  1. Nice. Although he and I aren't identical, I fully agree with his points. I've voted mostly "R" for a long time, until this year. I tolerated the positions that I disagreed with because there were enough that I did agree with, or becuase I disagreed with the "D" candidate more. But not this time. Science, fiscal issues, social issues and health care. The Rs are so far removed from my world that I simply couldn't vote for them. And I know I'm not alone. 2. I'm not entirely sure about that. Obama's voting history, both as an Illinois state senator and as the US Senator from Illinois was 100% anti-gun. He stated during the debates that he'd like to see the AWB reinstated. While I don't see any real chance of the government coming and taking away anyones guns, I do see the potential for certain types or classes of guns falling under a "new manufacture" ban. Which would freeze availability at whatever number is out there now (which is pretty high), and drive prices up (again). I don't really see this happening, because even though Obama doesn't have to worry about re-election, the senators and congress-critters that would have to pass a new law would. And most of them remember very well the elections in '96. Personally, I'm going to stock up on primers and powder. Not because I fear the government making it unavailable, but because I remember '08 when everyone panicked and bought up everything on the shelves. Primer cost went through the roof, and that was when you could find them. Besides, I'm getting low and I usually buy a couple sleeves at a time to get a bulk discount. 3. Ummm... You haven't been to a boogie before, have you? Weird dancing, fires, other "shenanigans"... Sometimes the whuffos disappear. I haven't seen any sacrificed to the weather gods, but I usually go to bed fairly early. Seriously, have fun, but be careful. It's really easy to get tempted into doing stuff beyond your skills and taking extra risks. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 4. Nice. Not quite as good as the topless women shilling washing machines, but pretty good. I was actually expecting the "Georgia State Cat Chasing Championships" again. 5. Piecing together a rig is often the only option if you want something "non-standard" (big canopies for a small person fit that). Finding a H/C that fits both you and the canopies may present a challenge. There is then the option of a harness resize. If you find a H/C you think is workable, get the serial number from the seller. Send that and your measurements to the manufacturer and see if they can resize it to fit you and how much it will cost. You can find out how to get the measurments from the mfg's website. Follow the directions closely and have someone else take the measurements. You can't do it accurately yourself. And yes, we will laugh at you for just about everything. But if you have a rig that fits you and your needs, just look at the 'laughers' and ask who's on the next load. 6. Well, it has directions that seem real, including pics of the gate to use and the request to not bother the neighbors. And it isn't listed on the "ripoff" site that jumpdude has up: http://1800skyrideripoff.com/ My guess would be that it's a tandem mill. Real DZ but not really a place to get trained and licensed. But I could be wrong. To the OP: If you are in the LA area, Perris and Elsinore are great places. Real DZs that have solid training and a desire to see you succeed. I'd try them first. 7. Do you have a web link for Coastal? It's not listed on here (the bottom link Pops put up). Not being on here doesn't mean that it doesn't exist or that it isn't any good, but it is not a good sign. Listing on here is free and easy. There's no reason not to do it that I know of. 8. I'm not missing anything, its all in how you look at what you want. He has acutally 2 choices that he wants. He was for: 1, Johnson, but if Johnson failed he was satisfied with OBAMA. A vote for Johnson would not have produced a favorable vote for Romney that an exact vote for Romney would have produced. They talked alot about this, that Johnson pulled votes away from Romney. Now in the case of "I don't want OBAMA to continue" there is only one choice--Romney. As a vote for Johnson to get Romney wouldn't make any sense. He said if he didn't vote for Johnson he would have voted for OBAMA. You can want something but when it is nearly impossible to get it, you bet next best choice and he did that. I know he wanted Johnson, but lets face it, that wasn't going to happen. A vote for Johnson helped OBAMA win. You're missing the line of reasoning that goes "I don't want either of them." Personally, I haven't voted for a presidential candidate in a long time. This time I would have voted against Obama, had Romney and the Republican party been a palatable choice. But their behavior was so repugnant to me (both the party as a whole and Romney as an individual) that I couldn't "plug my nose, hold my breath" and cast a vote for Romney. 9. As was said, it's an AFF category "D". It's all described in the USPA SIM "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Lucky McSwervy "~ya don't GET old by being weak & stupid!" - Airtwardo
  10. I think Honey-boo-boo has already had WAY too many nuggets WTF is a Honey-boo-boo? You know, I've heard that name a bunch of times recently. I didn't know who it was, I didn't want to know who it was. I suspected (correctly as it turns out) that it was some sort of "reality TV star" on some idiotic show. If you click on the link, you will find out who "Honey Boo Boo" is. I wouldn't do that if I were you, but it's your choice. And PETA hasn't lost it in the least. They are getting publicity out of it. Lots and lots of free publicity. Even here, on dorkzone. They have a brand, and they market it very, very shrewdly. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 11. Strong Tandems have a split bag with velcro. A lot of them end up getting sewn shut. If you search around a bit you can find the discussion of the pros and cons of the idea. It does make getting the bag around the canopy easier, but velcro is a very high maintenance item. Plan on replacing the pile side of the velcro pretty frequently. Proper technique, lots of practice, and a canopy that isn't new make bagging a lot easier. I'd ask the maker of the H/C about them first. 12. Congrats on the jump! And keep in mind that if you aren't afraid then there's something wrong with you or you don't understand what you are doing. And you aren't the only one to ride the plane down. 13. Clicky fixed. Yeah, if you read the scam forum, this is a new tactic. Copy a real ad and repost it. Check the seller out before you send any money. Should be standard practice. 