Not working for me. As the page loads, first the plain page loads, then the top banner ad jumps in, making it hop down a little, then the facebook thing pops in, making it jump down again. The most frustrating part about this is it varies in time, but always seems to make the page jump just as I'm clicking. The second most frustrating part is that it makes the page jump one line, so the thread I want to click on jumps and the one above it is the one I actually click on. I don't want to disable the ads. I'm not a premium member, so I will click on the occasional ad to generate a bit of revenue for the sight (Blatant suck-up). Edit to add: This is fairly new. It never used to do this. Just my $0.02 - At my old DZ, the waiver clearly stated that the jumper was responsible for any damage or loss or anything beyond "normal wear and tear." BUT... Students were told to chop a bad canopy. Period. The line went pretty much like "If you pull the handle on the ground, on purpose or accidentely, you owe for the repack. But if you need to chop it, chop it. We don't charge for that. Do not think for even one moment about the cost if you are in the air." And while we could have charged for lost handles, freebags ect, we never did. We usually had the "usual suspects" watching from the ground and they would all spread out to get bearings on the canopy and freebag. The pilot would go up with a couple extra pairs of eyeballs to spot it if we couldn't find it right away. It was expected (and made clear) that students were to help locate any lost gear. Nope. By driving it 30 miles each way you are actually treating it better than shorter trips would. If the driving is mostly freeway, it is even less wear. That's presuming that "Freeway" means smooth and steady, not stop and go commuter freeway stuff. Smooth, steady driving doesn't put any wear on the brakes or clutch, and (as long as fluids are at proper levels) puts less wear and tear on the transmission and engine. Bearings and tires will still go at their "mileage" times, which will be sooner on the calendar, but that stuff is normal. FWIW, I had a semi truck make it well over 700K and it was still running fine when they took it away, traded it and gave me a new one. They do a few things to the big trucks to make them last, but the most important things are regular maintenance and steady driving. Mid-eighties, downtown Appleton Wi was in serious decline. The economy was down, and retail was fleeing. The big new mall built on the edge of town, technically in the neighboring town that the mayor really hated, was "stealing our downtown." So if everyone wants to go to a "mall". they decided to build one in the middle of downtown. You know, "If we build it they will come... back." Yep, it worked great. They kind of ignored that the new mall had free parking, lots of stores, was fully indoors and was easy to get to from the highway. So they closed off a major street going through downtown, built this medium sized mall (nowhere near as big as the new one) and watched it... Stay half empty. The two major department stores closed. One after less than a year, the other after a few more years. Both of those were converted into office space and a children's museum. The office space was the only thing that kept the two restaraunts in the food court alive (there was space for a dozen or more). There were a few stores that stayed, but they were downtown fixtures that got a rent subsidy because their original stores were torn down to build the mall. Nobody who actually had to operate under real business conditions made it. Nobody. It was a joke. That cost the taxpayers a lot of money. Yes. Here in Wisconsin we have a "72 hour hold." Pretty much any cop can take someone into an emergency room and have them held in a locked ward "for their own protection." Most of these are legit, but I know a couple guys who had their "soon to be ex-wife" report them as suicidal to the cops and end up in the hospial while the woman cleans out the house and bank accounts. It is a mostly good system, but it has potential for abuse. I'd really hate to see any setup where someone can be put away for any real length of time, or even had any of their rights (including the 2nd) removed. Do you really think either party is going to move on an entrenched and divisive issue (guns and abortion are the two that come to mind first) as a "sign"? That would be the political equivalent of bending over with a "Kick Me" sign on your butt. Political compromise has to start small. And during the so-called "Supercommittee" crap last fall, the Dems did offer a willingness to bend a little on spending cuts, but the Repubs were not willing to bend on tax increases at all. I'm more conservative than liberal, but I'm fed up with the bullshit from the Repubs. The last straw for me was how they were willing to shut down the government if the tax cuts weren't extended to everyone, including the top income levels, but were willing to allow the temporary SS tax breaks to expire without a big fight. Because those don't affect the top income levels. They did a pretty good job of demonstrating who they really care about, at least to me. Search the term "Bandit Jump" Proper notification of ATC, permission of the landowner. Usually public land isn't ok becuase it is owned by the city, not the public. Its kind of fun, like watching motor racing for the crashes. Plus my company is headquartered there, I have family there, and have spent several years there so it does interest me. Besides, US residents here on SC generally have no problems putting the boot in to criticise the 2 countries I call home. Plus, as the worlds largest economy, what happens here affects just about everywhere else. Look how our banking crisis affected the entire world economy. I also think the opinion of those watching from the outside has real value. They are less likely to have a personal stake in the situation. If you can get the same results in other ways, more power to you. Kind of the "higher power of your understanding." Get a good briefing. At the DZs I've travelled to (admitedly, not a lot) I always get a good briefing. Either directly from manifest, or from someone manifest points out (the basic response was "I'm busy, but that guy over there can help you. HEY (insert name here) I NEED YOU TO BRIEF THIS GUY!!!) The briefings I have gotten all include an aerial photo. Landmarks, jumprun, where to and not to land (both on and off the DZ) landing patterns, and the best one of all - "Anything else you think I need to know?" That can range from manifest procedure to walking off the landing area to where to put your stuff. I don't know. Would a total replacement get rid of all the bullshit and lies and such, or would it just replace it with new bullshit, lies and such? You know, "Meet the new boss, same as the old boss." Would a complete lack of experience cause total chaos? Or could we possibly get people into office that are willing to make the hard choices and tell the truth about what the future must hold (higher taxes, less entitlements) to survive? I doubt it.
