But... But... But... That doesn't sound good. That doesn't take the quote out of context to try to support an irrational point of view. It was said a page or two back that there's a 'belief' that climate change is bullshit, done to take advantage and make money. No science, no evidence,, no supporting data, no nothing. Just a 'belief'. Attack the scientists, attack the data, try to pretend that it's not happening. But there's no actual data that contradicts the findings that it's real, it's happening and we are in the process of destroying ourselves. The level of denial is frightening. -
So why doesn't Barr release the report? If it was all 'fake' and it 'exonerates' Trump, you'd think he'd want to have it public to show how innocent he, how he did nothing wrong. Kinda funny how the Mueller team was incredibly silent during the entire process of the investigation. No leaks whatsoever from them, only one statement that a story 'was not accurate'. And now, when Barr & Trump & friends are saying how there's nothing in it, they are saying that those statements aren't quite accurate. And, of course, Giuliani is railing against those 'sneaky leakers.' That in itself gives those leaks a lot more credibility.

Oh yeah. I understand how it can happen. If the recent posts about the owner are correct, he didn't like the idea that he now HAD TO wear a bailout rig while doing acro. So the idea that he'd get an I&R done 'every so often' wouldn't surprise me in any way. I've personally never been present at the DZ when the FAA showed up to do a ramp check. At my original DZ (Wolf River Skydivers), they only showed up once in the 10 years I was part of the DZ. I just find it amusing as all hell that the FBI gave Cooper an 'illegal' rig. Part of me wonders if they knew about it and did it on purpose, so that they could 'stack on' a couple more charges. I doubt it, it's far, far more likely that they simply didn't know enough about the gear to realize it.

Yeah, I still wonder about the case from time to time. I just couldn't stand the garbage being spewed in here. I'd pop back in and read whatever was current, but it never changed. I wasn't terribly surprised to see the back-biting and bickering start up almost immediately. I was half expecting Meso to go "Well, we tried. It was a mistake" and lock it up again. Folks like you, Sluggo, Ckret, SafecrackPLF, and a lot of others cared about data, real information. Unfortunately, too many had an agenda. Simply promoting their version of the story. And going after anyone who had any data that contradicted it. One very simple fact about investigation (of any kind) is that valid data has to be accounted for. You can't simply disregard data that doesn't support your hypothesis. You have to account for the discrepancy somehow. Toss in the variability of the data and the uncertainty of what is real and what is false and I don't see the case ever being solved. One bit of info that I learned since the unlock is that the Pioneer rig was also a bailout rig. Not a sport rig, as was surmised back when I was reading everything. Was that figured out before the thread was locked? I find it super amusing (as I noted above) that nobody, including Cooper, realized that they gave him 2 bailout rigs, one airworthy reserve, and one training dummy reserve. He couldn't have used the good reserve for anything, except cutting it up and using the lines for whatever purpose he had. Also, the fact that (presuming the pic posted of the Packing Data Card is correct) the Pioneer rig was out of date by a couple months. May 21 to Nov 24 is a lot more than 120 days (it was 120 in 1971, right?).

Green new deal equals magical thinking
wolfriverjoe replied to brenthutch's topic in Speakers Corner
There's a big (HYOOOOOOOOGE) difference between the 'end of the world' and the 'tipping point' (Point of no return). One of the really 'fun' parts about the tipping point is that we likely won't know when we reach it. Not until we're well past it and it's way too late. -

No. Try doing some research before making foolish and blatantly false statements like this. Unless you are just trolling again. -
Should Nuclear be a part of the clean energy strategy?
wolfriverjoe replied to airdvr's topic in Speakers Corner
Well, if the idiotic ban on reprocessing nuke waste was lifted, something like half of the waste would be taken care of. TMI & Chernobyl were operator error. Modern designs have reduced the chances of those types of accidents by a huge degree. Fukushima was a tsunami. Not putting reactors where that sort of thing is likely is a good idea. I know there's not any place immune from natural disasters, but site selection is important. There's a partially completed reactor site 'somewhere out west' that was stopped when they realized they were building directly on top of a fault line. I only know this because I've seen vid of BASE guys jumping into the unfinished cooling tower. -
Don't look at the source. Just read the story and try to decide if it's real or fake. https://politics.theonion.com/trump-vows-extensive-search-to-find-new-dhs-director-wi-1833895329

How long should it take to get on a load?
wolfriverjoe replied to ColoradoJones's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
A few thoughts: How many other students are there? Lots? A couple? Are they having the same experiences? How many newer jumpers (students who got licensed last year)? Did they go through anything similar? Don't forget that tandems are a big source of income. Without them, a lot of DZs simply close. So, for early in the season, bumping students to bring in a bunch of cash that is probably short right now is somewhat understandable. But I agree that the 'next load' thing is really frustrating and, IMO, wrong. If, as I noted above, they were putting out all the tandems they could to generate cash flow to get the season going, they should have told you so. If they knew (or even could make a reasonable guess) that it was going to be that sort of day, I would think they should have told you so when you called before you came out. Something like: "It's going to be really busy today. We have a bunch of tandems scheduled, and we are likely to get some walk ons. We want to take those first, so you may get bumped a few times before you can get up. You may not even get up at all." Sure, that's going to be 'un-fun' news, both to give and to receive. But that would have let you know the situation before you got the sitter, drove out, sat there, ect. Some people don't like to do that. Some DZOs don't want to tell people not to come out. Some people simply don't like telling bad news. Personally, I would rather both hear or tell 'less than great' truths than 'comfortable lies' (both before you headed out and while you were sitting). I would suggest talking to the 'chief instructor' (if there is such a person) or the DZO. It sounds like this is really your only choice nearby, so try not to 'burn bridges' when you do so. Maybe approach it along the lines of: "It was really frustrating to see all the loads going up without me on them. Did you expect that many tandems? I understand that they are important, but it would have been nice if you had let me know it was going to be that busy. If I had known it was going to be that long of a wait, and had known in advance, I might have picked a less busy day to come out." Don't throw blame around, ask how to keep it from happening again in the future. Don't express it in terms of what they did, go with what you were seeing. -
Work with him on what? Border wall? Losing trade war? Killing Obamacare? What has he actually proposed that is in any way in line with what the Ds want? And I seem to remember the Rs openly stating that their objective was to oppose any and everything Obama wanted to do.

Green new deal equals magical thinking
wolfriverjoe replied to brenthutch's topic in Speakers Corner
Exactly. The tech is advancing at a very high rate. In part because of demand. Large scale storage is a major component of making intermittent sources (wind & solar are two) much more viable. It's also the key to 'peak shaving', what I understand is leveling out demand. Excess capacity at low demand times (night) gets stored, filling in capacity needs when demand is high. A steady demand is probably the biggest way to make electricity cheaper. And the thought that 'electric cars are just for urban commutes' isn't really that far off the mark. Not necessarily true, given the advances in tech, but as far as the needs & demands of consumers. How many peoples primary needs could/would be met by a fairly short range car? City commuters have the 'advantage' of stop & go traffic during rush hour (stop & go recycles the energy and extends the range quite a lot). Personally, I have a 2 hour drive to the DZ. Other than that, it's just around town. I am toying around with the idea of an electric motorcycle (the new KTMs are pretty cool). It would only be used in the warm weather, so cold battery life wouldn't be an issue. While the range isn't very far, it would suit my needs quite adequately. I think autonomous is closer than you think. They're already using it quite a bit on 'off road' situations. Big open pit mines are one. The big dump trucks are going 'auto' already. I've heard arguments that Artificial Intelligence is a long way off, so Autonomous Driving is too. While I agree that real AI is a long way off (it's hard to develop AI when nobody can really define "intelligence" properly), the level of AI needed to drive a car is pretty low. Teenagers, drunks, distracted people (eating, texting, all the other crap you see people doing while driving) are all capable of driving fairly well. IIRC, even today's AD cars have a lower accident rate than humans. The pedestrian fatality in AZ made headlines, but would a real person have been able to avoid that person? And it seems like the tech to avoid that accident was in the car, but not turned on to reduce hard stops (and bouncing the passengers around). -

While swapping batteries sounds good in theory, the reality is that the condition of the packs can vary quite a bit. It would suck to swap out a really good, nearly new pack to one that was old and on it's 'last legs'. Alternatively, it would be really nice (and cost saving) to swap out an old pack that was failing, and get a practically new one. An alternative to that is to have the charging stations run batteries or capacitors. Charge them up at night when demand is low, supply is high and cost is cheap. Use the stored energy to charge up the cars during the day. Large, heavy duty capacitors are quickly becoming a good alternative to batteries for some applications. -

wolfriverjoe replied to kallend's topic in Speakers Corner
I did. You are making excuses for the idiocy he spouted. Saying that 'he was just kidding' when he claimed that "The noise from wind turbines causes cancer." The rest of the time you "dismiss what he says". IOW - Ignore it. And you still haven't answered the question: Are all the other stupid and ignorant claims Trump has made hyperbole? Is he joking or does he expect the idiots who support him to believe it? -
It's a dark time for everyone. Except maybe for the KKK & American Nazis. Bowing and scraping to murderous dictators, record deficits and debt just around the corner, a trade war that we are losing rather badly, destroying relationships with long-term allies (while, again, sucking up to murderous dictators), the list goes on and on. The problem is that he has conned a lot of people into believing that what he's doing is good.

wolfriverjoe replied to kallend's topic in Speakers Corner
Well, I don't know if he actually believes it himself or not. But I'm pretty sure he expects other people to believe it. He's a con artist. Pure and simple. As are the rest of his minions. He got banks to believe he'd pay them back. He got 'students' to believe he'd teach them. He got investors to believe he'd make money... For them. In every case, he took the money and screwed over the people who he got it from. And a lot more in the process (employees, vendors, customers, ect) It's abundantly clear that some people are dumb and gullible enough to believe the crap he spouts (as hard as that is to believe). Apparently, he's also conned people who aren't quite gullible enough to believe the garbage he spouts to try to convince other people that 'he didn't really mean it.' -
Green new deal equals magical thinking
wolfriverjoe replied to brenthutch's topic in Speakers Corner
Oh, please. It did a lot more than that. It made for hyooooooge deficits and national debt in a few years. But since 'he won't be around for that', Trump doesn't care. -
Very short. But infections were usually fatal, surgery didn't happen, any complications during childbirth and the mother was toast, and something like 1 in 3 kids died before puberty. Deaths from 'nitrate poisoning' or cancer caused by nitrates was probably very, very low on the list.

wolfriverjoe replied to kallend's topic in Speakers Corner
So, to ask again: How do we tell what's 'Hyperbole' and what he really means? I honestly don't care what HRC says anymore. She's not president. But Trump has said dozens, hundreds, maybe thousands (not exaggerating) of things like this. "I know this, I know better than anyone". Health care, military, trade, diplomacy, border security, everything. Is it all hyperbole? Is everything he says "in jest"? -
No-one knows <insert topic here> better than Trump
wolfriverjoe replied to kallend's topic in Speakers Corner
So how can you tell what he really means and what's hyperbole? Honest question. He spews this sort of thing just about everyday. He's an 'expert' in everything. Was it hyperbole when he said he knew more about Daesh (ISIL) that the generals? Or more about the border than INS? How do you know what is real and what isn't? Does he know the difference?
