rated rigger (not supervised by). But a rigger may supervise a reserve packjob for training purposes, so that the person being supervised can meet the requirements to get the rating. And while that supervised packjob can be logged and counts toward rating requirements, it is not airworthy (and not legal to jump). I have to admit that these nuanced interpretations of the regs get very nit-picky, but are kinda interesting. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." OMG! Californians own guns with "bullet buttons"!
wolfriverjoe replied to JohnRich's topic in Speakers Corner
You should see the new stocks that you can set up for single round, or three round or multiple round firing They work just like the select fire on an M16 I will NOT buy one I could not afford the ammo if I did They're pretty clever, but little more than the old "Hell-Fire" trigger spring. Which was little more than the old "rubber band behind the trigger" trick. Which was a way for people who didn't know how to "bump fire" or fan the trigger to get simulated full auto out of a semi auto. I've seen guys who can fire anything from a three round burst to to emptying an entire mag at what seems like full auto. From a semi auto. Just make sure the gun can take it. If there's no recoil buffer in the springs, then the bolt will end up coming out othe back of the receiver sooner or later. And these "fixed magazines" that are removable with a tool (or any pointed object) are a fine example of ingenuity getting around stupid bans. Just like when the Tec-9 was banned by name, the maker changed a few parts around and called the "new" gun the DC-9. And then sold it legally. Can't see the post without logging in. Sounds a lot like the one off the powered paraglider that's being discussed in General. The 103, 91 and 105 issues are covered there. (Hint - it is a pretty blatant violation of the regs) I can see the FAA taking an interest in it. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." well, since you are asking about what to demo, try to compare and contrast the bigger differences. The Safire, Sabre2 and Pilot are very similar, and at your experience level, I don't know that you'd be able to tell much difference. So try a 7-cell vs 9-cell. Or hybrid construction vs Zero-P. Or try flying a reserve as main demo. If you've only flown Zero-P 9-cells, flying a 7-cell F-111 will be a bit different. Far better to have your first experience on one under controlled and expected conditions than right after your first mal and chop. Home Land Security buying up ammunition?
wolfriverjoe replied to StreetScooby's topic in Speakers Corner
Just a few thoughts on this. Hornady doesn't make or market primers. So to say that "a Federal officer from the US Government that said all of the 5 million primers they had on hand could not be sold until they were inspected by the Government," is a load of crap. And while 5 million sounds like a big number, it's not that much really, just 1000 sleeves. The big manufacturers (Federal, Winchester, Remington, Speer/CCI) probably go through that in less than a week. And Hornady is a fairly small company. They concentrate on premium hunting and self defense ammo. Their entire production for a year is probably less than a month's worth of one of the biggies. Buying up all of Hornady's production wouldn't cause a shortage overall. And last, but certainly not least, Hornady is in Grand Island Nebraska, not Oregon. Of course, DHS did just place a huge order with ATK for millions of. 40, but that's a whole different story. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." It gets complicated and is subject to interpretation. But an utralight operated with a passenger doesn't fall under 103, because 103 requires a single occupant. So by default it falls under 91. And somewhere in there (not sure exactly where) 2-occupant untralight operations are restricted to "instruction purposes only." Which, kind of like tandem skydiving, allows for passengers to go up for a fun "instructional" flight. And I don't think the FAA will go for an "instructional" flight where the student doesn't land with the aircraft. And while "objects" can be dropped with reasoanable care (so as to not present a hazard), making an intentional parachute jump falls under part 105, which requires a TSO'd harness and reserve. A big one. Big, slow and docile. First jump canopies often run 250 square feet or larger. Manta student canopies run 288 normally (there are other sizes available). You will progress to smaller canopies incrementally as you gain experience and skill. All of those will be provided to you by the DZ. By the time you are ready to buy your own first canopy, you will have a much better idea of what you will want. Patience. Your enthusiasm is a good thing, but it can be taken too far. Bolding mine. Can you back that up at all? That's what the anti-gun crowd has been preaching for almost 20 years. When Florida started the current trend of "Shall Issue" carry permits in the early 90's, there were dire predictions of shootouts over traffic accidents, the streets "running with blood" and a lot of other fear-mongering. It didn't happen. Law abiding gun owners usually don't commit murders. Last fall, when Wisconsin finally adopted a carry permit law, there was an interview with a sheriff down near Madison who expressed his concerns that the SUICIDE rate would rise significantly. There has been enough history to show that the homicide rate wouldn't go up, so this bozo decided to fearmonger that the increased availablity of guns would give suicidal people more opportunity. Really. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Lucky McSwervy "~ya don't GET old by being weak & stupid!" - Airtwardo

