Well, if you are jumping from a turbine, it isn't an issue at all. If you are jumping from a 182, then there is a strong possibility that the plane is STC'd for autogas. Unleaded autogas. Not all jump 182s are operated with the STC, but every one that I have jumped from (total of 5) was. And from an overall standpoint, leaded avgas isn't that big of a deal. Leaded car gas was. It really was. Mainly because there were tens of millions of cars burning billions of gallons of gas annually (in the US alone, more if you count the whole world). The relatively small number of piston powered planes that are burning a relatively small amount of leaded gas (even with the high levels of lead in it) isn't going to create that much pollution. Breathing the highly diluted exhaust, even for a few hours a day, won't give a person that much lead exposure. As someone pointed out, the CO from the exhaust will kill you before the lead has any effect. And it's a much bigger threat to children. It causes serious developmental problems. Adults, OTOH, can stand greater exposure without harm. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Lucky McSwervy "~ya don't GET old by being weak & stupid!" - Airtwardo

Well, it was Customs in addition to the TSA. And given his past history of behavior on flights (like when he went to the SuperBowl), I think that Customs might have a "reasonable suspicion" that he or someone with him might be in possession of something illegal. Comprehensive Pro-Gun Bill Georgia Law 23 Apr 14
wolfriverjoe replied to RonD1120's topic in Speakers Corner
I presume that would only be in the context of whether you're required to volunteer the information if it isn't already asked. I haven't checked out every state, but I'd be pretty surprised if any state carves out an exception to the general law (which prohibits lying to authorities) and specifically allows you to say "no" to The Question if the clear truth is "yes". You presume correctly on that. Some states require a person carrying with a permit to inform the LEO that they are armed at the first reasonable opportunity. Others have no such requirement, but require an honest answer if the LEO asks. Wisconsin falls into the 2nd category (no requirement to tell). Indiana and Ohio fall into the first. There was a "Bad Cop" video from Ohio (we discussed it on here) where the guy tries several times to tell the cop that he is carrying, but the cop won't let the guy get more than 2 or 3 words out before the cop yells at the guy to shut up. And then, of course, the cop gets bent out of shape and threatens to shoot the guy for not telling the cop that the guy is carrying (I tried to use "him" & "he" but it was worse). I would put some of 'Twardo's up there. These come to mind first: The Arizona trip (I don't know who he was, but he sure could spot). The Gayle Sayers smoke grenade mount story (Here's your marker back) The "Pyro that didn't ignite quite the way it was supposed to (I must have a malfunction... or something) The "We had to dumb it down" post (Of all the things that changed over the years, it wasn't the gloves) He also C&P'd a piece from one of the Wiki parodies about skydiving, the disciplines and the planes that was great (but it was a copy, not an original) The new guy telling KV that he didn't know what he was talking about. Some of Nipp1eBoy's trolls were ok. For posts that were links to other places, the Gold Bond thread has to be an all time great. The "Lutz-a-like on a Bike', where the guy put NOS energy drink into his gas tank, thinking it was fuel additive was good. And of course, NARWALES!!!! WaltAppel was perma-banned before my time, so I really haven't experienced him. But I have to give the absolute, no question, most favorite, bestest of all time post to LawRocket's summation, with picture links and names, of the "Name That Rack" thread. Good behavior?, Less drinking?, Plenty of sleep?, not my experience with boogies. I guess skydiving has matured... Well, for someone in their first season and at their first boogie, I think it's excellent advice. He doesn't have enough experience to be sure to properly gear up when half asleep and three-quarters hungover. He hasn't been around long enough to be able to deal with jumping all day and partying all night, then repeating. It's really easy to over do it, then be tired, hungover, dehydrated, ect. That's when good judgement goes away. That's when stupid stuff happens. That's when accident happen. A couple years ago, at Summerfest, I was pushing pretty hard. All jumping, not partying. By the 3rd day, I was exhausted and didn't realize it. I was getting sloppy in my flying, doing worse and trying harder. Finally, I did a full speed drive towards my slot and was going too fast to stop. The collision was not pretty. Nobody got hurt, fortunately, but I decided I should sit down for a few jumps. The load organizer was happy to hear that, and said that if I hadn't suggested it first, he was going to. He could see my performance deteriorating and was concerned. I spent most of that afternoon napping on the sofa in the hangar. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Voter issues? Nah, they dont exist do they......
