  1. What exactly does smoking say about someone's character? Throwing one's butts out the car window says something about one's character. Inflicting one's smoke on non-smokers says something about one's character. But smoking itself? I think it says a lot more about someone's biochemistry than it does about one's character. Did anyone read the link I posted? On another note, our office administrator, who is my age, just had a small, cancerous tumor removed from her lung. It was only luck that they found it--she was not symptomatic and she has no known risk factors for lung cancer, except possible radon exposure. She has never, ever smoked even one cigarette. My grandmother, on the other hand, has smoked occasionally, and lived for more than 50 years in a house with a heavy smoker who had a heart attack after he quit smoking and put on 50 pounds. He's dead. She just turned...it's either 99 or a 100, I can't remember, and her physical health is perfect. I think that cigarettes are highly overrated as a cause of lung cancer, and that it is more a combination of genes, diet and exposure to radon that we need to worry about. I'm not saying that there are not risks from smoking, not by any means, but I do think we give it far more importance than it deserves as a cause for cancer. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. 2. My only response to you, Jeffrey, based on this and other threads, is that I'm glad I don't know you, I don't want to know you, and I'm very relieved not to have friends like you. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb
  3. Oh dear. I guess all those self-help books are wrong--you know, the ones that tell me that to be liked, appreciated and understood, I must adapt to the style of the person I'm addressing? I'm sending all my copies back today for a full refund. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb
  4. That's awesome. Congratulations, and all good wishes for many years of sobriety to come. It's the best gift you can ever give to yourself and those around you. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb
  5. Good for you. Why do you care? I answered the question Night Jumper asked. I didn't volunteer to address your sarcasm. Are you on a quest to save the world from nicotine? Perhaps you should read the link I posted. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb

  8. For me, that would've made the entire incident worthwhile. He's one of the nicest guys I've ever known. I'm really glad you're okay. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb

    What if?

I suspect that when they run the vehicle, they will want to be sure that you're driving it legally and that it isn't stolen property. Unless you're able to prove to them at the scene that you have the right to be in possession of the vehicle, they will seek third-party confirmation (i.e., from the owner of the vehicle) that you are an authorized driver. And if they want to fuck with you, they'll do it anyway. On the other hand, using "due discretion" is not the same as a prohibition. I'd get some clarification on that, if I were you. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb

  12. That is the coolest comic, especially since I was bitchin' about "forte" just a few weeks ago in another thread. Oh Vinny, whatever would I do without you? rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb
  13. Allow me to tell you how much I hate chopping liver.... I chop raw, frozen liver for Baby every single day. She eats dry cat food and liver; she won't eat wet cat food. She got a taste for liver when she was a sick kitten recovering from feline infectious enteritis, and she has never looked back. Sometimes when I'm sitting here, she sits on my shoulder. Typing annoys her. Now and again, I read the threads to her. She thinks the lot of us are whacked, some more so than others. Out of the mouth of Baby... rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb
  14. Baby, I've been meaning to talk to you about something... Apostrophes. 18. Jeez. Yeah, that's it. Jeez. LisaMarie, I don't know who those three guys are, but I bet they're all legally blind without their glasses. And they've surely never seen me without my clothes. As for the rest of the thread...I let Baby read it, and she says that all of you are deluded and my one redeeming virture is that I'm a pretty fine chopper of raw, frozen liver. I wish you all a happy, safe and healthy 2006. And thank you for the lovely thread. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb

  21. I started smoking at a very early age--about the time my thyroid started to fail. When I became symptomatic with Hashimoto's thyroiditis, I was successful in quitting during a couple of the longer hyper episodes, but both times (once after 4 years and again after 2.5 years), I started again. The last time I spontaneously quit was last year when the doctor put me on 25 ug Cytomel along with Synthroid. That lasted for three months. She then lowered the dose, and I immediately started smoking again. http://www.boston.com/news/nation/articles/2003/11/12/nicotine_studied_as_treatment_for_brain_disorders/ I do also note that I have much less desire to smoke when my dopamine levels are high. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. 25. I don't know. I know you're planning to get an older animal, but I've raised cats with dogs and rats with ferrets and cats (funny, very funny--rats will tease the cats mercilessly), among other odd combinations. I know a guy whose Rottie raised a kitten. I suspect a Husky puppy faced with a cat or kitten would knuckle under the same way every other dog does. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb
