Stall point/brake line length
Hooknswoop replied to flyngsquirrl's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
The canopy flys exactly the same on windy days as it does on no wind days. The difference is your ground speed. Derek -

Stall point/brake line length
Hooknswoop replied to flyngsquirrl's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
As long as you are getting the full flare out of the canopy, they aren't too long. If you have too, pulling down the tail a little in the front risers is better than not being to flare all the way. On smaller canopies, the control range is smaller so you can have long lowers without running out of flare. Derek -
Airline jet fly under during freefall
Hooknswoop replied to dixieskydiver's topic in Safety and Training
Ya, I'm sure he is going to drop everything else and address skydiving. Again, you are over estimating skydiving's value to anyone other than skydivers. If the FAA thinks there is a safety issue between skydiving and the airlines and GA, they aren't going to make changes that restrict/inconvenience the airlines or GA, they'll just restrict skydiving, making it more expensive and difficult. They would probably just require jumpships to have TCAS where you can see other aircraft on the screen. I got to fly a Premier the other day that had it, very cool. Derek -
The first one, a Skycrane, can have a cargo pod fitted, but not likely. I don't know if there are any flying around in the cargo configuration. Could be an S-76 http://www.sikorsky.com/details/0,3036,CLI1_DIV69_ETI266,00.html Could be an S-58 Choctaw/Seahorse/Seabat (H-34) http://www.helis.com/inc/dibu.php?m=1&s=../h/h34_3.jpg Derek

petition for exemption to the 120 day reserve repack cycle denied

Um, OK, let me be more specific. What solution are you refering to? What freedom are you refering to? What attitude problems are you refering to? Derek -

I'm not sure I understand what you are saying. Derek -
petition for exemption to the 120 day reserve repack cycle denied
Hooknswoop replied to jsaxton's topic in Gear and Rigging
Right, I can safely say that for too many rigs, extending the re-pack cycle would be a bad idea. I don't need to hear what happens in other countries, I see the condition of rigs after 120 days and 180-days would just be worse. Derek -
Airline jet fly under during freefall
Hooknswoop replied to dixieskydiver's topic in Safety and Training
Skydiving is no more than a nusance to the FAA. They are not going to restrict airspace around DZ's, giving skydiving priority over other GA operations. Derek -
Thanks to everyone that replied. This has been a very thought provoking thread for me. I always thought I knew what my responsibilities were as an Instructor. I always thought that they weren't personal, but genereric to the rating. I realize now, they aren't. Maybe USPA should put in writing exactly what an Instructor's responsibilities are. Derek

Airline jet fly under during freefall
Hooknswoop replied to dixieskydiver's topic in Safety and Training
If you convince the FAA that in order to maintain an acceptable level of safety, the airspace around a DZ needs to be treated as a rEstricted Area during Parachute Operations, they will shut down skydiving. Given the choice between open airspace or skydiving, skydiving will lose. Derek -
It has been proven again and again that you will go for your main in that situation. Derek

petition for exemption to the 120 day reserve repack cycle denied
Hooknswoop replied to jsaxton's topic in Gear and Rigging
If you think I, or almost any other rigger, rigs for the money, you have no idea what we do and how much we get paid. I would like to hear from riggers in Countries with 180+ day re-pack cycles how often rigs get brought to them for repairs or to get something looked at before the reserve is due. That is rare in my experience in the U.S. You think what I am seeing is specualtaion, but what a rigger in another country is seeing are facts? I'm not sure why you seem to be taking offense to this. "This one measured 9 feet, 1 inch - 97 lbs." Sounds like it is to me. Derek

What do you think the differences (if any) in responsibility they are between an AFFI and a Coach? Derek

Ya, the DCS-P100, http://www.megapixel.net/reviews/sony-p100/p100-gen.php Derek

Limit it to the training, jump and post-jump areas. It would be my pleasure. C'mon up and we'll hit the slopes too. Derek

Should an AFFI lose their rating if they 'drop' a student?
Hooknswoop replied to Hooknswoop's topic in Instructors
The course I saw, at least one candidate passed that was unable to catch the evaluator on their back. I have seen video of AFFI's not catching students which fortunately pulled. It happens. Derek -

Airline jet fly under during freefall
Hooknswoop replied to dixieskydiver's topic in Safety and Training
"that jet reaaaaaallly shouldn't have been flying that low through our airspace" Sounds like you think you are the master of the sky, or at least own it. Take responsibility for your actions. When you are wrong admit it, learn from it, and move on. Derek -
