  1. My bad - wasn't fully aware of that from what I'd read. (More media choice wording) Just the amount of people I've seen on my social media saying they're going out to buy more guns and stocking on ammo this morning is crazy And then there's me with my nerf gun First off, there's a bit of a difference between "shooting an unarmed suspect" when that suspect presents a clear threat (unarmed doesn't necessarily mean not a threat), and shooting someone who is under control (like the one in Baton Rouge) or someone who is complying with orders, but not in an appropriate way (like the one in Minnesota). Or simply pulling up on a scene, pulling out a gun and opening fire (like the ones in both Cleveland and Chicago). Second off, most of the people who are "going out to buy more guns and stock up on ammo" aren't worried about unrest or Ron's "Shit hitting the fan." They are more worried about potential restrictions being introduced, and shortages from panic buying (which those very people are creating). 2. Not right now, I'm not in a position to access gear. It looked a lot like THIS. Standard 3 rings. The riser had rolled forward with no tension on it (probably with the riser being pushed towards the 3 rings), and the middle sized ring had gone through the big ring and was now on the back side of it. All the tension would have been on the little ring, it's attachment and the white loop. This had happened sometime after landing, probably when gathering up the canopy. Just take an open rig, push the riser towards the MLW, and roll it forward. The middle ring can push through the big ring. It was a lot harder to get it back out that it was to do it when I recreated it. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 3. Well - it looks like the FBI is going to get another chance at her. Do you believe in the concept of double jeopardy? If you think that applies in this context, you certainly don't! Uh huh . . . How many times should the government be allowed to "investigate" an incident involving a person after repeatedly finding not enough evidence to even try the person once? Should that be something that is allowed to happen for the rest of a person's life? Unfortunately, yes. She hasn't been "put in jeopardy" (put on trial) at all. They haven't charged or tried her. So the idiots in Congress can "investigate" her as many times as they want. The FBI can continue to investigate her as long as it wants. She can be indicted any time they decide they have enough evidence to warrant charges (subject to the statute of limitations, of course). Fortunately, the FBI & Justice Dept seem to have enough sense to realize that there isn't sufficient evidence to bring charges. The Rs in congress on the other hand... 4. There is a part of the altimeter that is sealed, offering a comparison with the outside pressure. It's called the "aneroid" and the lens has nothing to do with sealing it. This is an aircraft altimeter, because I couldn't find an inside view of a hand mounted one. But the basic principle/components are similar: https://atpflight.wikispaces.com/file/view/altimeter.png/335452582/altimeter.png Edit to add: Kind of a funny thought: In an airplane, the pressure for the altimeter (and other stuff too) comes through the "static pressure port" (basically a hole in the plane in a spot where they can find a good stable reading). If that gets plugged, the alti, VSI and airspeed indicator will all be wrong. I was taught that if that happens, static pressure can be let into the system by... Breaking the lens on the altimeter. Internal cabin pressure won't be a perfect representation of static pressure (IIRC, it's usually a bit below), but it's better than not having it. 5. Thanks. For some reason or another, that video didn't show up when I looked for it. Or I simply missed it. 6. I saw a 3 ring flip through on a sport rig last weekend. We had just done a jump together, and when he laid it out on the mat, he saw it "wasn't right", but really didn't know what was wrong. I had to take a good look at it before I realized what it was (although I clearly saw that it "wasn't right" too). I had to wiggle and work it a bit to get it back right, then when the owner asked "how did it get that way?", was able to flip it wrong again with next to no effort, just push the right (wrong?) way. And, of course, then had to wiggle, work and fight to get it back right again. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 7. I didn't see it, but I found this short video on the CBS site. Werid Al playing the theme song. I don't know if there was more to it than that. I've liked Weird Al since high school. 