  1. You forgot the mantra: "Guns DON'T kill people....." Naah. I don't play silly, sematic, "one-up" games on here. Besides, guns don't kill people. Bullets do. 2. And right along with that is the fact that "assault weapons" (military style semi-auto) kill a bit over 200 people per year. Less than one percent (total killings by that particular type of weapon, no distinction as to how many were killed per incident) of gun deaths. Edit to add: Although, I have to admit that the woman who is now making sure she knows where the emergency exits are is doing something smart. Mass shootings are extremely rare. Fires aren't. People die in a "public building fire" because the main exits jam up and people get trapped. After about the first minute, most of the people who escape do so through alternative exits (emergency exits, "back doors", windows, whatever). 3. Wow. I hope they had a shoe for the top of the door. (Yes, I know it probably didn't have a jump door on it) Seriously, probably not all that much. Extra insulation for the occupants. Maybe fuel tank heaters. Oh yeah, do not, under any circumstances, shut down. It's a great STOL plane. Perfect for the place. It was a Canadian plane, so it's probably already set up for the cold. I thought they used C-130s for that, but apparently, they can't during winter. 4. Maybe, maybe not. One interesting thing I recently heard is how short the money from Trump to the main party is. Like less than 5% of what it's been in the past. Which may not seem important, but the party does the "grass roots" stuff. Like the "get out the vote" stuff. Which is very important in the general election. One of Obama's keys in 08 was the 'get out the vote' part. He had people who hadn't voted in a long time, or ever, going to the polls. Without it, the Rs are in trouble. The Ds will push their people to the voting booth, but without the money, the Rs won't be able to. And a lot of Rs are going to sit this one out. Which doesn't bode well for the other Rs running (Senate, Congress, and a host of local elections). Part of me wants to see Trump win. Billvon's reference to a skydiver "femuring" is a pretty good analogy. Part of me wants to see the Rs destroy themselves. Maybe a reasonable conservative party would result (doubtful, but maybe). Part of me wants to see HRC win. Most of that is to watch the conservatives have apoplexies, and then be proven wrong (I really don't like her, but she has enough experience that she could likely do the job reasonably well). Kind of like how the Rs seem unable to explain how (they mostly ignore it), despite their doom and gloom predictions, Obama has done a pretty good job, given what he took over . 5. To a certain degree, yes. But when I'm doing 5 over the limit, an asshole is 5 feet off my bumper, and there's no safe place to move over? When I'm in traffic, with a whole lot of cars in front of me and the asshole is 5 feet off my bumper (riding my ass won't make the people in front of me go any faster)? It's dangerous, selfish and stupid. And if they are "late to a job they can't afford to lose", then they should have left earlier. Speeding won't get them there fast enough to matter and causing an accident (see my link above) will make them even later. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 6. The problem with that position is that the Republican party as whole has subtly and quietly promoted all the things Trump is being open about - Anti-immigration, anti-Muslim, xenophobia in general. They preyed upon "ignorance, prejudice, fear and isolation." Along with religious fundamentalism and an anti-women's rights agenda. And now that someone is bold enough to actually say these things out loud, they are claiming that the party has been "hijacked." Riiiiiight. 7. Tempted, yes. I'll tap the brakes a bit now and again, especially for someone who keeps coming up close when I open a bit of space up. But actually causing an accident? No. Even though a rear end is completely the other guy's fault, the hassle isn't worth it. And insurance usually doesn't pay enough. This happened a few miles from my house, back in March. It's perfect. The car in front doesn't seem to slow down, he (or she) is just flashing the brake lights. But the reaction from the idiot who is waaaay to close is priceless. http://www.postcrescent.com/story/news/local/2016/03/11/suv-tailgates-then-crashes--41/81636622/ "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 9. It's "Sabre", not "Saber." I still make that mistake from time to time in my logbook. End cell closure seems to be normal, but seems to depend on the individual canopy. I've heard a lot about it, but mine doesn't do it. Funky, random turns of up to 180 degrees on opening are common. This may depend on the individual canopy, but mine does it. Make sure the sides of the slider are pulled out well. I had some random hard openings until someone I trusted about this stuff said that test jumps had shown that this was important. The hard openings stopped as soon as I started doing it. I jump a 170 @ about 1.15:1. It's a fun canopy. Fun when I crank on it (toggles or risers), easy to fly and land. I don't get to jump as much as I'd prefer to, so I have no plans to downsize or change canopies. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 10. The whole thing is. And, interestingly, the parallels between this campaign and vote and Trump's campaign for President are both numerous and scary (vague promises, scary things - both real and imagined, ignorance, ect). One of the more interesting things I came across was THIS. A Washington Post article on the fact that the top questions being asked of Google are all along the lines of "What happens if Britain leaves the EU?" and, of course "What is the EU?" And, no, it's not The Onion. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Lucky McSwervy "~ya don't GET old by being weak & stupid!" - Airtwardo
