  1. I recently removed a Cypres with 2 180-bends in both the cables. The excess cable was stowed in the channel on the back pad with no excess stowed in the cypres pouch per the manual. Is this the type of installation in question and the bends that SSK wants to inspect? Derek
  2. Right, the DZO could have called the FAA, the police, USPA, etc. He gave the guy a chance and a break by dealing with it on a local level and not involving the authorities. Does he/she have the authority to confiscate it? I don't think so, but the alternative is to call someone with the authority to confiscate the gear. So, givent he choice, I would think the jumper would prefer the DZO didn't call the authorities. Sounds like someone packed the reserve illegally, the jumper with the rig got caught, time to man up. Derek
  3. Just use 1000 lb Vectran or Dacron, replace it exactly as it is on there now. Remember to leave extra as finger-trapping will take up length. Replacing the lowers is easy to do. Derek
  4. Not in the US, the FAR's are very clear about this: (b) No person may pack, maintain, or alter any main parachute of a dual-parachute system to be used for intentional parachute jumping in connection with civil aircraft of the United States unless that person— (1) Has an appropriate current certificate issued under this subpart; (2) Is under the supervision of a current certificated parachute rigger; (3) Is the person making the next parachute jump with that parachute in accordance with §105.43(a) of this chapter; or (4) Is the parachutist in command making the next parachute jump with that parachute in a tandem parachute operation conducted under §105.45(b)(1) of this chapter. 5. $243/year, full coverage through Progressive for an 04 CBR600RR. Derek
  6. Which is why you aren't stable. You had a reference that you were moving in the tunnel and were trying to correct for that movement. In free-fall, you would have just moved without knowing it. Moving makes you move, holding still makes you hold still. Look at good tunnel flyers, they don't move because they don't move. Skydivers think they fall straight down, until they get in the tunnel and realize how much they actually move around the sky. The tunnel is almost the same as free-fall. Derek
  7. You scared the hell out of me, don't ever do that again! Derek
  8. From tunnelflight.com: "2-Ways Once a flyer demonstrates proficiency as a solo flyer in their chosen orientation, they will need to then demonstrate the same stability and control with another flyer. The second flyer needs to already be signed off to fly with multiple flyers." Derek
  9. "PSSSTT!! Wanna buy some tunnel time?" Thanks for all your help Matt. Derek
  10. Thanks for flying with us so much. You and Dan are fun to have around. WE are working on a system for holding the dry-erase boards in place. I'd like to be there for the 1-hour attempt, just in case you need a break Derek
  11. I've updated and fixed all the links on my rigging page since I can no longer edit the post here on dz.com. Derek
  12. You da man! Thanks to Slotperfet too. Derek
  13. Try wearing the leg straps a little looser, so you can adjust how you sit in the harness under canopy. 80% of jumpers wear their leg straps too tight. Derek
  14. It's ok JP, I need some vibes too. The girls down stairs are sooooo mean to us delicate little boys.
  15. Aren't both of those a result of the line attachment points of the Raven reserves and not the reserve deployment system? Derek
  16. Yes, I don't see any problems connecting it to a cable housing. If you fire your reserve without deploying or chopping your main, the RSL won't do anything, connected or not. Even with your Skyhook, it won't cause any problems with a partial malfunction or a total if it is connected to a cable housing and not a main riser. Nice work in the tunnel BTW. Derek
  17. I had assumed the shackle would prevent the 3-ring from working too as was surprised when I couldn't get it to jam, on the ground. Right, the large ring acts as another guide ring. To clarify, I do think it could jam, but it isn't guaranteed to jam like it looks like it would. Derek
  18. Not as scary on the surface as you might think. I couldn't get the 3-ring to malfunction with a brass (larger than the SS version) RSL shackle attached to the larger 3-ring on a mini-ring system. Even better, I couldn't get it to malfunction when it was connected to the middle ring of a mini-ring system, with the bonus that the RSL would activate the reserve with it connected there. I'm sure it could cause it to malfunction or delay the release, but with a bunch of attempts, I couldn't make it happen on the ground. It is better to connect it to the cutaway housing that to tuck it behind the mud flap. It can and probably will come out and flop around when just tucked away. Connected to the cutaway housing keeps it secured and out of the way. Below the surface, the jumper's lack of gear knowledge and willingness to make gear choices is a very bad combination. This jumper needs some gear education, preferably from a rigger. Derek
  19. From his post: "Tonight tdog and I did some AFF-I pretraining with Brad Cole and Chris [Gray] (fill in last name here if you know it) at Skyventure Colorado." All but one of the SVCO tunnel rats are (or in my case, was an AFFI/E) AFFI's. Derek
  20. So, once again, USPA's solution to not enough Instructor's- make it easier to become an Instructor. Is USPA looking out for it's member's needs (ensuring well-trained, quality Instructors for it's members)? or the DZO's needs (more, cheap labor)? Why not address why there are not enough Instructors? Pay. Benefits. Treatment. Working conditions. A new AFFI makes just as much as an AFFI with 500 AFF jumps and years of experience. How does lowering the standards to pass the AFFI course serve the student/member? How does it serve the DZO? How does making anyone with a D license a Coach serve the needs of the student/member? How does it serve the needs of the DZO? Once again, the member loses when USPA chooses between it's members and the DZO's. Derek
  21. SO, what you are saying is that whether or not it is an alteration depends on if it is listed in specifications that riggers do not have access to? A manufacturer could simply say that it is an alteration? Doesn't AC-105-2C give the authority for a rigger to determine compatability of TSO'd components? One manufacturer has told me that AC-105-2C is not an FAR and only guidence. This is because if it was law, then there are some reserves TSO'd under C-23d that could not be assembgled with some containers assembled under TSO-C23b. Derek
