Can you have soft stand up landing on rears??
wolfriverjoe replied to stayhigh's topic in Safety and Training
Can you please elaborate on this? Most airplanes that I'm familiar with do stall suddenly and completely. There is a fair amount of warning before the stall occurrs - first the mushiness of slow flight, then the horn going off, then the buffeting. But when the plane stalls, it's usually a sharp "break" and you feel it "fall out of the sky." Not all that different from riser stalls, it's more that you don't feel the mushiness or buffeting (and there isn't a stall horn). And thanks to those who elaborated on the comparison between toggle input and flaps and the way that a toggle stall is progressive from the outside in. I forgot/didn't think of those. He was obviously distracted by the boobies :) Yup. Looking at the boobies, pondering who it could be, looking at the boobies, looking up a couple profiles, looking at the boobies, pondering who it could be, looking at the boobies, composing my guess post, looking at the boobies. Kasch put in his guess and had it confirmed as correct while I was doing all that. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Why have there been so few guesses?!?! missbrz is kind enough to get the ladies to submit their pics (and this one even has nipples) and all anybody does is bitch that it's too grainy. Sheesh Ok, hmmm... Grainy and a top view. Makes it more difficult. No background clues, except for what's maybe a white tank top or tube top pulled down. No visible tan lines, but not pale skin. So either darker skin to begin with or tans topless. Smallish (but still very nice) and perky. No sag visible (at least from that angle). Not one that I've seen before, as far as I know. Someone newer, younger, a bit more adventureous, and smaller in size. (removed incorrect guess) Edit to add: I was composing my post when kasch got it right. Wow, Deedy? I don't see the freckle pattern that is her "trademark" and they look a lot different from that angle. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Off Landings and Law Suits.
wolfriverjoe replied to tsalnukt's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
What do the other outs there look like? You don't say where you are. Horses can be a real problem. They are panicky and can easily hurt themselves badly enough that they end up getting put down. Just because you don't see them doesn't mean it isn't happening. I've heard claims that the flapping of the canopy and slider is enough to spook them. I've been to a DZ that specifically says to not land at the horse farm (pointed out very clearly during the briefing) because they had an incident where a horse was spooked, got hurt and had to be put down. If that was to occur, the jumper probably could be held liable. Especially if you've been told not to land there before. And good quality show, performance, or racing horses aren't cheap. Once is an emergency. More than once, not so much. Not with the control we have. We aren't jumping rounds "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Can you have soft stand up landing on rears??
wolfriverjoe replied to stayhigh's topic in Safety and Training
If I understand your question correctly, you're asking why the stall is more sudden on rears than toggles, right? It's because of the difference in how the canopy is distorted by the different control input. Toggles are attached to the very back of the canopy and only pull down on the tail. Rears are attached to the back half (more or less) of the canopy and pull down a lot more of the surface area. Toggles give a lot more precise control than rears, so you don't have the "exactness" when using the rears and can stall it unintentionally. Crank a turn using the toggles, and then try one with just rears. That will give you an idea of how the different control inputs make the canopy react differently. At least that's how I understand it. If I have something wrong, I welcome correction. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Canopy performance vs. malfunction rate/severity
wolfriverjoe replied to Chris3D's topic in Gear and Rigging
Nope. Check the stats. While injury (particularly stuff like ankles and legs from bad landings) may be higher for students, many if not most deaths happen to experienced jumpers. It's the old adage about the most dangerous time for a pilot being around 100 hours. Enough experience to think you know what your doing, not enough to realize how little you actually know. And you don't have to spend a "rather large amount of money" right away. Go to the DZ, hang out and watch. Ask questions. All for free. Explain the situation and ask if you can sit through the First Jump Course. Some places will allow you to sit through some or all of the classroom part with the understanding that if you decide to continue and jump that you will pay full price. And if the DZ won't let you do that, the FJC isn't all that much, even for the both of you. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Are you going to be at SDC for Summerfest? Yes, you sometimes come across as an "asshole young kid who needs a good smack" (your words, not mine), but I don't judge anyone on here just by what they post on here. Canopy performance vs. malfunction rate/severity
wolfriverjoe replied to Chris3D's topic in Gear and Rigging
That is exactly it. For example, line twists on student canopies are commonplace. I had them on every static line jump. They don't cause much more than a slow turn. On my 190 Triathlon, they happened rarely, but when they did, they usually caused a turn, but not a terribly rapid one. On my (current canopy) Sabre2 170 the few times they have happened, the turn is faster, but not violently so. A friend has a Diablo 170 at about 1.4:1 and he has had a cutaway due to line twists (and another he took way too low fighting out of them). Another friend has a Jedei 136 at about 1.7:1 and if he gets any twists during opening, he has to get out of them before the canopy fully inflates or he has to chop it. Brake fires are similar. Student canopies, no big deal, just a medium slow turn. My Tri, moderate rear riser input would stop the (fairly rapid) turns, My Sabre2, I just had the first one and I couldn't stop it with the rears and had to pop the brakes, and it was a pretty wild ride. My friend with the Diablo had a cutaway due to spinning line twists that turned out to be a brake fire (we found it when we untwisted the canopy). It's one of the reasons smaller, faster canopies require experience to fly safely. "Being careful" and "Mad Skilz" may let a jumper handle one when stuff goes right, but when the defecation hits the rotary oscillator, being careful won't be enough. Hmmm.... Beautiful, flawless pale skin. Nice sized. Not too big, not too small. Shadow of shorter hair on the neck. Great taste in lingerie. The lack of tan means most of the Florida or Texas regulars are out. Or that it's someone smart enough to keep out of the sun. The backgound offers a few clues, but I can't figure anything out from them. Hmmm... It's not a rack that I recognize, so it probably isn't someone who has played before. I got both Deedy and Grasshoppergirl by recognizing previous pics (Grasshoppergirl was very recent and Deedy has a lovely but unique pattern of freckles that gave her away). A guess based on comments about newer posters willing to play if the game got restarted - TriGirl. love the analysis! and good guess! but no. I'll give you a hint, she's a newer poster. Important things require careful consideration. Namowal? She doesn't look like a sun-worshipper in the pics I've seen of her. She's got longer hair, but it could be pulled to the side. Have you jumped at all yet? Do you have any idea how physically and mentally taxing each jump is to you? Each person reacts differently. For some students, more than one or two jumps per day is too much. Others can do more. But to slam all 8 AFF jumps into 3 days sounds a bit much to me. And that's assuming no repeats. Repetition and jumping frequently can improve retention and help you learn better. But there's a limit to it. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." ding ding ding! we have a winner! your prize is NOTHING! ABSOLUTELY NOTHING! but good job I need new pics from less well known people to make these games more challenging... Wait, I thought you got to squeeze the ass at the next possible opportunity if you guessed right? Does that prize also go to those who guessed correctly in the "Rack" thread too?? I don't think Skypiggie is a sock puppet. I'm pretty good at spotting them. It's more of a "feeling" based on vocabulary, grammar, misspellings (those are some of the best indicators) and the general "rythm and cadence" of the post. Reading it out loud helps with that. I think Quade was making a general reference. And I think he got the order wrong - Poster, ban imposed, then the sockpuppet. Paying attention to who is posting stuff they are likely to get banned over is another way of spotting them - especially the really prolific ones. And yet you all still wonder why more women won't post their boobie pics. Nope, don't wonder in the least. I can barely imagine the maelstorm (or should that be malestorm) of PMs and e-mails that deluge any of the participants in this game. I'm just grateful that some of you ladies are brave (or foolish) enough to do so. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Heh! I forgot about that post. Thanks :-) Did you also forget that you temporarily changed your avatar pic? Ryoder's comment about the pornographic memory (or would that be pornographic mammary?) is pretty accurate too. NEVER underestimate the determination of the stalker guys on here. Although the women were better guessers in the earlier parts of the game. Oh yeah... THANKS A TON Missbriz for taking the game over!!! Ok, just to play devil's advocate... When you inspected the rig, you found serious problems with it (The AAD was 10 years older than advertised). Why didn't you simply call the dude, say that the inspection revealed serious problems and then send it back? Walk completely away from the deal. Someone who would make that kind of mistake isn't someone I'd buy a rig from. What else is wrong that you didn't find? And I have to agree with the above post that anyone who isn't willing to send the rig to an independent third party for inspection won't get my business. That's assuming a seller who I don't know in any way (reference the "Degrees of Seperation thread - I can get to quite a few jumpers in two or three degrees and that may be enough). No. It is a mechanical device and subject to failure. For a wide variety of reasons and under a wide variety of circumstances. That's why we have reserves. That's why we drill our EPs until they are second nature. To your original question: Other than the drouge setup, that sounds very similar to the Static line progression here in the US. And addding in the drouge chute jumps to reinforce stability during the first few "freefalls" sounds like a good idea to me. Those were the hardest levels for me to get through. Yes, the size is in square feet. Canopies are usually identified by their name, and then a number, which is the size. The measuring methods vary a bit, but canopies listed as the same size are usually comparable sizes. By happy coincidence, the size in square feet goes along with your exit weight in pounds to give a wingloading ratio. Exit weight is your entire weight ready to go out the door. You, your clothes, all your gear. For beginners, keeping the wingload under 1:1 (one pound per square foot of canopy) is a good idea. The more heavily loaded the canopy is, the faster and more aggressive it will act. If you are of average size, a canopy around 230-250 is a good place to start. Once you have some experience, a 170-210 is a typical choice. This is general info. Your personal choice is dependent on your skills, experience, training, location (DZ elevation plays a part in size choice) and on and on. You do realize that there is no door on the Super Guppy right? In order: Yes, it's a good canopy. Just about any non-elliptical would be appropriate. I won't comment much on the size other than to say that keeping the W/L under 1:1 is smart. Used that size can be tough to find. Scour the classifieds daily. Hit up the major gear shops (SQ1, Chutingstar ect) Hit up the less major dealers (likestojump and Gravitygirl on here among others). Post a "wanted" ad. Search "Rigger as escrow" or just "escrow" to find out how to buy something safely through the classifieds. Chutingstar also has some really good articles on iit on their site (I'm too tired and lazy to dig them up right now). Chutingstar also offers free escrow for purchases, you just have to pay for the inspections. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit."
