Exit Counts. A competition may be in order!
faulknerwn replied to WooHoo's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I always liked the CRW exit count - "Whirly Whirly chop chop!" -
We're having our Grand Re-opening boogie in Salado (just north of Austin) that weekend. Details at http://skydivetemple.com W

Line twists on reserves (newbie question)
faulknerwn replied to Orange1's topic in Safety and Training
The only time I take a delay to get to terminal is a CRW cutaway after a wrap. Most of the time I'll track off to clear airspace and make sure I'm far away from those crazy folks who just tried to kill me :-) That being said, approximately half of my 16 reserve rides have been at terminal velocity, and its not a big deal. Admittedly I'm not a 240 lb guy on a 113 reserve however.... I weigh 130 and my smallest reserve is a 120... W -
Smaller Canopy same loading...
faulknerwn replied to YISkyDive's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
Outside corners typically trim with inside toggle and outside front riser. We're actually in the process of switching from outside front riser to just using the outside B line. The B-line allows you to make your canopy sink without driving forward, -

When we build big canopy formations, we've gotten VERY detailed in engineering the formations. For the 70 way, we had a 160 (maybe a 176 I forget) up top piloting, with 2 176's next if I remember correctly. For the 85 way, they really felt we needed to speed up the base, so we had the top folks move up to 218 Lightnings. With a very small number of exceptions, everyone on the 85-way had a wing-loading between 1.3 and 1.375. We put all the big boys on big canopies up top and down the middle - i.e. the base. That's because we wanted the formation flying fast. Just like in freefall, if the center/base of the formation is flying slow. the people on teh outside are going to be in a world of trouble.. All of the tiny people like me, go on the outside of the formation because our canopies at the same wing-loadings fly slower. The 85-way was frigging smoking with the engineering design this year. You can look at the pictures and see that our little canopies on the outside are actually trailing behind the formation a touch because the base is so fast. Big canopies will fly faster than smaller canopies of the same type at the same wing-loading. -
I'm the opposite - I MUCH MUCH prefer rear riser stalls over toggle stalls. With rear riser stalls, your canopy just bedsheets instead of folding up, and it seems much more controllable. I know of one CRW team that gets together after jumps and does rear riser stalls facing each other nose to nose - they actually managed to dock one time in full-blown stalls! Rear riser stalls just seem more fun and less violent to me... W

Yep. He'll fly during the week with just 4 jumpers (and its WAY faster than a Cessna!). He's actively building new stuff (the swoop ditch went in last week) and growing the business.

That'd be it!

June 9-11. Its a fun boogie - no seriousness allowed :-)

Its 30 minutes for me and I live in North Austin. Exit 282 on I35... 50 miles is if you're in downtown Austin. I love the place.. I just quit my job in IT to go work for Mark Mark full-time. Bought my first trailer and will be moving into the ghetto soon :-) I'll be there 7 days a week starting shortly... W

Yeah I'm the same way. I'm 35 and still get carded for beer more often than not... The last time I was given children's prices (without asking!) I was 23! I showed up at my new dz in Texas when I was 23, and the dzo wanted to card me cuz I looked 12! A few years later, I had a cutaway, and I was sitting in the pickup truck with him while a couple of guys climbed a tree to rescue my main - and he handed me a beer. A few minutes later a cop pulls up asking what's going on and wanted to see my ID :-)

I completely agree. I'll take 2 out over 0 out any day of the week...

Yeah - I can't even fathom the tanning bed thing. Deliberately trying to get cancer? I could never do it. i get a bit of tan in the summer just by being outside, but I could never ever lay out and bake. The people who do tend to look very fake to me.. It doesn't look particularly good I don't think... Its funny - when I was in high school a good friend of mine believed in the tanning beds and laying out and she always had a good tan even in the winter. I never did any of that. We were both out somewhere - and we were both 17 - and someone confused her for my mother.. She looked that much older and her skin was so much more baked than my pale white skin. It amused the heck out of me - pissed her off. I can't even how imagine how old she must look now since she looked 30 at 17..

Question about Far's and intentional cutaway's?
faulknerwn replied to Rdutch's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I've got 3 rigs where Jumpshack sewed on a place to stow an extra set of D-rings for intentional cutaways. Have a real nice cutaway system which hangs off of the chest strap. I normally just leave facing the tail and deploy the pilot chute and bag that I left holding onto. I can cutaway either/both of the mains that I have then freely without interference. Works quite well. W -
Smaller Canopy same loading...
faulknerwn replied to YISkyDive's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
Descend quicker yes, fly forward faster no. In big-way CRW formations, we always put the big-boys up top and in the middle - because their parachutes fly faster and are floatier. The smaller canopies go on the outside corners, because that's where you want slow-flying parachutes because you don't want the corners outflying the center. In CRW, we've pretty well standardized on a 1.3-1.375 wing-loading on our Lightnings, and I'm on a 113. Practically everyone flies faster than my parachute. Comparative to the others, my canopy is slow and sinky. W -
Some people at work got a free Mac Mini that way. I tried but could never get enough people to sign up.. Ah well. W

Smaller Canopy same loading...
faulknerwn replied to YISkyDive's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
From my experiences in CRW, the bigger canopy will fly faster and be floatier, while the small canopy will turn faster and be more "twitchy." The lines/body of the jumper create more drag comparably on the smaller canopy than the large. I know that my small CRW canopy is slower than those of equivalent loadings on bigger canopies... -
I wish I could - I had a blast the last time I came up to Lodi. And I do have vague recollections of a party at Craig's house :-) I just quit my job in the rat race to be a dz bum all summer so I figure I'm gonna be broke for a while! I am organizing a 2-way CRW competition at my dz at its grand-opening celebration on Memorial day. I expect mainly locals to enter so experienced dogs could do really well :-) W

A little bit of everything on the stereo - its such a nice bird... :-) We just gotta get another pilot out here so I can drag Mark out and make him do CRW with me :-) W

90 knots? Ouch! That'll brutalize you on a Lightning.. I've got my new dz owner/pilot trained well - he's throwing us out of the PAC 750 at close to 60 knots :-) I love it! W

Start here young grasshopper: http://crwdog.servebeer.com/CRWdog/NCB.html

That is without a doubt true. And trust me - we're in Texas - where "he needed killin" is a justifiable excuse for homicide :-) W
-
Exactly! I think a ride just breaks a reserve in right :-) One of my Tempo's has 8 rides on it - I feel more comfortable with it now than when it was new - its like an old friend... I've actually had to use a reserve that was older than I was - one made in 1969.. It still worked fine, although I'd recommend more modern squares :-) Nothing to be afraid of with used reserves - most people just sell them with the container and not separately. W

Most excellent! Very cool!

You should have stopped by and pay us a visit while you were in Texas! We're a friendly drop zone with lots of beer :-)
