BASE is a culture of rational anarchists. If someone fucks up in the meting out of "justice," you can be sure that they too will face consequences for their failure to make a good decision. Everyone is a guardian, so everyone will guard themselves and each other, and wrong decisions will be met with appropriate disapprobation. If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb

Those are some pretty broad and sweeping statements. Perhaps you should do a more thorough examination of my 676 (now 677) posts, and get back to me with an exact ratio of flames to "other." Anyway, I'm glad for the opportunity to help bring you to the dark side. What this world needs is more needless flamers, especially those who totally ignore reality in posting. Welcome to our world. rl Edited to add: P.S. I would never flame Billy. I don't think I ever have in the ten years I've known him online (we finally met in person about three years ago). I was flaming the dumbass who thinks that upsetting children at Christmas is the right thing to do. If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb

It's human nature. Those who have little or no self-control try instead to control that which is outside themselves. rl Of all tyrannies, a tyranny exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end, for they do so with the approval of their own conscience. IMO putting your full name, address etc on a forum where illegal activites are discussed and planned (aka conspiring) is a poor idea. What part of that statement, exactly, is not a mere fact? It's not like we don't know that NPS is reading this board regularly just as they read BLINC. Well, you know there's nothing I like better than a good healthy debate, Nick.

Troy Loney hid. He did it for a number of years on rec.skydiving because he couldn't afford to voice his real opinion if he had any hope of continuing to work. He did reveal his identity to certain people, but not many. It was only after he died that most people knew who he was. The rest of the examples in my head are still living, so I can't trot them out for examination. Some of them trolled for the amusement of themselves and others, some just didn't want to have to deal with the real-world consequences of their opinions--not with other jumpers, but with employers and such. He didn't call you a criminal, Nick, and nothing he said about the potential consequences was untrue. I don't know why I'm defending the guy, except I've seen a lot of people like him, and they never hurt anybody or did any true harm. They just got a kick out of tweaking the rest of us with a little mystery, but it was never done in a cruel or evil way. (Yes, there are evil trolls, but those are not who I'm talking about.) Whatever. If it's really the case that everyone should be straightforward and in your face with their identity, then I guess it's time for Joy and Rick to publish the list in its entirety. Whaddya think? rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb

I read many of the other forums here. I'll just say that I'm taking everything you say with a grain of salt, based on your record. A posting record isn't the same as a skydiving record. Some of the finest skydivers I've ever known have also been some of the worst anonymous trolls. It's a meaningless comparison, unless someone is posting bs in the gear and rigging forum, rather than in the Bonfire or the Speaker's Corner. It's easy enough for j0nes to provide the credentials--to you or to someone else--to show good faith, but I'll bet you......the original post in the thread is sincere and the stated jump numbers are accurate. Either that or it's the ghost of Skinflicka. (Kidding, I'm kidding.) rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb

No. It's not interesting. It's just not nice. Christmas is for children, not for someone's stupid idea of a joke. Sheesh. rl, who does not celebrate Christmas or any other such holiday If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb

I don't know if anyone has noticed yet, but this is a two-year old thread. Edited to add: two and one-half years old. The "sponsored twins" are either dead or famous by now. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb

It was originally a post to AT. Sometimes stuff on usenet gets picked up by other sites. AT ain't what it used to be, but there are some diehards left, and this post is priceless. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb

But they always have the option to tack on a conspiracy charge or any one of several other charges, don't they? That's the worrisome part--not what they do, but what they can do. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb

I know plenty of people who still use cocaine. I don't know any who jump under the influence. I do know some people who jump under the influence of other things, but because they are always high or inebriated, they require a hit or a drink first thing in the morning just to be normal. It has nothing to do with being PC. It has everything to do with asking a question that has no relevance in this thread. The subject of drugs and skydiving has come up before, here and on usenet. If you wanted a serious answer, you'd search here or google for it. But this is just another instance of your trying to stir something up by being off-topic. Again. My kingdom for a killfile and a little self-restraint. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb

Have you ever eaten anything in freefall?
RhondaLea replied to Newbie's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
When I still worked in DeLand, one of the guys was getting his tandem rating, and I "volunteered" to be his dead weight. I always kept a bowl of Brach's cinnamon candies (later, other flavors, because skydivers are a whiny bunch who had no hesitation about complaining of the lack of variety), and on the second or third jump, he grabbed a few on the way out to the plane. After pitching the drogue, he made a big show of unwrapping the candy and sticking it in my mouth. The I/E came within an rch of not passing him because he said the prospective tandem master wasn't taking it all seriously enough. Somehow, IIRC, it was all my fault. Does that count? Be careful what you eat in freefall. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb -

I know your intentions are good also, but the day I withhold information is the day it's time to pack it in. IMO, certain kinds of censorship are good, but this isn't one of them. If the OP is determined to jump, she will jump anyway, so she might as well be as comfortable as possible. If she decides to take the advice not to jump, then there's still no reason to for her to suffer from both the cold and being on the ground. If someone asks me how to do something, and I know, I will tell them. I will also tell them why they may want to reconsider using that information. Incomplete knowledge is a dangerous thing; complete instructions, less so. Better that people should have access to all the tools at hand than leaving them with limited resources with which to create disaster. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. The following herbs combined work pretty well: marshmallow, ginger and cayenne pepper. You can buy these in capsule or liquid (extract) form. In addition, eating raw garlic cloves (cut the clove into quarters and swallow) is great for clearing congestion, particularly chest congestion, but don't expect a kiss pass. If you can get your order in quickly, SinusBuster works wonders for nasal congestion and just about everything else, but be warned: the first time you use it, it will take the top of your head off. I love the stuff, and I use it often. Even if I'm not sick, it clears my head when I'm tired. Finally, get some Earplanes to help avoid damage to your ears. That said, I still wouldn't jump if I were you. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb

Email the dz info@skydivedeland.com and ask for the housing list--most of the local skydiver rooms rent for $15-$20 per night, with discounts for longer stays; there are some local hotels and motels as well--and for the number of the DOTS shuttle. The shuttle will bring you to a hotel that is less than five miles from the dropzone and you can take a taxi (DeLand Taxi 386-734-8484) from there. The dropzone staff helps visiting skydivers make arrangements all the time. Use their knowledge to find the best accomodations for your budget, and for any other help you need. rl Edited to add: The bunkhouse is effectively a shack with a space heater and six bunks. It is right next to the showers. It's about one degree better than camping, but not much more than that. On the other hand, it's cheap. If you do decide to stay there, bring bedding. felating your car, nice Once a troll... At the very least, a troll needs to be able to spell. In the absence of good spelling and grammar, a troll post is a total waste of the time it takes to read it. rl P.S. Shannon, the next time you're in New Jersey, I'll call my mom and let her know you're dying for venison. Fortunately, I'm in Florida, and I won't have to see it or smell it. No. It isn't. No. You don't. Newbies do. Clever people do. Offensive people and genuine trolls do not. No. It hasn't. rl I want to clarify something. Trolling ones friends is a time-honored tradition, and I consider it to be humor. Trolling people unknown to one is...something else altogether, and it is generally not well-intended by the perpetrator. It's the difference between funny and irredeemably offensive. Shannon falls into the former category, along with most of the the wiseass monkeys who hang around the Bonfire. I'll leave it to your imagination to figure out who falls into the latter. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb

I can't imagine that dog tastes very good. Does it? I don't object to eating dog, although I couldn't eat one myself, anymore than I could eat snake, turtle (having had a collection of herps at one time, it would seem like cannibalism to me). Come to think of it, I have a very difficult time eating fowl as well. rl If you don't know where you're going, you should know where you came from. Gullah Proverb