wolfriverjoe replied to rushmc's topic in Speakers Corner
And the funniest part of this is that any "Voter ID" requirements would do absolutely nothing to prevent this sort of fraud. Double registration is the actual person voting twice. Not a stand-in voting in their place. Has anyone, anywhere made a valid complaint that they were not allowed to vote because someone else had already cast their vote? That's the only thing requiring ID to vote would prevent. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." No. The NFL is actually a NON-PROFIT organization. Really. Each individual team is a for-profit business, but the league itself is legally non-profit. http://www.npr.org/2014/01/18/263767372/the-nfl-big-business-with-big-tax-breaks "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Marshal kills Utah gang defendant who rushed court witness
wolfriverjoe replied to JerryBaumchen's topic in The Bonfire
When you are actually serious, you make good points Andy. Of course when you are being silly and sarcastic, you make good points too. I agree that use of deadly force should never have been necessary. There are plenty of ways to prevent or defend against that sort of attack, from restraints to having the defendant in a different room (video conferenced in with attorneys in both places) to a "wall of muscle" in the form of several large bailiffs. Wisconsin courts sometimes use a "Taser Belt" on potentially unruly defendants. It's a standard Taser setup inside a belt, with the probes already touching the skin. A bailiff has a remote control to activate the power if needed. It's put under the clothing, so it isn't visible to prejudice the juries. Of course, it wouldn't work if it wasn't. I've always thought it was a rather elegant way to handle any "problem children" in court. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." So how would the device then work? Say you cut away at 3000ft and not do anything. Then by the time you get to the activiation altitude, your speed should be higher then the activation speed. But say you only cut away at just above 1000ft. Changes are that you won't have the activation speed. Should the AAD then fire at activation altitude, regardless of speed? If so, won't that in case of a cutaway always result in a AAD fire? Or am I missing something? :) You are not missing anything. That is exactly what it is supposed to do. Cutting away at 1000ft you simply do not have time to get stable or anything like that. Under those circumstances you need to get something out as fast as possible, and that is the purpose of this thing. But it still allows you to get stable and pull manually if you have more altitude, contrarily to what an RSL does. In other words, it leaves you completely on your own unless it is completely necessary to take action. I still prefer a normal RSL, but there is some people that doesn't. I think you missed his question. I read his question as: Will the AAD still fire at ~750' after a cutaway, whether or not the reserve is open? Scenario A - Cutaway at 900 feet. Your device arms the AAD and it fires, even though the jumper is not at freefall speeds. This is it's intended purpose. Scenario B - Cutaway at 3000 feet. Reserve handle pulled, under open reserve at 2000 feet. Flying under reserve canopy, what happens when you descend to and through AAD activation altitude? Since your device has told the AAD to fire regardless of freefall speed after the cutaway, will the AAD fire as the jumper is passing (slowly) through ~750' under an open and functioning reserve? I don't see any real advantages to this. It adds complexity, and does little that a normal RSL doesn't do. The failure modes for an RSL are rare enough (outside of special stuff like CRW and large camera setups) that I don't see this adding any advantages over an RSL. And you asked if anyone had had a "cutaway too low to reach activation speeds" situation. Yes. The fatal in Eloy this month was one. She chopped low, didn't pull the reserve until too late. And she was too low/slow for the AAD to help. It fired after she pulled the reserve, but she had pulled the reserve low enough that it was barely out of the bag before impact. Brian Burke had a very detailed report in the thread in Incidents. Billvon has stated that there were a couple of them just like that at the WFFC too. So it has happened. More than once. Good time for a concealed carry pistol. I wonder how a well .40 S&W from a Sig 229 would take down a lion.

What have I done? What to do, what to do?
wolfriverjoe replied to xlh883's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Not to hijack the thread but how does a newbie identify said Skygods? What is their common trait? Attitude. They know everything, and won't listen to anything. They are the first to tell you what you are doing wrong, but the last to answer any questions. They are the ones who grab a beer when it's free, but then just disappear. You don't have to worry a whole lot about them, because they generally just ignore the newer jumpers. Fortunately, they are a small minority. Most jumpers are welcoming, helpful and friendly. Ask questions, listen to the answers, pay attention and learn. Although, it seems that the ones who complain the most about the "SkyGod Attitude" are the ones who don't listen when they get answers that they don't like. The ones who already know it all because they got a letter from someone important. The sort of "Junior SkyGods." "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." So, seeing this is how he is treated by the left, whats your point? Well, he's treated as the Messiah by the extreme left and the AntiChrist by the extreme right. Next one of the Christian values under threat!
wolfriverjoe replied to Stumpy's topic in Speakers Corner
So do you tolerate divorced people in your church? Or remarried (divorced and remarried) people? How about unmarried couples? There's a lot more in the bible about those sins than about homosexuality. There's even punishments proscribed. Do you follow those? Or do you simply pick and choose which sins you (and your church) think are "Bad" and which ones you let slide? "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." There are specific cloud clearance minimums for the US. FAA rules not USPA. They apply to everyone in the air (planes, balloons, skydivers, everyone). Well, everyone not on an IFR flight plan. Rig not jumped in 15 months
wolfriverjoe replied to sky-pimp's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
It's a trade-off. If it's packed, it's well protected in the rig. If it's unpacked, it's a bit easier on it, but you risk damage. Personally, I'd leave it packed. As long as it's kept in a cool &dry place, the main shouldn't get too stuck. The reserve won't at all. I opened up a reserve that had been packed for several years. When I pulled the freebag off, it held the shape very nicely. It was like a brick. I grabbed the lines and gave it 3 or 4 good shakes, and it came apart fine. It probably would have opened just fine. If you decide to take the canopies out, get a bin (rubbermaid makes perfect ones, but there are others) to keep it in. Pulling the p/c to save the spandex is a good idea. No. He "decided" that he didn't like what the BLM was doing with the money, so he "decided" that he was going to pay the county instead. Since they had no authority to accept the money, they didn't. This is in the daughter's description of "Their Side" of the events. It was linked a ways back. Sort of like a tenant decides he doesn't like what the landlord is doing, so he pays the rent to the guy in 3A instead. And, FWIW, when someone is evicted from a rental property, the sheriff (actually deputies from the county) come to execute the eviction order. Resisting that eviction order would be met with force by the deputies. Resisting that order with deadly force (or the threat of it) would be met with a lot of force by the deputies (like the county SWAT team). I always collapse the slider before releasing brakes. It won't make any difference if you have to cut away if you are only collapsing it. If you are putting it behind your head, or attaching it to a "Sky Tie" or something, that's a different set of circumstances, but you said that doesn't apply. Have a rigger take a look at your slider. If it won't stay collapsed, there's something wrong. Sometimes the stitching around where the lines go through comes undone and the "tongue" won't grab hard enough. It's an easy fix. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit."
