  1. On that note, this popped up on a different forum I post on: Genuine Lucas Replacement Smoke. Intended to repair Lucas electrical equipment by reinstalling the smoke that was inadvertently let out. The comments are great too. 2. Loses his home to the floods in Louisiana. Also claims that the floods are "of near Biblical proportion." Really? So a few thousand square miles of flooding compare to the entire world? I have to wonder if he believes God is punishing him for his hatred. But I highly doubt it. 3. That approach plate is genius. I loved it all, but the "Cooked Goose Transition" is perfect. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Lucky McSwervy "~ya don't GET old by being weak & stupid!" - Airtwardo
  4. The "level of busyness" really shouldn't matter for students progressing towards their A License. You might have a half dozen or so in the First Jump Class (the classroom part), but that's irrelevant. The jumps will still be very much one-on-one (two on one for the first few). I jump at a place that runs one Twin Otter, and it turns loads non-stop all day on Saturday & Sunday. 80-100 Tandems isn't unusual. Plus enough fun jumpers & students to keep the plane full (mostly) for all the loads. I'd call that "busy." But all of the AFF students are very well cared for. Nothing is rushed or pushed on the pre-jump training (I've seen instructors scratch off a load and re-manifest a load or two later when the student wasn't ready). The post jump debrief is the same way. No student is "ditched" because the instructor is on a short call. I've never been to SDD, but their reputation is similar. They may be busy, but that doesn't stop them from taking the necessary time and care with their students. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 5. In the wake of the sort of incident that happened recently, ambulance chasers often show up on here trolling for inflammatory information. Not particular details about a particular incident, but trying to find ways to portray the sport as a whole as reckless. I don't think you or the other new guy are that, but there may well be one in the incidents forum. To expand a bit on the lovely Skymamma's answers: The chances of seeing the rig you are going to jump being packed is slim at best. However, observing the rigs being packed shouldn't be a problem. Depending on how busy they are (likely to be very busy), the opportunity to observe up close (as in standing right there) and to ask questions may be limited. BUT... Packing is packing. There are several special things about tandem rigs vs sport rigs, but the overall process is similar. You may be able to ask around and find someone to answer your questions and perhaps show you up close and personal how a rig gets packed. We tend to be a friendly bunch. I've shown first timers how a rig is packed a few times (never the rig they were going to jump, usually my own). Breathing - It isn't too unusual for someone to claim that "they couldn't breathe" in freefall. What typically happens is that the person is so worked up that they forget to exhale. Seriously. They breathe in, then breathe in some more, then some more. Finally their lungs are full and they can't get any more in. So they "can't breathe" anymore. If you yell or scream going out the door, that forces the 'exhale'. Once you do that you should breathe normally. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 7. I believe in the end it was left out of the trial for Steven, mostly because of how dubiously legal it looked. Dassey's confession was not used at Avery's trial. However, elements of it were fairly important to the prosecution. Mainly the timeline. I think there is enough incriminating evidence without any use of the confession or referencing it in any way. And at this point, nobody knows what is going to happen with Dassey. Options are: Appeal the ruling. Let him go. Re-try him. News reports suggest that is the likely probability order. Without the confession, a retrial is iffy at best. Likelyhood of acquittal is pretty high. Letting him go would basically mean he does 11 years for rape and accessory to murder. Appealing the ruling probably has the highest chance of keeping him behind bars. But that would require the ruling being overturned. There's a fair amount of speculation that this ruling is correct, and that the confession should not have been allowed in the first place. 9. Hard to believe that next May will be 40 years since the release of the first one (1977). They are all old. Carrie Fischer is still hot, though. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Lucky McSwervy "~ya don't GET old by being weak & stupid!" - Airtwardo
  10. Ahh. That would be a bit different. The problem is that pilots generally don't care about what's in the bailout rig. They usually share one or two between all the pilots. And many of the pilots have zero experience flying a canopy, so rounds suit them better. I knew perfectly well that the round in the bailout rig was going to: A - open very hard (the story was that one guy had jumped the bailout rig on purpose - it opened so hard his shoes came off). B - land very hard. I understand how hard rounds land, even with a "featherbutt" like me under it. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 11. This thread has proven to me that there is no way for white people to have this conversation without being branded as a hate monger. When you use words that are generally considered "hateful" and "racist" when used by white people, then it's kind of hard not to see you as a "hate monger." Words have meaning. They also have connotation. It's very hard to see you use particular words without seeing the connotation, even if that's not how you mean them. There are people on here who claim that they aren't racist, yet from what they post and how they phrase things, it's very hard (impossible) to not see them as racist. They may not think they are, they may not mean to be, but they certainly come across that way. The incident at OU with the SAE fraternity a couple years back is a good example of this. Despite singing about "niggers never joining SAE", one of the students caught up in this claimed that he never meant to be racist. 12. You keep saying this. The "grievances" are of the entire black population. How they are treated (partly as a result of the actions of the "small population) as a whole. Those grievances are long held and legitimate. I have yet to hear any statements by Obama or any government official that come anywhere close to "advocating violence". Trump's comments on a number of occasions have been a lot more inflammatory. And what cops are "being hunted"? Seriously. There have been a handful of incidents (3 in the past couple of months), all of which resulted in dead "hunters". That's a long way from "hunting" in my book. 13. Sport rigs are not as comfortable as an emergency bailout rig. Especially if he would have had a rather large student rig. I always wore the "pilot rig" when I flew the plane, not my own sport rig. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 15. If I understand correctly they also absorb a lot of the energy of an accidentally loaded live round if one is fired through it. Not really. They plug the barrel (or at least severely restrict it). Trying to shoot a live round through it will likely blow up the gun. The bullet won't go out the end of the barrel with as much velocity (it may not leave at all), so anyone on the "business end" of it is far better off, but the operator is going to be really unhappy. Even a plug of mud or snow can be enough to burst the barrel. I've seen the remnants of a single shot pistol (T/C Contender) that had a double charged cartridge (hand loaded). It blew rather spectacularly. However, a quick search found an incident from 02. Marines during a training exercise. The first round took out the blank adapter, the subsequent rounds killed the Marine. Note that the link says "possible charges, including negligent homicide." It looks like the shooter pleaded guilty to N/H and got a year in prison. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 16. Sure, but to not know which ammunition you loaded is one thing, to not even know which weapon you're using is something else! As a thought, is there any kind of blank adaptor that can be put on small arms like are used with automatic rifles? Well (and this is just a guess), the chief may have thought everyone was using simunition guns when they weren't. Or the media just got it wrong. And regarding the blank adaptors, sort of but not really. What the blank adapters do is contain the gas from the cartridge being fired, which lets the "automatic" (or semi-auto, as the case may be) mechanism function, so that the spent case is ejected and the next one loaded into the chamber. Very few pistols are gas operated, those adapters wouldn't work. They are generally for rifles. Semi auto simunition pistols function, because they are designed to, but "normal" (real) semi auto pistols - which most cops carry - won't fire more than one shot with blanks (unless you pull the slide back manually). In any case, this gun was reported to be a revolver. Which is kind of unusual. Very few cops carry them anymore. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Lucky McSwervy "~ya don't GET old by being weak & stupid!" - Airtwardo
  17. It kind of depends. The only identification of the weapon is "a revolver", and that there were supposed to be blanks in it. There are "practice guns" for this sort of thing. They are called "simunition" guns. They make a bang and fire a pellet, somewhat similar to a paintball. They are not capable of chambering or firing anything but the special sized simunition ammo (you can't fit live ammo into them). Alternatively, they could have simply used blanks in a real revolver. In that case, accidentally putting in live rounds is possible. It means someone was seriously negligent (criminally negligent?) in allowing any live ammo into the training area. It means someone was seriously negligent (criminally negligent?) in loading the gun. Or it could simply be, as you noted, a case of "journalistic misunderstanding." 19. As a pilot, I will always try to educate jumpers on plane safety. But, as passengers, there's really not a whole lot we can do. As Rob noted, look at the general condition of the plane, and how well the pilot preflights it. Adding oil on a regular basis can also be a bad thing (like every other flight). Board safely, use seat belts, sit where you are supposed to, don't move around a whole lot, don't put a whole lot of weight in the back on exit (red line in Skyvans, huge chunks in PACs), that sort of thing, From a statistical standpoint, twins are actually more dangerous than singles (look at the insurance rates). Mainly because if you lose an engine in a single, you are landing. If you lose an engine in a twin, you need to do everything right in order not to crash. There's an old joke that goes: Oh, no! We lost an engine! How far do you thing the other one will take us? All the way to the crash site. Also, engine failures are pretty rare. Most general aviation crashes (not just jumping) are pilot error. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." 20. They were on "Vendor Row" at Summerfest. They had working models and said that they would be available for sale mid-August. Nice guy. The Ion seems to be pretty nice. 21. Two guys out canoeing, see a "foot" sticking out of a beaver dam. Turns out to be a prosthetic leg. The owner lost it while canoeing a month or so ago. The owner had put a "lost" ad up on CL, so the guys were able to get it back to him. 22. Thanks for setting the record straight. Absolutely amazing stunt. I do have one question, though. 23. No, how about "corrupt cop"? I asked this before, and you posted a long diatribe touting the bravery of a couple cops who had a fake bomb tossed in their van (they didn't know the bomb was fake, but their bravery was real - but that has nothing to do with this). One more time - The incidents in Chicago, Cincinnati, Minneapolis, South Charleston and Miami were all "bad" shoots. The cop in each incident was way out of line, and either has been or should be charged criminally. But in each case, the cop claimed to be "threatened". And that he acted properly. As they always do. And before the proliferation of video cameras, they were almost always believed. How many cops have been charged in the last couple years? How many have been charge in the previous 20? 30? 40? Do you think that any of those incidents would have resulted in anything other than a "clean shoot" declaration without the video? 24. Well, keep in mind that analog, mechanical altimeters can still fail. And batteries dying isn't the only way a digital can fail. You say "189 main, 165 pilot." Is the 165 your "stepping out of the shower" weight? Then your actual exit weight will be more. You might be a bit surprised how much more. I was. I went 155 stepping out of the shower, and with a 190 main and fully geared up, I was just under 190. 1:1 is still a good wingloading though, presuming you are on an appropriate canopy type (non-elliptical). 25. Thief (they called him a pickpocket) steals phone from a group of women on a beach. They were somewhat suspicious, and when they realized a phone was missing, went after him. One was an off-duty cop. In a bikini.