Or you might not want to take a plane nicknamed the "Flying Warning Light" directly over a thunderstorm in the first place. Great story. I read it back in junior high. That never inspired her to try it for herself just once? I'm a bit surprised by that. She wants to, but isn't willing to. Skydiving and families (part 2)

Thought #1 - Don't try to "convince" him to do it. If he wants to, great. If not, not. As you said in your opening line, it's not for everyone. Thought #2 - Is it practical to go out to the DZ when you won't be jumping? Take him out and let him see the operation without the stress and worry of having to see you jump. Let him see the operation, the gear checks, the attention to detail, all the stuff that makes it a lot safer than most people think. And the smiles and energy. How much fun we have. That's how I did it. I invited my mom out to watch when I was going to fly the plane and not jump. Knowing she wouldn't have to see me doing it allowed her to watch without having to worry about her "little boy" being in danger. She had a blast. She really enjoyed watching the whole operation going on. She said later that she was able to enjoy it and take it in much better without having to worry about me. So the next time I was jumping, I again invited her out. She came and watched, this time knowing I'd be jumping. She again had a blast. We had inside video on the jumps I did, so we'd put the raw footage up on the TV in the hangar while we packed. She was absoultely fascinated seeing the jump footage after watching us from the ground. There was a high, thin overcast so that she could see us in the sky really well. She commented on the way home that she was surprised not to get the "pit of the stomach" fear when she saw us in the air. She became a fairly regular fixture at the DZ for the last couple years we were open. Her favorite was the first time tandems. She always got a kick out of how different they were before and after the jump. -
The "don't pass on the right" laws pertain to don't pass in the shoulder (non travel lane). Not that you cannot overtake some stupid idiot in the left lane when there is more than one lane in your direction of travel. Otherwise on a 5-lane highway, we would all be slaved to the doofus in the left lane doing 6 below the speed limit. Techncially, "Don't Pass On The Right" means just that. Which means that, yes, you can be held hostage by an idiot going slow in the left lane. Although, also technically, the idiot in the left lane going slowly is impeding traffic (which is a citable offense, though rarely enforced). The correct thing is for the slower vehicle to move into the right lane and let you go by. But in a pickup? In Texas Maryland (or anywhere)? oops, misread OP That ain't gonna happen. Edit to fix error and add: You may want to call the tag in and ask if it's a legit cop car. Some places allow (or at least used to allow) red/blue lights on officer's personal vehicles. Others have unmarked official vehicles that are pretty well disguised. If you simply say that this particular vehicle passed you with lights and it wasn't very official looking, they may say it's a "stealth" cop car, or they may thank you because it's a poser. FWIW, IN uses Mustangs, VA used to use a BMW, there are others that don't look like cop cars, but are occupied by uniformed officers and have all the "cop equipment" inside. I'm going to disagree with this. I had a couple slammers on my Sabre2 (170) and had a master rigger suggest focusing on making sure the sides of the slider were fully pulled out. He said that, for the Sabre2, the front/back isn't as important as the sides. It's worked very well so far. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Yes, but if you start at 50, you will have to work very hard to get the skills needed for a 60 way by the time you are eligible for SOS. Maybe by JOS eligibility. CAN YOU TELL ME WHY THIS HAPPENED

I think she's cuter when she moons us. Ya know... (_!_) Amyr - Please don't stop asking questions. That's how you learn. The problem is that there is stuff that's really hard to explain on these boards. And until you figure out who knows their shit and who is full of it, taking any advice or information from here has it's hazards. But please don't keep your mouth shut for fear of getting kidded for not knowing. Admitting you don't know and asking about stuff is the only way to learn. Some places don't cover the technical stuff. like how stuff works and what does what, as well as they should. I'm a detail nerd, and interested in how stuff is put together and operates. So I made a point of understanding my gear as thoroghly as I could as soon as possible. I asked a lot of questions, did some research and learned stuff. Having the canopy split in half isn't usually covered in the malfunction section because it's a pretty self-evident situation. You have the checklist correct. Is it - There? Square? Controllable? It's pretty obvious that 2 seperate square sections aren't landable. It also is a pretty unusual malfunction. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." If i ever go to another dropzone and have to rent equipment do they tell you this is a non free fly friendly rig? Or am i supposed to be able just by looking at it able to determine what type of rig this is? If you don't know, ask. Some places have nice, new, modern rental gear that is fully freefly friendly. Other places... Not so much. But in any case, the DZ won't want you to get hurt or damage their gear, so they should be happy to tell you if it's not. Like others have said, the best way to learn this stuff is at the DZ, with the gear right in front of you. It makes a lot more sense that way. Some of this stuff would take 3 pages to explain, but three words with the gear right there to show you. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit."
