  1. Video is now "Private." Go figure. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Lucky McSwervy "~ya don't GET old by being weak & stupid!" - Airtwardo
  2. The wars are long over? Really? You mean like in the Balkans? "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Lucky McSwervy "~ya don't GET old by being weak & stupid!" - Airtwardo
  3. Three? Luxury! When I got into an argument at the DZ I was facing a platoon of infantry, five tanks, two helicopter gunships and had an aircraft carrier dropped on my head. And I bet they made you live in a shoebox at the bottom of a lake, and eat gravel. You got gravel to eat? Wow, we only got that if we were extra good. 4. Of course she's in on it. They're ALL in on it. Everyone who says that it isn't true is in on it. Even you. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Lucky McSwervy "~ya don't GET old by being weak & stupid!" - Airtwardo
  5. Ok, if you don't want to hear "Don't do it", then good luck. Bylaws don't have to be skydiving specific. But they need to cover everything. Membership, including joining (buy in costs and procedures), staying a member, quitting, getting kicked out (unpleasant but sometimes necessary). Duties and responsibilities, how much work members have to do, who has to do what, who is allowed to do what (who gets keys to the hangar), all that. Make sure there's a clause in there about dissolving the club. You hope you won't need it, but if you do, you really need it. Get a good waiver. It will cost, but it's very important. Ask other DZs in your area who wrote theirs. The same lawyer may be able to help with the bylaws. You will need a large group of people willing to work. And I'm not talking about the "fun" part. I mean cleaning the toilets, picking up the garbage at the end of the day, sitting inside in the manifest office on the most beautiful days of the season. It's a lot of work, and people will burn out. I've been part of a club that went from 50+ down to less than 10, and we closed our doors 2 years ago But it was a lot of fun, and I don't regret any of the work I put in (and it was a hell of a lot). There's a certain "pride of ownership" that is there. Here's a couple of threads I found in a quick search: http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=2152446;search_string=bylaws%20club%20DZ;#2152446 http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=4366109;search_string=bylaws%20club%20DZ;#4366109 "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 6. But he doesn't have to actually be in the US to do that, right? He could do all of his training, all of his jumps, complete the card and everything at one of the USPA DZs in Germany (see councilman24's post) and have a valid USPA A licence, couldn't he? 7. No. Are you suggesting every person who works as a range officer should be a sworn law enforcement officer? I volunteer as a range officer. Anything that is obviously illegal is questioned (short barrelled and silencers) and if the shooter doesn't have the proper paperwork, they are asked put it away. But are you expecting me to run every gun through a database (that doesn't currently exist, nor do I have any means to access one)? And just how, exactly, am I supposed to determine if a magazine is a post-ban homemade version or a pre-ban legal version? "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 8. We are. Everyone considers themselves "middle class," except possibly the very rich. And they consider themselves "upper-middle class." Really. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Lucky McSwervy "~ya don't GET old by being weak & stupid!" - Airtwardo
  9. Cho was the Virginia Tech shooter. Laughner was listed in the version that I found on Snopes, which was almost identical. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Lucky McSwervy "~ya don't GET old by being weak & stupid!" - Airtwardo
  10. ...aaaand THAT'S when the fight started.. Well, I didn't say that it would be the outcome that he wanted. If she looks at him, says "Yeah, right" and leaves, then he still won't have to answer the question, now will he? And it's going to be pretty hard for him to take away her shoes if one of them is planted deeply up his ass. Although it would be pretty fun to hear how he explains that one to the ER nurse. 11. I don't see any way for it to really be enforced without mandatory registration. Which failed pretty badly in Canada. I wouldn't have a problem with a requirement for background checks if: A - it was easy and not too expensive. B - it didn't involve registration. One option that seems to be workable would be a firearms buyer ID of some sort. Simply proof that the person is legal to purchase a firearm. A carry permit seems to do that, and allows purchasers to bypass the B/C and wait period in some places. Rushmc has said that Iowa has that. But without universal registration, it would be pretty toothless. There wouldn't be any way to ensure that a B/C took place because there wouldn't be any record of transfers. And regsistration simply won't fly. Too much opposition by too many for too many valid reasons. Professor Kallend has proposed nationwide registration with severe penalties for failure, and registration checks at any firing range. This proposal is ludicrous for several reasons, the most obvious is that anyone who isn't legally able to own a firearm cannot be prosecuted for failing to register it. And there are millions (tens of millions?) of guns out there with no paper trail beyond the manufacturer's sale records. No record of sale was required before GCA '68. And if the gun hasn't gone through a FFL holder since then, it simply has no paper trail. I know people that have fairly extensive collections that are entirely "paperless" guns. They have gone to a fair amount of trouble to make sure that everything they have is pre-68 originally and hasn't been through an FFL since. And FWIW, the guy in the OP link was a dumbass. He clearly failed to follow most of the basic rules of gun safety. Gun shows around here now require all guns to be checked as empty and zip-tied to prevent the action from being moved before entering the facility. You can't even open a bolt to check the bore or anything. It looks like that was what happened here. It was loaded in the case, and the idiot had his finger in the trigger when he pulled it out to check it in. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 12. Why is Chuck Norris pretending to be a Texan SOS member? It's not Chuck Norris, it's Robert Redford as Jeremiah Johnson. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Lucky McSwervy "~ya don't GET old by being weak & stupid!" - Airtwardo
  13. Well, what's inside is the most important, but I have to admit that unwrapping the present is also a lot of fun. And pretty "wrapping" makes that even better. 14. A quick search found a discussion thread on Snopes. Seems to be at least partly false. Laughner was a registered independent. Cho was a green card alien, not eligible to be a registered anything. http://message.snopes.com/showthread.php?p=1705071 I've found that the vast majority of those "authoritative" e-mail chain letters are at least partly false. 15. What's so astonishing? Cho, Loughner and Holmes all purchased their weapons through FFL dealers and passed the current background checks (Cho shouldn't have, but that's a different issue). And I've heard that Lanza could have passed the checks, but was afraid that his mom was going to have him institutionalized and didn't want to wait the 14 days. So he would have if he had been willing to wait. So all these "lunatics" passed the current checks. It isn't all that farfetched that the sheep want to find out some way of keeping guns out of the hands of people who are going to do bad things with them. 16. Doubtful. But would the rental company be willing to throw snows on at the bottom of I-25 and take them off again in Missouri? And does anyone rent chains? I carry them with me when I go west in the winter, but I try very hard not to use them. I won't go into an area that I know will need chains, I'll park and wait it out if at all possible. 17. There's nothing wrong with setting these sorts of goals. It's better to do that than to "just jump", with no idea what you want to do. But... Point 1 - Make sure you don't focus so hard on the goals that you forget to enjoy the journey. There may well be a few twists and turns along the way. You may decide to change your goals at some point. Don't be so fixed on your current goals that you ignore all the other options out there. Point 2 - Don't focus so hard on the jump numbers, make sure you develop the skills you need to safely advance. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 19. You stand up like a man and say "Woman, I make the money, I decide how to spend the money! Now go in the kitchen, make me a sammich and bring me a beer!!" It will solve your problem. One way or another, you won't have to answer the question again. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 20. Note: This is a serious reply. I drive for a living. The only part that would be of serious concern would be the B to D segment. I have little experience on I-25, but I've run I-80 from Salt Lake City east a number of times in the winter. They don't salt in Wyoming, so icy conditions are routine. Wind and snow can shut the road down for a few days at a time. Wrecks due to wind, snow and poor visibility will do it too. The truck stops are reasonably nice, and they will let you sleep in the TV lounge if the hotels are full. I have a truck I can sleep in, but I've seen them explain to hapless travellers in cars that the road is closed, and they can't go anywhere. They have a rather interesting phenomenon called a "ground blizzard" where the skies are clear and blue, but there are winds of 30-50 mph (45-80 kmh for you Squeak) that blow the snow around and visibility drops to 1/4 mile or less (400 meters or so). The wind can be very scary. I've seen campers and empty semis blow over. I've personally driven a heavy load in 40 mph sustained winds and had to hold almost a quarter turn of the steering wheel to keep straight. But it can also be clear, calm and absolutely gorgeous. It's perfectly doable, just pay close attention to the weather, know your limits for what you can drive in, and be prepared to stop and sit out bad weather if you have to. The rest of the northern section of the route should be ok, although again, it's possible that a storm would make travel hazardous, and make finding a safe place to wait out the weather a good idea. As has been said, the highway crews do a really good job of clearing the major roads after the storms. They also do a pretty good job of closing them if it's advised. Outside of the mountains, I've never had to sit more than a day while the storm did it's thing. Within a few hours of the snow stopping, the roads are safe to travel with caution. The ice storms in the central states (roughly the I-70 corridor) can be really bad, but again, they don't present a long-lasting hazard. Wait it out and you are fine. 21. Actually that is a very good point. This completely (and maybe intentionally) misses the point. The "militia" is not intended to fight against the US Armed Forces for the purpose of revolution against the United States (We the People).. So where does all this defense against a tyrranical government rhetoric come from, then, enquiring minds want to know? Maybe Thomas Jefferson? And not everyone who believes in an armed populace thinks we should have an ever larger military having bigger and better weapons. Some think just the opposite. 22. site-wide, or just this forum? When is he coming back? Well, considering that he got slapped down for creating sock puppets, I'm gonna guess that it is site-wide and permanent, regardless of what it was originally. http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=4409037#4409037 "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 23. Really? I've taken two (Minnesota and Wisconsin). Both were very heavy on rules, laws and procdeures. Both had basic safety covered, and a qualifier shoot at the range (again, very basic). This is the organization that wrote the both the classes I took. http://www.ahlmans.com/aacfi.html "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 24. Yup. In that sort of situation, the cops are not on your side. I was taught not to alter the scene in any way. Destroying or fabricating evidence is a crime. What I was taught to say: "Officer, that person attacked me." "There is the evidence." Point to any evidence of the attack. His weapon, scuffle marks, collateral damage, any witnesses to the attack. "I will sign a complaint against him." "I will make a statement at the proper time, under the proper circumstances. Right now, I am very upset and I wish to talk to my lawyer before saying anything more." And then SHUT UP. Remember that a cop involved in a shooting is not interviewed about it for a couple of days (48-72 hours, depending on the rules) and that interview takes place with a police union lawyer present. 25. I always preferred the incendiares. Stuff that went KABOOM!!!! tended to bring unwanted attention. Lighting a bonfire in a spectacular way usually didn't attract as much.
