Summed up: "Prove to me that GZ is innocent!" But that is not how the American system of justice works. The state must prove that he is guilty. If they cannot, he walks, no matter how fishy it feels to you. Nope. The state has to prove GZ guilty. And I don't know if they have enough to do it or not. But Rushmc keeps claiming that the evidence supports GZ's assertion that TM attacked him. And I keep asking what evidence that is. This is what gets me, the poster starts with the above. Seems reasonable......... The follows with........ The area had been robbed - a lot. GZ does follow someone, thats a fact and get's out of the car. Thats a fact. That seems to be all we know. The TM group with say anything GZ says is a self serving lie. It goes to trial what happens if there just isn't any more evideance? You put GZ away because nobody should ever use a gun to defend them selfs?? Did you mean this to be a reply to me? It was probably directed at me, those quotes are my words. So... I don't automatically dismiss GZ's statements as "self-serving lies." But I don't accept them as unvarnished truth either. If you think about it, he would make a statement like he did no matter what actually happened. And I'm certainly not saying that nobody should use a gun for self defense. Nor should they ignore suspicious behavior. But I was taught that use of lethal force for self defense requires that the situation not be initiated by the person claiming self defense. And to never, ever, ever chase anyone. And GZ broke both of those basic rules. He put himself into the situation. Deliberately. A couple of instructors and a lawyer have told me that here in Wisconsin, what GZ did, no matter who started the final fight, would probably have resulted in 2nd degree murder charges. I don't wish to condemn either side. I'm more interested in the truth. What evidence is there that TM attacked GZ? There's evidence of a fight, including witnesses. But the only claims about who attacked whom come from GZ. Who is going to say the TM attacked him no matter what the truth is. And GZ has admitted that he initiated the entire situation, by first following TM with his car, then escalating the situation by getting out of his car and pursuing TM after TM tried to evade GZ by running away. That simple fact, that GZ started the situation and that TM apparently tried to escape the situation, would pretty much negate any claim of self-defense where I live in Wisconsin. Different states have different laws of course. If he tried to escape, he would not have met up with GZ GZ is on a recording saying he lost sight of TM Following someone is not a crime Following does not start anything If you are only being followed and you dont like that, call the cops and keep moving. If you are trying to escape, you do not confront One more time, where is the evidence that "fully supports" GZ's version? How do you know that GZ didn't keep looking after hanging up? Because he says so? And following can be very provocative. Here's an experiment - Find a suspicious looking kid, maybe near a school. Follow him or her with your car, just like GZ did. Do it obviously enough that they see you. And if they run away, get out of your car and follow them on foot. See what happens. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." To me, carrying with a round chambered was more a mental thing than worrying I would have an ND. You're right to think that it will take too much time to chamber a round when you need it. "Excuse me Mr. Badguy, I need a few seconds to rack this thing..." Just keep the booger-hook off the trigger! The Glock will not fire without you pulling the trigger consciously. I'm not saying carry it chambered before you're ready, physically and mentally. But that is part of the game of carrying a weapon. You have to be prepared all around. Just like everything else, opinions vary on this. Although I fully agree that carrying requires being fully prepared, physically and mentally. You have to be "switched on" any time you are dealing with loaded guns (or empty ones for that matter). There was a training fad a few years back, "Israeli technique." Mostly garbage, but it had a few useful things. One of them was effectivly carrying with an empty chamber. It is safer. And if you train for it, racking the slide as you draw the pistol can be accomplished with very little loss of speed. You are already bringing your off side hand up to the pistol as it comes up, it's just a matter of retraining to grab the back of the slide and pull it before you wrap your hand around the grip. And the concept of a "fast draw" is highly over-rated. If you need to draw the gun out that fast, you really messed up. I've heard it said that the fastest draw in the world starts with the gun already in your hand and out of the holster. And that's where a pocket holster really shines. How provocative is is to put your hand on a gun? If it's in a belt or shoulder rig, it's a move that pretty much tells the whole world "I'm going for a gun." But putting your hand in your pocket is perfectly normal. No one (except maybe a cop) will think twice about it. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Nope. He still has his freedom of speech. He can't be arrested or prosecuted for anything he's said. This is a private site. Owned by South Africans, hosted on Canadian servers. (at least it used to be, it may have changed) The rules are pretty clear. And not that hard to follow. Read Quade's first post in the DB Cooper thread for a pretty clear statement on how things go around here. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Ok, I forgot that the Pulse was low bulk. But the question on reserve sizing still stands. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Lucky McSwervy "~ya don't GET old by being weak & stupid!" - Airtwardo

Just out of curiosity, why do you think it would be a good idea to have a reserve 2 sizes smaller than your main? Edit: The bytch beat me by 1 minute. 2nd edit: The Mirage site says an M4 fits a 170 "optimally." So you want to overstuff it by 2 sizes. Again, why do you think this is a good idea? Overstuffing isn't the best practice. It makes it a bitch to pack, and it's pretty hard on the container. Stitches pull out, stiffeners bend and break, grommets pull out. Your nice new H/C wouldn't remain that way for very long. And having that much bulk in the main pack tray can affect the reserve too. Have you asked Mirage? I think it would be a better idea to call them rather than e-mail. You would then be able to hear them laughing in the background when they give you an answer. I'm not too worried. They are really insane by our standards, but they make at least some sense if you think about their position. They seem to do shit like this every so often to get attention. If they don't have some sort of international condemnation every once in a while, they think we don't care. The behavior isn't for our benefit, but geared much more towards their own population. It's easier to keep control over the huddled, starving masses if you can say "look, the US, Japan and China are all scared of us, we are important." They know perfectly well that if they flip a nuke at us, Pyongyang is a glowing, smoking, crater. It isn't any fun to rule over a country that is a glowing wasteland, with a population that is dead or dying. Nerdgirl posts on Facebook quite a bit. If she tosses anything interesting up, I'll link it. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Lucky McSwervy "~ya don't GET old by being weak & stupid!" - Airtwardo

Yes, I do. What would you like to know? Well, it says "Main 170sq ft." What size reserve? What size container (IOW, what size main and reserve were supposed to be in there)? Well... I said in the thread about carry guns that the best gun for you is the one you like best. This is even more true for holsters (and placement of them). Body shape plays a part, so does your flexibility. The type of gun and it's size, the clothes you wear, and the position you spend the most time in all factor in. And everything is a tradeoff. Speed, comfort, concealability Personally, I don't like the "retention gimmick" holsters for civilian carry. For a cop, who is carrying open, who has to interact very closely with (and often ends up wresting with) less than wonderful segments of the population, that extra retention can be valuable. For the average civilan, it breeds complacency. Preventing take aways is more in how you behave than how your gun is secured. Don't let unknown people close in on your "gun side", keep an elbow down over the gun when someone is close, that sort of thing. Because anyone who has worked with the holster can get the gun out without any difficulties. I had a guy at the range showing off his Serpa to me, telling me how secure it was (and this was the one with the hood over the back of the slide too). He let me get close enough that I grabbed his wrist with my left hand, yanked it forward and used my right hand to draw the gun out (I was standing facing him, just behind his right hip, perfect snatch position). Crossdraw can be useful, but it's harder to hide, and you have to practice your draw motion a lot to make sure you don't sweep the muzzle across your weak arm while getting the gun out. There are numerous cases of a cross draw resulting in the person putting a bullet into their own elbow (shoulder holsters have the same issue). Personally, I prefer behind the strong hip (FBI style). It is fairly fast, very comfortable most of the time, fairly secure (it's behind my body, so anyone in front of me has a hard time getting it) and very well hidden unless I bend way over. With and inside-the-waistband rig, I can get away with just a loose t-shirt. But I can't wear a "button up" shirt that's tucked in. And behind the back doesn't work very well on my motorcycle (crotch rocket) or bicycle because I'm bent forward. Different solutions for different situations. One of the more amusing sights I've seen out on the road was a guy carrying a 1911 on a crotch rocket. He had it behind the hip, IWB, covered (he thought) by a t shirt. But the shirt had blown up the way they do on those sorts of bikes, and the grips of the gun were sticking out of his pants. And concealablity seems to be more dependent on the thickness of the gun than the height or length. I've seen full size Government 45s disappear very nicely with the right holster, clothes and body type. But most double stacks (even the "Baby Glocks") are harder to hide because the grip is so wide. But how well hidden it needs to be often depends on where you are. There are places where I don't care if anyone knows it's there. There are others where I really, really don't want to advertise. And I choose what, how and where (and even "if") I carry accordingly "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Rules in the US are a bit different. More than 60 days since the last jump for an A license requires "at least one jump under the supervision of a currently rated USPA instructional rating holder until demonstrating altitude awareness, freefall control on all axes, tracking, and canopy skills sufficient for safely jumping in groups." SIM 5.2 The instructors at her DZ will be the best to judge exactly what she needs to do to get back up. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." There's also the "bug factor." Without the severe cold spells in the winter, a lot more bugs survive. There's a type of beetle that is killing off a lot of trees in the northern Rockies. It's thriving because the periodic -30F temps that kill it off are becoming rarer. All that deadwood is making fire season much, much more interesting. It also takes a lot of practice to use them safely, especially for landing. And besides, half the fun of night jumps is the fact that it's dark. Using NVG would take that away. Most people think that. Until the moment of truth occurs. The human mind is an odd thing. Yes. Some react better than they would have thought, many more react worse. It's the same as combat (real, life-or-death situations). It's known in some circles as "Seeing the Elephant." It's a reference to hunting an animal that will charge at you and stomp you into mush if you miss your target or don't make the follow up shot in time. And it's said that once you've been there, you will be much, much better at it. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." I believe they excuse it by calling it 'American English' old boy. And we thank you for developing the beta version. You may now thank us for refining the product into something usable. Don't forget that there are a lot of other people who use English. Not just the US and Britain. Mostly the fact that far, far too many of us behave like spoiled three year olds (maybe not even that mature). Selfish, short sighted, acting without thought for the consequences, acting without any thought of how it might affect others. Most of the things on your list can be attributed to it. Both public and private debt, healthcare and obseity, the environment, all that. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Question about coming back from a long spot
wolfriverjoe replied to Deimian's topic in Safety and Training
That's true. I tend to be extra conservative under unusual circumstances. If the situation is not normal, I like an extra margin for error, because I know errors are more likely. And I learned "emergency landing" concepts in a plane a long time (longer than I care to admit) before I ever even saw a sport parachute. The power lines and fences tend to be harder to see in time from an airplane than under canopy, and last second changes in plan are a lot easier under canopy. So maybe the "middle of a huge field" is an over-reaction, or continuing on from what I was taught in my FJC. Or maybe a little lack of confidence in my accuracy under odd circumstaces. Question about coming back from a long spot
wolfriverjoe replied to Deimian's topic in Safety and Training
Wow. It's pretty rare that I disagree with you, but I certainly do here. Roads usually have powerlines, ditches, fences, mailboxes, culverts (driveways that go over the ditch), not to mention cars. They are a bad place to try and land anywhere near (the cars and especially big trucks push a lot of air when they go past, nasty turbulence). I was taught to avoid any straight lines. Field edges, road sides, even boundaries between two fields. They often have the above mentioned obstacles. The ideal off landing area is a hayfield or empty pasture. Right in the middle. Uncultivated fields are also good, but beware the furrows, I've known ankles to be broken landing in a plowed field. Cultivated fields aren't the best. The farmers tend to get annoyed when their livelyhood gets damaged (we used to have a "field fund" - out landers tossed a buck in each time, the money was given to the farmer at the end of the year). And landing in crops has it's hazards. Beans grab ankles, wheat can make height judgement difficult and corn... Hurts. Occupied pastures are bad news too. Aside from "landmines", you don't know the temperament of the "occupants." Horses tend to spook, cows tend to be curious, and if it's a big open field with only one occupant, don't land there (think about why he's alone and that it might be because he doesn't get along with others well). It's not that hard to pick good "out landing" areas. In a 182 there's plenty of time to look around and see what's open, and what's in it. Spotting the different types of fields from the air takes a bit of practice, but anyone who's jumped for a while can help pick stuff out. Or you can try to guess what's in each field near a road, and then go see if you were right. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit."
