Okay, that makes sense. WI has some pretty good rules as far as disclosure on this sort of thing. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Lucky McSwervy "~ya don't GET old by being weak & stupid!" - Airtwardo

That was the problem. The "researchers" at the CDC had already demonstrated a bias against guns. One of them was on the board of directors at the Brady group. You have to rememeber the political climate in 93-94. The anti gun crowd was on a roll. They had passed the Brady bill and the AWB. They thought they had the NRA on the ropes. They publically stated their 3 pronged attack: Legislative, litigative, and medical. They had "Brady 2" all set to go. They had announced their plans to sue the gun manufacturers into bankruptcy and out of business. And they clearly stated that they had doctors who would "find" that guns were a health risk. They announced the outcome of the research before the research actually took place. Most gun owners were caught by surprise when the AWB passed. NRA membership soared, the Rs took both houses of congress, and the anti gunner's plans were derailed. All the proposed gun control legislation was scrapped, the so-called research was blocked and, although it took several years and the gun makers had to pay a shitload of money fighting the frivilous lawsuits (none of which made it very far), laws preventing those kinds of lawsuits passed. It depends on the state laws. Read the above post about GA law. In WI, you can register and drive a car with a salvage title, but don't plan on getting any money if you get into an accident. The insurance company will say something like "That car has already been written off and we paid the owner full value for it." And they won't pay a second time. The car may be perfectly safe, it's just that the repair costs exceeded the value of the car, so the insurance company wrote the car off. There are ways to get the "Salvage" brand off the title, check your local DMV if you care (I get the feeling you don't care all that much). No, it was the Seahawks that cheated a win (well, the refs anyway). The 'Niner's beat them fair and square, both times. The Packers didn't help themselves in the playoff game by turning the ball over when and how they did. And it was rather depressing to see how effectively the Falcons were able to contain Kaepernick. Event though they lost the game, Kaepernick was far, far less productive than against the Packers. And I am a Packers fan. I have been for a long, long time. Ask and you shall receive. From the "Join the Military" website: http://www.military.com/join-armed-forces/army-weight-rules.html And it's interesting that GM's hypothetical "265 lb male soldier" couldn't enlist. The max height listed is 80" (6'8") and max weight is 250#. That doesn't mean a soldier couldn't weigh 265 and still stay in, but he couldn't join at that weight. Such as? And why in the world would anyone not want to improve their chances? And how do you define "need" that covers all situations. That's just crazy. Ok - so you wear kevlar regularly? Nope...what does that have to do with wanting to or needing to? You evaded that one question and didn't address the others. Sorry- missed this question in the thread myself! Err - put yourself intentionally in harms way? I didn't evade anything. You asked for an example of something a regular guy doesn't want to or need to be able to do and I gave you one... I know a couple of civilians who wear kevlar on a daily basis. One is a cab driver. The other is a jewlery shop owner. Both have been robbed at gunpoint. Both have decided that the hassle and discomfort of wearing body armor are worth the protection it gives. And while I wouldn't consider what the cab driver does as "intentionally putting himself into harms way," he does go to somewhat sketchy areas and pick up somewhat questionable people. Not replying to you directly, more of a general statement. I've never understood the "200 lbs of stupid" comment. I hear it occasionally, but it always puzzles me. I'd have to check my numbers, but I think I've made 4000 tandem jumps, not a huge number by today's standards, but enough to be able to evaluate things I believe. I'm gonna guess I have made those jumps in probably 8-10 different countries over the last decade, and I can't think of a single instance of looking down and seeing "stupid" hanging off of me under canopy. I guess my point is, if I have one, it's that our students are only as smart or "stupid" as we train them to be. If I were ever to look down and see "200 lbs of stupid" hanging off me, I would consider it a failure on my part, not theirs. As an industry, we must remain vigilant in training our students to the best of our ability, otherwise someday we may collectively lose the privilege of doing so. I know some TIs use that phrase as a joke, but there are those out there that genuinely believe it. Tandem skydiving is a serious business, a training business, and at it's core, it is a responsibility business.......we are in the business of acting responsibly. That responsibility starts with treating every student we work with as thought they are the most important person in our lives and training them accordingly, because for that period of time that we re with them, they are the most important person in our lives. FWIW, I agree with you on that. I would never belittle a student by calling them stupid. And my old DZ did a pretty good job for the most part in treating them like "real" students. Explaining what was happening, the gear, all that. It made them feel a lot more involved, like students instead of passengers. The word "Stupid" is in there because putting in "200 pounds of ignorance and inexperience in an environment that is totally unlike anything they have ever experienced and is extremely stressful and frightening; all of which combines to cause them to sometimes do the most amazingly dangerous things at the worst possible time" is a little unwieldy And I gotta say it: Bill Booth liked what I had to say! He likes me, he really likes me!!! WOO HOO!!!!! That made my day!

It sure seems that way. I don't have any serious studies or proof, but I do know that there are a lot more members at the shooting range I am a part of. Some of that is due to the overall decline in shooting ranges, but I know a lot of the new members are new gun owners. They say "This is the first gun I've owned, can you help me with it." Considering that far, far more kids die from prescription drugs (pain pills mostly) than from guns, should they find out which students have easy(ier) acces to those? You're absolutely right. I regularly see stories of kids coming into school and wiping out a handful of their classmates with their parents Oxycodone... It happens more often than you might think. Prescription drug deaths are way, way up. Especially among kids. http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2012/10/121016092848.htm "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." People that know nothing about assault weapons
wolfriverjoe replied to fpritchett64's topic in Speakers Corner
Nope. You are making the same mistake that so many do. An assault rifle is a specific and technical term describing a select fire (capable of full automatic fire) rifle shooting a mid-range caliber cartridge. An assault weapon is a political term originated by journalists, but popularized by politicians looking for a "boogeyman". It's a military style semi-auto rifle. Some are based on real assault rifles (AR-15 based on M-16, AK-47) some are based on sub-machine guns (Uzi) some are based on Battle rifles (M1A based on M-14, FAL, H&K91) - Battle rifles are full power caliber, usually 308 (7.62x51) for NATO countries. The chief quoted in the OP clearly implies that these guns are too powerful and destructive for hunting. "Nothing left to eat" pretty much says "too damaging," which is a bunch of garbage. The mid-caliber cartridges of "real" assault rifles are marginal for deer sized game. Most "deer rifles" are full power callibers. 30-06 is very popular, .308 (a descendant of the 30-06) is too. They aren't too powerful or too destructive for hunting. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Lucky McSwervy "~ya don't GET old by being weak & stupid!" - Airtwardo -

Yes, I'm saying that the standards for CCW in many states are very low. The idea that there is no substantial difference between a typical CCW holder and a typical off-duty cop, as implied by at least one poster in this thread, is ludicrous. Well, the training standard for cops isn't all that great either. I've watched them train, and seen them shoot. Don't kid yourself that they are "experts" with guns (some are, but not most). The recent NYC shooting, and the Diallo shooting several years back are far more indiciative of their skill level. Police training stadards are better than what's required for CCW, but a lot of permit holders are far better than you seem to think. The ones that are disciplined enough to carry regularly also are disciplined enough to practice regularly. Admittedly, my sample isn't random, but the guys that I know that carry regularly are pretty good with their pistols. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." It ended up being only $2k (only!). http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/09/12/us-tennis-open-williams-fine-idUSTRE78B62Y20110912 And that was for blowing up at an official. The article talks about her previous incidents that have landed her on probation and gotten her fined. All she did here was destroy a racket. That was probably given to her in the first place (although it probably retails for quite a bit). And yeah, she acts like a spoiled little kid throwing a tantrum on a pretty regular basis. I don't know about that. None of the people I know who made a visit to the orthopedic surgeon are dead or disabled and only one made a return visit. Lesee.. one, two, three, four, five died from bad judgement without a surgical intervention before then. I prefer when jumpers who listen and learn from other peoples' mistakes, but when they don't I hope for enough of an injury to be a learning experience with no permanent damage because things are likely to be much worse later in their career at a higher wing loading. Good point. Although I personally know one who has yet to learn, despite 2 serious incidents. Billvon has said something to the effect of: "I hope you femur. Not because I want to see you get hurt, but because it's a serious enough injury to wake you up and one that usually heals without permanent disablity." I'd still rather Mr "MadSkilz" learned the easier way. But that is up to him. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." It's the Bonfire. Just about everything ends up getting sick and perverted. But nothing is as weird, sick and twisted as BV's thread. And you may not realize it, but there's a lot of stuff that the mods have deleted. Heh. Another sweet and innocent one that needs indoctrination. Well, there are a bunch of wingnuts that actually believe that garbage. This crap too: http://www.answersingenesis.org/ Fortunately, they are a small, but very vocal and active minority. Edit to add: It was already in SC when I replied, Turtle. Nothing to do with the "liberal agenda," the way most of the 'true believers' argue with the scientists is what put SC here in the first place. and which Balkanic AND European country was at war ? I was under the impression that the Balkan region (former Yugoslavia) was in Europe. That they are European countries. And they were at war less than 20 years ago. I'm not sure how that would qualify as "long over." I don't think that the democracies of Western Europe are likely to go to war with each other again. But didn't Russia invade Georgia in 2008? Again, isn't that Europe? And how is 5 years ago "long over." "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Wow. I have to say that you have guts to show up here. The "vultures" can be pretty harsh. But you have to realize there are valid reasons for that level of anger. Search "Bob Holler" and "Danny Page" to find out what has happened doing what you did in the pattern. Search "Sangi" to find out what has happened to someone just like you. On a 129 Safire, no less. And the video didn't show "suspended" when I looked this morning, it was "private." There's a difference. But I'm glad to hear that you were willing to listen to your friends and are going to stop the stupidity. Really, I am. Nobody wants to see you get hurt. It's just that there have been a lot of "youse" (if that's a word) that have come and gone. Some learned before they got hurt, some learned after they got hurt (with varying levels of permanent injury and disablity) and some had about 3 seconds of life left to realize how serious their error was.