  11. Your time would have been better spent reading science books than the 2,000 year old book of neolithic fables you prefer. Truth is when it was relevant, I wasn't reading either. It was just too boring. I'd rather be doing than reading. When the Bible became important to me science played no part in my life at all. It remained boring. I got some news for you Ron: Science plays a huge part in your life. Boring or not, believe it or not, agree with it or not. Drive a car? Go to the doctor? Eat food (even the stuff you grow yourself)? Even your guns are "science". "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 13. First off, no "roasting." You had a problem and are asking for help. Second off, quit beating yourself up. You made a mistake, that's what students do. Learn from it and move forward. Besides, this is an 'eye-opening' kind of error. It generally leaves a big impression. Which means you are less likely to repeat it. You aren't the first one to do this. It sounds more like a "sensory overload" thing than a "presentation" thing (analog vs digital). You said you saw the numbers but they didn't register as a value. You say it's hard to explain, but it makes perfect sense to me (been there, done that). What helped me was to correlate the "number" on the altimeter with the "value" of the height above the ground. The best way for me to do that was on the way up in the plane (as was described above). Look at the alti, say the number out loud, look out the window and see the height. Do the same thing on the jump (nobody can hear you, but say the number out loud in freefall too). Look at the alti, say the number, take a quick look at the ground (although I have to admit it took me a fair number of jumps before I was able to see any detail on the ground). As with everything else on here, run it past your instructors before doing it in the air. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 14. Well, of course you could skydive. Even on earth, you don't need a parachute to skydive. You need a parachute to skydive more than once. Sorry, couldn't resist. Seriously, they used parachutes for the descent of the Mars Rovers. It was pretty big, and wasn't able to slow it enough for a soft landing (they used rocket decellerators on one and bounced it on airbags for another). But the parachutes functioned properly. http://mars.nasa.gov/mer/mission/spacecraft_edl_parachute.html "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 15. How about "Sucker falling for a con man's slick line"? If he wins, and does to the US what he did to Atlantic City, hiding in the mountains of North Georgia may very well turn out to be a good choice. 16. I don't think this falls under the definition of a "Straw Purchase." While she did purchase it intending to sell it, that isn't illegal, at least not for only one gun. Do it a bunch of times and you need an FFL. She didn't purchase it with a prior agreement with the person she sold it to. She didn't buy it with the intent to give or sell it to someone who was prohibited from owning a gun. Besides, the percentage of prosecutions of people who falsify 4473s is extremely small. 17. Ya mean that "Christian Foundation" that was added on later by... Christians? America wasn't founded as a "Christian Nation", no matter how much you want to believe that. It's often very sad to see someone learn that his cherished, long held beliefs are false. Bitterness and denial are typical. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 18. For there to be a flaw in your logic, there would have to have been some actual logic in there in the first place. So it's "flawless."
  19. Not exactly. "Freedom of Speech" means that the Government can't outlaw what he says. That is, he can't be prosecuted for "hate speech." It doesn't mean that he, as a public employee, can't be held to a standard regarding public statements on social media (which is apparently what he was suspended for violating). The idea of "Freedom of Speech" does not mean that someone is free of any consequences for saying stupid, bigoted things. Regardless of how "honest" they may or may not be. 20. Probably none. But this one has a chance of not coming from The Donald: I am more presidential than anybody, other than the great Abe Lincoln. Jerry Baumchen Hi Jerry, That's what I thought too, so I searched it. I figured his ego wouldn't allow him to be second to anyone. It's real. Of course, Lincoln wasn't quite as great as the mythology likes to make him, but of course, Trump ignores that. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 21. So "progressive liberals" forced you to understand how privileged you were? They forced you to realize how badly people unlike you were treated? And while being "against communism" could be a good thing, the way he trampled on people rights in doing so made the "cure worse than the disease" (far, far worse). The tactics and techniques used by him were far more reminiscent of a totalitarian dictatorship (like maybe the Soviet Union) than the US and it's stated rules. 22. Why? Being on a no-fly list doesn't remove anyone's life, liberty (in context) or property. It might impinge on your pursuit of happiness, but these days no-one is too happy with airline travel. AFAIK, the "No Fly" list is perfectly legal, without due process. Because there is no "right" to travel on an airliner. It's a private conveyance. If someone is prohibited from flying, they have alternatives for travel ('Travel' has been found to be a right). However, the right to keep and bear arms is the 2nd A of the BOR. The Supreme Court found it to be an individual right (agree or disagree, that's what they ruled). So denying someone that right requires due process. For example, denying a convicted felon follows due process, because the trial that convicted them of the felony meets the standards. Notice, opportunity to be heard, right of appeal. None of those are in the "process" used for the No Fly list. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 23. What is the process for being put on the list? Who is on the list? What is the process for appealing being put on the list? "Due Process" is a: Source The "No Fly" list is in no way an example of due process. It's the exact opposite. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit."
