Why some jumpers (me) don't take others (you) seriously.
RhondaLea replied to jimmyh's topic in BASE Jumping
This time, Jimmy, I agree with you. I'm not going to touch the issue of Clair, except to say the following: You know what I said in that thread, and you know what I've said to you privately, so you understand that my objection was not that you were teaching someone with no skydiving experience to base jump--that part I agree with for the reasons I gave you in the PM. I'm glad she's doing well at it, and that we don't have much longer to go before her 18th birthday. But as for the rest of it, there is no good argument that I can see against anything you've written. "Ethics" is what we do, not what we think. Exactly that, no more no less. A good attitude only counts if it is expressed in action, and trying to distinguish identical acts based on the attitude underlying them is ridiculous. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. I eat ice cream slightly less often than I drink beer. That would make it maybe 5 times a year. And that's only because it's difficult to find good creme brulee here in DeLand, so I eat Haagen Daas Creme Brulee ice cream instead. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. i've seen it too, and know a few who do that. They are too cheap or lazy to get a baby sitter. Idiots! I don't go to the movies, but I went when my daughter was young to take her. If there was a movie she wanted to see with an inappropriate rating, I learned the reason for the rating and made a decision. I usually decided she could see what she wanted. As I said above, she loved horror movies, and she fully understand the difference between the fantasy gore of movies and the real gore of a living creature who has met with an ill-fate. She learned this both from doing wildlife rehab with me and on the dropzone. As for sex, I started educating my daughter about sex at a very early age. She asked questions, I answered, without any embarrassment or stuttering. When she was four, she found a copy of A Child is Born in the store, and she asked for it, and we read it together. She has a very healthy attitude about sex, in spite of the crap we get from the media in all its forms. In another time, children were spared nothing. They saw everything. The only thing that's bad today is we don't talk to them about any of it; we just let them find out on their own and figure it out as best they can. The result is a lot of fucked up and crazy kids. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb

The first time I jumped my own packjob, I forgot to turn on my CYPRES. The first time I jumped my daughter's packjob, I scratched and let my ex-boyfriend jump the rig. He lived. But it was scary. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb

You couldn't possibly understand, it requires a penis! Oh no, I don't think so. I think it merely requires a level of maturity I can't begin to downgrade to. I'll tell you what. I'm all for "a wide variety of experience." But when you're treating other human beings as nothing more than meat, possessions, prizes, something is off. Way off. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb -

My attitude is.... how is this my fault? I don't understand all the replies in this thread. You mentioned the tapes, you mentioned the pitfalls, you gave her the choice, she said yes. It wasn't your fault, and she had no business writing you a nasty note, when she didn't live up to her responsibilities. Furthermore, ratings aside, 12-year olds can handle people getting the legs blown off. I never kept my daughter from watching anything, but we did talk about it either during or after. She loved horror movies, and I couldn't stand them, but I would take her anyway, even though it meant a lot of lost sleep for me (nightmares). rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. How was she disrespectful of her body? And even if she was (but she wasn't), it is her body, and if she chooses to treat it disrespectfully, it does not confer on another the right to do the same. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb -

Sorry. I googled and read about...I dunno...it felt like fifty but was probably only fifteen articles about this topic. The bit about the possible scholarship money was in one of the articles that I didn't post, but this article was the most complete of all of them. Apparently, because she placed third, she can't go to the state tournament, which means that she won't have a chance at the scholarship money. And for some reason, this is the last year she's allowed to compete. I'm a little fuzzy today. Sorry. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb
