  1. Give us a chance! We're still trying to figure out how to get into space! Tomorrow, we're launching a pan of lasagna I thought it was going to be a bowl of petunias. Oh, no! Not again! 2. Are you exaggerating this? I don't think that is NEARLY enough time to go through all the basics, the emergency procedures, practice exits, etc... It took me five hours and I wish I had more time. Does this concern anyone else? The OP mentioned "waiting 10 days for the winds." That makes me think that the full FJC had already been done, and this was a pre-jump refresher brief. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 3. The two best moments when family comes to visit are the moment you first see them arrive... And the moment they leave. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Lucky McSwervy "~ya don't GET old by being weak & stupid!" - Airtwardo
  4. There's also rules for R/C aircraft that include having the operator keep the aircraft in sight. If the operator is using onboard video and flies out of sight of the operator (or an assistant), then there are some FARs being violated. 5. And to expand on that, the last thing a pilot wants or needs during an emergency is to have a lot of weight shifting around. Unless the pilot says "Go!" or it's clearly apparent that it's time to leave (like the plane is spinning downwards), then sit still! 6. The milk issue isn't a subsidy, it's a minimum price support system. And if the bill expires, the "old rules" (from 1949) will apply. And that will cause prices to rise. Unless the SecAg intervenes, like the rules allow. It's not going to cause major problems, but it's a significant symptom of how stupid Congress (both houses, both parties) has become. http://www.washingtonpost.com/business/economy/if-congress-doesnt-avoid-dairy-cliff-milk-prices-could-double/2012/12/27/11908108-505f-11e2-8b49-64675006147f_story.html "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 7. Modifications are Master Rigger tasks. If Mirage has an approved procedure, any competent MR could do it. I took a quick look at Mirage's site, and didn't find anything on it (although it may be there and I missed it). Depending on how involved it is, I'd be most comfortable having the guys that built the thing in the first place be the ones doing the work. YMMV
  8. The biggest problem with accurately estimating DGUs is that most (well over 90%) end with the aggressor running away with no shots being fired. In many of these, the DGUer doesn't bother to call the pollice, so there isn't any record of the incident. Look through the "Did you ever have to use your gun" thread. Most are "I felt threatened, I showed the person that I was able and willing to use force to stop them, they left." And with no police reports, you have to take people at their word. I think there's a world of difference between someone using a gun to defend themselves and someone seeing a flying saucer, but those who don't wish to believe guns can be used for good will make the comparison to discredit the idea of self-reporting. And some of those people aren't going to tell the truth. Some will minimize what they did, others will exaggerate. In an ideal world, the two extremes would cancel each other out, but it's not ideal. Because of this, the Kleck study is flawed. How flawed is a subject of a lot of debate. And the Kellerman study, while statistically accurate, is flawed becuase it only counts self defense deaths. It completely ignores all the incidents where a gun was used in self defense where the attacker didn't die. It's also flawed because it counts any relationship between the shooter and the decedent as "friends" or "family." That includes members of opposing gangs and estranged spouses (both homicide and self defense) "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 9. You've made this claim several times in recent days. Professor. Can you back it up? I know of the "43 time more likely to kill a friend or family member than to kill an intruder." That is an old claim first put out by the "Brady Bunch" that is flawed because: A - It includes anyone aquainted with anyone (including gang memebers) as "friends" and includes estranged spouses as "family." B - Intruders are killed in a very small percentage of defensive gun uses. Less than one percent of confrontations end with the intruder dead. So where does your claim come from? 10. Well, one way is for the teachers to keep the guns concealed (on their person). If the out-of-control student doesn't know that the teacher has a gun, then they won't know to try and grab it. I wouldn't want the teachers who are carrying to be publicized. It makes them targets in a number of different ways. It's not the easiest thing to do, it requires thought, planning and training. It requires careful selection of gun, holster, placement and clothing. But it's perfectly doable. I know people who carry on a regular basis. Some have done so for years (here in Wisconsin, it wasn't legal to do so until last year). And if they weren't close enough friends that they trusted me enough to tell me, then I wouldn't know. In fact, I just recently found out that one friend has almost always had a pistol on him, for years. Because it wasn't legal to do so, he didn't tell anyone and kept it well hidden. He isn't a paranoid "gun nut", he's a retired Marine with combat experience. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 11. You really might want to reconsider your priorities. Have you read the two "stickies" in the Photog & Vid forum? "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Lucky McSwervy "~ya don't GET old by being weak & stupid!" - Airtwardo
  12. There is a federal excise tax on imported firearms and ammunition when the importer sells or uses the firearms or ammunition. I'm not aware of any others (doesn't mean there aren't any). Sales tax would be a general tax, not addressing a particular purpose like the taxes on cigarettes, car gas or aviation fuel. There's a tax on every new gun sold. Every round of new ammmunition too. Every one, not just imports. 10% on pistols and revolvers, 11% on rifles, shotguns or ammuntion. http://www.ttb.gov/tax_audit/atftaxes.shtml#Firearms "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 13. I didn't take Dave's course, so this is general info - To echo 'Ski, have your 20 packs done, so you don't have to worry about getting them done during the course. Know your knots. Know the regs. Know how to sew. I don't mean being an accomplished seamstress (tailor, whatever). I mean have a good solid understanding of how the machine makes a stitch, how thread and bobbin tension affect the stitch, how to fill and insert a bobbin and how to sew two pieces of fabric together. This is all stuff you can learn during the class. But it's stuff you can easily learn before, and knowing it in advance gives you more time and opportunity to learn more "rigging" stuff. 14. He had a Colonoscopy and all is well. Men are supposed to have it when they turn 50, so put it on your lists, guys! All adults over 50, not just men. http://www.cancer.org/healthy/findcancerearly/cancerscreeningguidelines/american-cancer-society-guidelines-for-the-early-detection-of-cancer "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 15. It's the same page he was promoting before. http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=4410536;#4410536 But North America seems to work now, although I can't get the map image to load properly. Edit to add: Ok, the map loads, but it takes a long time. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Lucky McSwervy "~ya don't GET old by being weak & stupid!" - Airtwardo
  16. Car transfers have to be recorded with the state too. Cars are registered, require mandatory liability insurance, drivers need to be tested and licensed. Another good model for guns, right? No. Car transfers do not have to be registered, no insurance is required, and licences are not necessary, unless you plan on driving on public roads. I know a guy who has at least a dozen cars. While he has the signed title for all of them, he has not told the state that he has them. The titles havn't been tranferred and no registration or plates have been issued. And has no insurance on them. And his 14 year old grandson has gotten one of them running and drives it around the back field. With no license. And none of that is illegal. 17. Is it possible? Sure. The amendment process allow for it. Don't forget the 18th Amendment which prohibited alcohol, and the 21st which revoked the 18th. But the amendment process is pretty involved. And many states have a "right to keep and bear arms" in their state constitution. Which would make the process a huge, complicated mess. 18. That's cute. Around here, there was an ad for the Daisy Red Ryder BB gun. The "Fun Kit" included BBs, targets and safety glasses. What fun is getting a BB gun if you can't put your eye out?? http://www.farmandfleet.com/products/619969-daisy-red-ryder-shooting-fun-kit.html "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 19. What do you consider a "Skydive Wedding"? Do the cermony on the ground and then go jump? Do the cermony in the plane and jump out after saying "I do"? This has been done a few times, including out of a balloon. Do the cermony and then jump into the reception? The last one isn't really suitable for a solo student, unless the reception is at the DZ. I know a qualified jumper that jumped into the parking lot of the reception facility. After the pictures, when everyone else jumped into the limos and headed to a few bars before going to the reception hall, 4 guys plus the pilot went to the airport and got on the plane. It went very well. They landed just as the rest of the group was arriving. This is a pretty unusual situation, and I don't think you'll find much on the websites. But if you get in touch with them and tell them what you are looking to do, you will find out pretty quickly who is willing to do something. 20. Is it the responsibility of the DZO or the individual jumper to make sure he won't be laying out in a field with 2 broken legs, with nobody knowing about it? A few years back, late on a Sunday afternoon, we were closing up. The pilot was taking the plane to a different airport for maintenance, everyone else was packing up. I did a solo H&P from the "departure flight" and asked someone to hang around until I landed, because I wasn't willing to take the risk of getting hurt on landing with nobody there. It was one of those "Murphy" things where if I was alone, I would have been laying there until the pilot got back, but by asking someone to stay, I had a perfect landing. At a buzy DZ, where a solo could get lost in the shuffle, I can't imagine that there wouldn't be someone willing to be that sort of "Check In" person. But it would be up to the individual jumper to say something like "hey, I'm doing a solo. If I don't check in with you after the load lands, come look for me." 21. You've been here what, a month or two? No matter how far beyond "normal", "acceptable", "polite", or whatever; there is always someone who will take it just a little further. 22. You hear that, girls! She's available!
  23. Granny was 92 years old, and he beat her to death with a hammer. What the hell was he doing out of prison? He did his time. 1st degree manslaughter has a max sentence of 25 years. http://newyorkcriminaldefenseblawg.com/2011/01/understanding-the-basic-differences-between-murder-in-the-second-degree-penal-law-125-25-manslaughter-in-the-first-degree-penal-law-125-20-and-manslaughter-in-the-second-degree-penal-law-125-15/ I'm not saying that I think he should have been out, or that I agree with the sentence or any of that. Just that he's out because his sentence was done. And a lot of states like to release the older prisoners because they represent less of a threat (in theory) and they cost a lot more due to increased medical expenses. 24. Dunno, but I can't find any recent posts using the "search" function. User directory, through the "Who's Online" link. 25. Well, I don't like the idea of the big and strong being able to force the small and weak to do their will. I don't like the idea of large mobs being able to run rampant in the streets with no way to stop them. So I'll keep my guns operational thank you. But I'd like to see those in charge lose their short-sightedness and be able to act with long-term consequences in mind. I'd like to see some willingness to face short term pain and suffering in order to stop a future debacle, not just "band-aid fixes" that make the end result far worse, just a little bit further into the future.