8. I'm not a pilot, but I used to judge their actions professionally. I think getting the flaps out would be more analogous to having a larger canopy, not flaring. Pulling back on the control yoke to pitch the plane up would be more like flaring. As any pilot will tell you, adding flaps does increase drag as well as slowing the landing speed, so some pitch changes usually have to be made when they are extended. Real pilots, critique away. Pretty close, John. Flaps add both lift and drag. You go slower, and at the same time, stall speed is reduced. Adding flaps at the "wrong time" (like in the middle of the bounce) would not have been a really good idea, as it does change how the plane flies a bit. That's a problem with electric flaps. They take time, and often take attention - In the Cessnas I've flown, if you only want partial flaps, you have to put the switch down, watch the gauge, then put it back to "off" when you get the setting you want. Maybe 15 seconds to extend them. The old school manual flaps have a big lever, similar to a hand operated emergency brake in a car. Yank up and it clicks to the settings. Takes a half a second, I could do it with my eyes closed (hey, some of those approaches were scary). Just from what I see in the pics, the plane is fixable. A bit of sheetmetal on the wings, new wingtips, new nose gear (maybe straighten out the firewall), new prop (fixed pitch - it is maybe fixable). I've seen worse put back into shape and flown again (yes, I flew them). "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 9. How about holding hearings on the FBI probe? Some sort of weird cross between the Energizer Bunny and the Terminator (the first movie one). They just won't stop. 10. The PRECENTAGE of households with guns is going down. (well, taking these poll values at face value) The number of households with guns, otoh, is not. 50% of 229.5M (1981) = 114.75M 36% of 318.9 (2016) = 114.8M You touch on an important point: Taking those polls at face value. I doubt they are all that accurate, and are becoming less so. A lot of people won't publicly admit to being a gun owner. Especially to random strangers. For a variety of reasons. 11. But then he would have to deal with the headline that said the FBI recommends no charges be filed against Clinton. I don't think his little heart could take it. 12. You've said this a couple times. What would you add? "Military style" guns? All semi autos? Keep in mind that the NFA was passed in response to the gangsters of the thirties in general, and the Valentine's Day Massacre in particular. And, interestingly, the Miller decision found it constitutional because a short barreled shotgun was not a military weapon, and therefore not suitable for a militia, so it wasn't protected by the 2nd for civilian possession. . REAL militias the world over use RPGs and hand grenades. So by your logic... Well, it's not my logic. It's the argument of the US government. And it was a case where the defendants were "not represented in any form" at the Supreme Court. Link Its a pretty odd case, in a variety of ways. But, if you read the link, the government argued (and was somewhat incorrect in it's argument) that a short-barreled shotgun was not a military weapon. And that the 2nd A only applied to military weapons. And yes, by that argument, hand grenades and anti-tank rockets are protected by the 2nd A. And no, I'm not proposing that they should be legal for civilian possession. FFS, the idiots with fireworks last night were bad enough. 13. In all probability, the NFA would have been struck down had it been followed to it's full conclusion. Miller got killed before that could happen (he wasn't a very nice guy). NFA has all sorts of "uncomfortable" provisions. It puts a lot of power in the hands of a local chief or sheriff. The general idea was to keep those particular guns out of the hands of "known bad guys", but it ends up allowing an individual to say "I don't like those kinds of guns. I won't allow anyone to acquire them." Or only his buddies. I know the "trust loophole" allows people to get around that, but it no longer applies to full auto. The "tax" also is a bit disturbing. When it went into effect, $200 was a lot of money. It hasn't changed in 80 years, but there's no reason congress couldn't raise it (IIRC, equivalent would be something like $3500). And back to the first question: What would you like to see added? Any semi auto? Even a 10/22? Any military style semi? Like an AR-15, AK-47 or similar? Then where do you draw the line? Do we go back to the AWB and use cosmetic features (pistol grips, folding stocks, bayonet lugs)? For heaven's sake, let them keep flash hiders. An AR without one is really annoying to be next to. How about a Mini-14? Or an M1A? Or older stuff like a Garand or M1 Carbine? Do those not count because they have wooden furniture? How about a Remmy 742? Or a BAR? Or maybe just magazines that hold a lot of ammo. That would be a nightmare. And how would it be implemented? Have every one of the (roughly) gazillion owners of these types of guns register them with the BATF? Seriously, that won't happen. Look at Connecticut. Look at Canada. Some of the nicer folks in the world, and their registration scheme was a fiasco. And, in all seriousness, I have to agree with the post from a few pages back. It's nice to have a (generally) civil and rational discussion on this. Far better than the troll fight in the other thread. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 14. This popped up on my FB feed. I don't think it's been posted before, but my memory is failing lately. A married Irishman went into the confessional and said to his priest, 'I almost had an affair with another woman.' The priest said, 'What do you mean, almost?' The Irishman said, 'Well, we got undressed and rubbed together, but then I stopped.' The priest said, 'Rubbing together is the same as putting it in. You're not to see that woman again. For your penance, say five Hail Mary's and put $50 in the poor box.' The Irishman left the confessional, said his prayers, and then walked over to the poor box. He paused for a moment and then started to leave. The priest, who was watching, quickly ran over to him saying, 'I saw that. You didn't put any money in the poor box !' The Irishman replied, 'Yeah, but I rubbed the $50 on the box, and according to you, that's the same as putting it in !' "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 15. My mother married at 17. Four weeks after her 19th birthday, she was the mother of two boys. Children, eh? Jerry Baumchen PS) I had aunts who were married when they were 15. Times have changed. The ages of those contestants is 15 - 19. Under 18 is a minor. They tend to take that more seriously these days. Not judging, but how many of those who married young ended up having perfectly healthy babies that were a couple months "premature"? 16. Wow. Thanks for the details. Pure speculation, but having the PC "up high towards his head" may have let it end up in the burble behind him (which could explain how it ended up near his foot). 17. Perhaps. More likely that the lawyers are basically doing what their client (and it's probably only one at this point) wants. She dictates what she thinks their position should be, the lawyers translate it into "legalese." They aren't doing this on contingency (no fee unless they win). They are getting paid for every word, punctuation mark and even space. I mentioned this before. Are they simply doing it for the money? Are they being buffaloed and bulldozered by their client? Is there some sort of "favor" they owe "someone" that they are continuing this case this far? No clue. But I can't see this appeal going anywhere. The trial judge gave CQS every possible break, and in the end, gave them zero. There weren't any substantial errors in the case, there is virtually no chance of any of the elements being reversed. I'm not a lawyer, but I have a reasonable familiarity with it. Far more on the criminal law side than civil, but enough to see how futile this appeal is. 20. Pat Summit died this morning. She was diagnosed with early stage Alzheimer's in 2011, retired in 2012. Winningest coach in D-1 Basketball of all time. By all accounts, a classy lady. It's not in the linked story, but I saw an interview a while back that she was most proud of the fact that every one of her players who completed all four years of eligibility graduated. 100% graduation rate. 21. Not much they can say. The idea that any of this had anything to to with "concerns for women's health" was a joke from the start. I found it rather patronizing that abortion was the only procedure that they applied this standard to. NO other medical procedure was thought to be in need of this. Even ones that have way more risk of complication and need of additional medical care. But they lie about "selling baby parts", they lie about "concerns for women's health", they lie about a lot of stuff. 22. Not really. Japan has very strict gun laws. Yet the Yakuza gangsters seem to be able to obtain them. Mexico and much of South and Central America have fairly strict gun laws (not total prohibition, but much of what the "Anti" crowd would like to see implemented) and it's a huge stretch to say they don't have gun violence. Although much of Mexico's gun violence problem is blamed on the US; the full auto rifles, hand grenades and rocket launchers (either RPGs or LAWs) don't come from the US civilian market "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 23. More than likely. You are old enough to remember when the "glass cockpit" first was introduced. They did "oodles and boodles" of research and found that displaying "needle and dial" gauges on the panel was "best." Everyone they tested was able to read and interpret those faster and more accurately than a digital display. But then, everyone they tested had been "reading and interpreting" needles and dials their entire life. Fast forward a generation, and all "them younguns" have been reading and interpreting digital displays their entire life. Further research shows that most of the differences disappear. I did a quick search for the research results, but can't find it right now. But this isn't SC, so I hope you'll trust me on this. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 24. Well, first off, an individual cannot buy a pistol outside of their state of residence from a dealer. So the argument that "people in Chicago could avoid the ban by going to a gun store in Indiana" is a flat out lie (and it just came up in the news the other day). Second, "Internet Purchases" follow all the rules that any transfer requires. In the case of a new firearm, it has to go through a dealer. In the case of inter-state purchases, it has to go through a dealer (the internet seller will ask you which FFL holder they should ship the gun to). The claims that Cho (VA Tech shooter) got his guns "Over the internet" was only partly true. He ordered them (one came from Green Bay, IIRC), but they were shipped to an FFL holder and properly transferred to him. How would "record keeping" and "mandatory reporting of stolen guns" reduce gun violence? Telling the cops that someone stole your gun won't do a damned thing to get it back. I don't have a problem with training requirements... Unless they are used like the old "Voter tests" were in the south. Used to prevent "those people" from voting. Kinda like Chicago tried to do. Require training, including live fire at a shooting range, but prohibit ranges from operating in the city. Of course, those in Chicago who "had connections" could get a "Special Police" badge that let them carry a gun. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 25. Well, for the average citizen, no. There is really no need to worry about terrorism at all. There was a video bouncing around FB last week. It mentioned a poll that found that 51% of Americans were 'worried about being killed in a terrorist attack.' Yet, since 1970, there have been 1 in 3,500,000 (three and a half million) Americans killed by terrorists. I'm fairly sure you understand the concept of "risk assessment". A few simple questions are asked: #1 - How high is the risk of an attack happening? It's very small.' #2 - What is the potential damage from an attack? Depending on the attack, it can be fairly high, even very high. #3 - What are the potential targets? Terrorists like publicity. So big, high profile, often government owned targets are at the top of the list. So they increase security at the high profile targets. Airline security appears to be tightened (it really isn't, but that's another subject). Government buildings get big flowerpots out front, stronger glass in the front windows, metal detectors at the entrances, ect. New York City (and a lot of other major metro areas) are big targets. So they get more money for the cops, radiation detectors (don't ride the New York subway right after a procedure that uses radio isotopes), lots of cameras, that sort of thing. But there are a bazillion targets. How many have been attacked? It wouldn't be all that hard. A small terror cell that could build it's own bombs (rather than need an FBI informant to build the bombs for them) and set them off in a manner that would cause great havoc. If they were smart enough to stay off cell phones and the internet, they could easily pull it off.* After the Sept 11 attacks, my (then) wife was seriously worried about another attack (to the point of affecting her sleep). It took a lot of convincing for her to understand that we were not at risk. Not in a little town in NE Wisconsin. Unless they set of a nuke device in Minneapolis (prevailing winds would make fallout a problem), we were safe from just about any attack. Even if the terrs decided to attack a sleepy little town in the midwest (which would scare the crap out of the country something serious), they would have tens of thousands to choose from before they got to us. So no. I think as ordinary citizens in ordinary cities and towns, we need not worry about terrorism. I don't. *I know you live in Chicago, professor. How bad would it be if terrorists set off truck bombs at expressway/tollway interchanges. Say 80/94/294 (south end), 294/55, 294/290, 294/90 and 294/94 (north end). It would paralyze the city. And wreak havoc for a long time. Since 80, 90 and 94 are major east-west interstates, it would affect the entire northern part of the country. And it wouldn't be all that hard. Build a few "OKC" style truck bombs. Park them under the overpass with the flashers on, get in partner's car and drive off. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit."