15. And the DOM? (Date of Manufacture) One thought: The bigger gear stores sell stuff on consignment. They inspect it, set the price, put it up for sale and sell it. Obviously, they take a cut of the money, but for someone who doesn't know much about the gear, or doesn't want the hassle of dealing with the sale, it's an option. Chutingstar and Square one are the first that come to mind. There are others. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 16. No. Disliking Obama doesn't automatically make one a racist. I don't like Obama. I don't like his SC choices. I don't like his stance on guns (the real one based on his history, not the one he claims in TV ads). I don't like how he decided to do whatever he could to go around Congress instead of working with them (not that it would have been easy, but Clinton did it). But he's not Kenyan. He's not a Muslim. He's not a socialist. And it seems to me that he is getting a lot more criticism on these imaginary issues than previous Presidents. And it seems that a lot of those who are focusing on those imaginary issues say a lot of other things about other issues that have strong overtones of racism. 17. Yea but theres bugger all chance of a black man leading the country anytime soon. You know, that seems to be the "elephant in the room." Nobody who is really opposed to Obama is willing to admit that what they really hate is that he's black. And while there may be some who are actually opposed to his policies and political positions, Clinton had most of the same positions, but didn't get anywhere near the vitroil, particularly the "Socialist" label, when he tried national health care. You even see it on here. Some of the most vocal against Obama, while not admitting that their hatred of him is racial, also post comments that very strongly suggest a prejudice against blacks. 18. Because they're private, not public, employers. That means that if it's in an "employment at will" state (most states are), employers can hire or fire any non-contract employee at any time for any reason (as long as the action does not violate some other law, such as, for one example, anti-discrimination laws.) In states (again: most) where that's the case, the only thing that would stop (and not just discourage) employers from maintaining such a practice and policy would be a specific provision of law. Generally, yes. In fact, in most employment-at-will states, that's already the case. I'm not saying that that's commonplace - we all know that it's not - but more often than not it would be legal. Not in Wisconsin. A while back (maybe 15 years or so) the courts ruled against having a written policy forbidding any legal activity. There were a lot of companies that wouldn't hire smokers (tobacco) and would test for it before hiring. It went to court and the smokers won. I can't quote cases or anything, but I worked for a company that tried to have this kind of policy. It wasn't part of the suit, but dropped the policy after the court decision. 19. It's not that simple. Getting a rigger ticket is a pretty serious investment in both time and money. And the packing jobs are among the most coveted at the DZ. You aren't going to just walk onto the DZ and start packing, even with a rigger ticket. Less costly? Buy a tent and learn to like Ramen. 21. Not really. I can make (manufacture) a gun for my own use. I don't even need to put a serial number on it. SELLING it would be an entirely different situation. I'm not sure I could give it away or even leave it as an inheritance. But I can make it as long as it's in compliance with the other laws (barrel length on a rifle, not full auto, ect.) And there's no controls on the sale of short barreled uppers. They are considered "just parts." However, if you have a standard rifle lower and don't have a pistol or registered short barrel lower, having a short upper would be illegal. The same thing goes for having full auto parts (hammer, sear, auto safety sear, ect.) and having a non-registered receiver without having a registered one. 22. There are "Low Flying Airplanes Cross Here" on the highway at both my current and former DZs. The end of the runway is close enough that the plane is pretty low as it crosses for landing. Maybe 25-50' up. And I have quite a few takeoffs and landings out of another local airport, Brennand in Neenah (79C). The standard procedure was to check the road for traffic on short final. I had a go-around once because of a tractor pulling a hay wagon, and another instructor actually hit a dump truck. We never did quite figure out how he missed seeing it. YouTube of landing there. You can see how close the end of the runway is to the road. I was there before they put in the pavement and the displaced threshold. We used to aim to touch down right about where the pavement starts. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CFghlV-HjfA "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 23. Yup. A friend's daughter was complaining that she needed a new backpack. Her old one had blown a seam and she didn't want to give it up. It had a lot of pockets and she had a place for everything. I asked to take a look, and it was just the thread in the seam, the fabric was fine. When I said that it would take me longer to set up the sewing machine than it would to actually fix it, she looked at me in shock - "You have a sewing machine?" I replied, of course - "No, I have three sewing machines." She was grateful that I could fix it. 24. #1 - It is covered in detail during the FJC. Really. They should cover everything you need to know. If they don't, ask questions. If you don't understand something, keep asking until you do. #2 - It isn't all that hard. You have 2 controls. A left toggle and a right toggle. Left turns are accomplished by pulling... (wait for it)... the left toggle. I'll leave it to you to figure out how to make a right turn, Flaring and slow flight is accomplished by pulling both. You will be pulling fairly high (5000 or so) at first. Plenty of time to practice. You also will have a radio, with an instructor advising you what to do and when. You will also be on a very large student canopy. If you are foolish enough to buy your own rig before jumping, you most likely won't be allowed to jump it (I saw the other thread you started). Student canopies are large, slow, predictable and forgiving of most errors. I've seen students flare about 25' up and sink in, I've seen no flares, I've seen half to three quarter flars held from about 50' up all the way down. None of those landings were very pretty, but none of them resulted in injuries. I have seen a too high flare that was fully released too close to the ground. The canopy surged, the jumper pendulumned back and the canopy dove towards the ground. The student had the wind knocked out of him and some bumps and bruises. And the radio instructor had to change his shorts. Remi's right. Don't try to learn the FJC here. All you'll do is piss off your instructors. There's lots of silly, fun stuff in the Bonfire.
