  1. We are very excited about this interview. Mr. Kittinger has been on our guest wish list since Skydive Radio started. Many thanks to peregrinerose for putting us in contact with him. Of course questions from dz.comers are welcome. I will start a separate thread for those right away. -Dave Skydive Radio
  2. I am trying to contact Capt. Joe Kittenger for a Skydive Radio interview. If anyone has an email or phone number could you please pass it on to me via pm or an email at skydiveradio@gmail.com. Thanks so much. -Dave Skydive Radio
  3. Haven't jumped the DC9 yet but when we did the 727 it was the first time I exited an airplane and immediately started to slow down. Pretty cool sensation. Also, if you exit facing the relative wind and hit a hard track you can almost hold altitude with the airplane for a few seconds. Very cool. A good wingsuit flyer could certainly gain altitude on it. 12. Again, a few inches is all it takes for a pilot chute to sneak out. If that jumper is wearing their seatbelt things could get really ugly for everyone in a hurry. There's an argument being made here about the added drag of the door being open which is minimal. Now imagine 120-200 sq feet of nylon in tow. For this reason when I'm flying the door stays closed until seatbelts are removed. I know it gets hot back there in the summer but safety needs to come over comfort and it doesn't take that long to get to 1000 feet. Once you're there remove your seatbelts and open the door as wide as you want. Skydive Radio
  13. Bryan Burke was our guest on Skydive Radio this week. If you would like to hear a more in depth discussion of the topics in this thread you can listen to it here. Skydive Radio 85 Skydive Radio
  14. If the door is even cracked a couple inches it's enough for a hackey handle to get under it. If a pilot chute gets outside and that jumper is still wearing their seatbelt everybody dies. When you're flying with me the door needs to be completely closed until seatbelts are removed. After that I don't really care. -Dave Skydive Radio
  15. Todays aero-news special feature podcast is with the president of Viking Air. The conversation is about the Twin Otter 400. You can listen to it here http://www.aero-news.net/podcasts/casts/3/ann-special-feature-2007-04-16.mp3 Skydive Radio

  20. Maybe at the extreme high end but that is not anywhere near an average airline salary. Most people will start with the regionals at somewhere around 30k and go up slowly from there. As for the rest of this argument, as a skydiver and jump pilot I see both sides. I love my job, I love being around skydivers all day and I love the Twin Otter. Because of that I don't mind not making much money. It's enough to survive, I like my boss and the people I work with, and I look forward to going to work every day so I can't complain. On the other hand, I've always found it interesting that the pilots make less than most everyone else on the dropzone. Not only do they have the most responsibility but they also have the most invested to get to their position by far. My S/L rating cost me around $500. My tandem rating cost me around $1200. I bought all the equipment I needed to shoot and edit tandem videos for around $5000. All 3 of those activities pay much better than flying. I hate to even think about what I have tied up into flying ratings to get where I'm at now but it is well in excess of $30,000 plus years of my time and thats being conservative. I agree with the original poster in that dropzones would be able to retain their pilots longer if they paid more. At the same time, I don't see myself leaving my job anytime soon because I enjoy it so much. At some point I will have to move on and when that happens it will only be because of money. But I have a feeling that 20 years from now if I'm in that illusive "$350,000" airline job I will look back on my time spent here flying jumpers as the best job I ever had. -Dave Skydive Radio
  21. Then on exit, make sure you're in the first group and totally ignore the green light even though the pilot has gps and has flown 35 loads that day. Spot for your group only, don't worry about the 20 other people ahead of you...they can pull high. Skydive Radio
