Okay, I understand what you're asking now. Just keep in mind that doing the math yourself based on a forecast winds aloft will not be nearly as accurate as just asking the pilot for a ground speed. Winds aloft forecasts are just that...forecasts. They are not actual. GPS ground speed is the real deal and will be much more accurate for you. -Dave Skydive Radio

TAS is not really the issue when talking about exit separation. Distance traveled across the ground is what you need to be concerned with and of course that varies greatly depending on the upper winds. In the Otter on a no wind day you are looking at a ground speed of somewhere around 90 knots. Can't speak first hand for other aircraft but would expect most of the normal skydiving fleet to fall somewhere in that same range with the exception of the Casa and King Air which would be a bit faster. After reading Bill Von Novak's article on exit separation and speaking with him on the phone, it is my understanding that 1000 feet of separation across the ground is adequate for average sized groups. The following chart shows the amount of time necessary to achieve that 1000 feet of separation for a given ground speed. I've attached it as a word doc as well. To Achieve 1000 of Horizontal Separation Ground Speed in Knots/Seconds Between Groups 120/5 115/6 110/6 105/6 100/6 95/7 90/7 85/7 80/8 75/8 70/9 65/10 60/10 55/11 50/12 45/14 40/15 35/17 30/20 25/24 20/30 For the last several months I have been making a jump run announcement that includes the current ground speed and the necessary time between groups. If they have runway lights (I'm not sure if they do) I would be willing to stay sober and fly a night load but there are other considerations. For one the management would need to say it's okay and provide a briefing. Also, strobes would have to be rounded up for the jumpers. -Dave Skydive Radio

The problem is that without transparency there is no way for the general membership to make an informed voting decision. Sure I can read the minutes and see what the final decision on an issue is, but if I don't know which members were pushing for or against that decision how do I know who is representing my interests? I agree that sometimes closed doors are necessary but the current EC has taken it too far, especially when ND's and RD's are not even involved in the decision making process on important issues. -Dave Skydive Radio -

I once watched a Skyvan land at a boogie with one engine feathered. About 10 minutes later manifest announced that the Skyvan was down due to a "bird" going through the right engine. Later that day an aircraft mechanic friend of mine said lets go look at the Skyvan. As we were walking up to it he said "well that wasn't a bird strike". I asked how he could tell and he said "well...do you see any blood or feathers?....no?....do you see that window that's missing right in front of the right engine intake? Skydive Radio -
The manual is required to be in the aircraft during operation so unless you can find someone with more manuals than airplanes...... Skydive Radio

Skydive Chicago's facilities are the best in the world bar none. I have traveled to almost all the big dropzones in the United States and SDC is truly in a class of it's own. Driving onto the property feels more like entering a state park than an airport. Activities like swimming, canoing, kayaking, hiking, biking, sand volleyball, and horseback riding will keep the non-skydiving members of your family as entertained as the jumpers. The laid back friendly vibe on the dropzone is fantastic. My first experience at SDC in 1998 was very welcoming. My wife and I didn't know anyone there, but as soon as we walked in the door we were given the grand tour by the owner and 20 minutes later were on organized multi-point 20-ways that built and invited to dinner that night. Skydive Chicago somehow manages to pull off a small family dropzone feel in a big shiny package. The Nelson family has built a true skydiving paradise. Go to the rest, then come to the best. Skydive Chicago rocks!
