I'd rather have a "beware of Dog" sign with a dog that barks loud than clipping the dogs vocal chords hoping to surprise the crook. There are scenarios that work both ways. I believe it's less likely I would be a victim with a barking dog.

I agree, open carry is much more of a deterent. No, not really. With OC, the criminals know *exactly* who is armed and who is not. With CC, they don't know who *might* be armed. Criminals will always seek out the easiest target. Seeing one person armed and another one unarmed, it's more likely they will go for the easiest score.

Deregulate the markets! What could possible go wrong....again?

I couldn't agree more. Those big ole mean Bankers were simply giving people what they wanted and the politicians were milking it for all the votes it would get them by showing how much they cared. -

I sincerely believe that the seeds of the whole thing lay in the tax break for mortgage interest. It created a disincentive for the middle class to hold equity in their homes. Fannie and Freddie may (did) contribute to debt holding by those who should not have been given credit, and excessive credit to many more, but the tax code led to the massive move in home equity from the middle class to the banking sector. I disagree with any long term government subsidies. -

I'm very aware of TARP and I have always opposed any bailouts. Businesses rise and fall on their own merit. This is the huge mistake the present admin is incapable of understanding.. -

Can you point to the specific legislation to back up your claim? -

It played a role. But, what happened to taking responsibility for your own actions? The banks made their own decisions. Why should they not be held responsible for the decision they made? You are displaying decisively liberal traits. Just because bad behaviour was encouraged, does not excuse the bad behaviour. I didn't say that was the only reason or that banks shouldn't be held responsible. Create many strawmen lately? Until we institute some major overhaul in banking rules, we are destined to repeat the current scenario again. Only an idiot would think all our financial problems were caused by GWB. -

Do you have any idea of what a derivative is? Or know what a REIT is? -

Yep, all Bush's fault. Had nothing to do with the government getting involved with real estate lending via Freddie and Fannie. -

It does? What does "it" say? -
Hey, we all benefit from the lower crime rate. wow. I was thinking the same thing. I guess the veneer has been stripped away.

Best protection for your home is a sawed off shotgun. You don't have to aim it in darkness. Just point it in the general direction. The screams of pain will allow the second shot to be more accurate.

Wow. It's legal in your country, now? What do you mean, now? It'd never been illegal to join a gang. Just illegal to commit crimes, violate RICO statutes or not pay taxes even if monetary gains are from illegal activities.
-
Redundant. Both the military and the police are gangs. Right up until the point you need them. Then attitudes change really quick.
-
3. Join a gang.

I think you missed my point. We are presented with mostly lawyers as our choice of candidates regardless of political affiliation.
-
One of the problems with the U.S. political system IMO is that it is dominated by lawyers and they are supported by the different legal organizations and their lobbyists. They take care of each other. This is one of the reasons our healthcare costs are out of control. Any attempt at capping the amount of an award for a successful lawsuit is quickly quashed by politicians who get much of their support from the ABA. If we had a greater diversity in whom our choices are for elected office, we would likely have greater protection against frivolous lawsuits and smaller awards for medical malpractice.

I think a lot has been made over McCains comments that we could be in Iraq for 100 years. I think he was referring to a presence much like we have in Korea, Japan, Germany etc. I do not think McCain envisioned a war for 100 years. I think he felt that withdrawing US troops before Iraq was capable of providing their own security was a big mistake. Only time will tell if he was correct.
-
Why do you think McCain would have us deeply involved in Iraq?
-
Yep, it's all Bush's fault.

Lets review this logic. Chicago had a crime problem and so they banned guns. Chicago continued to have a crime problem. Some people, like yourself believe that the Chicago crime guns are all coming from the suburbs. Does that now constitute justification to ban guns in the suburbs, where there isn't a crime problem? And if they did so, and Chicago still had a crime problem after that, what next? Would you want to ban guns in neighboring states? How many law-abiding people should have to forfeit their gun rights in this ever-widening ban, to try and solve the problem with Chicago's criminals? Maybe Chicago should just crack down on their own criminals, instead of everyone else who isn't guilty of anything. I don't wish to ban guns, as you well know. I just want to make it far more difficult for nutters and convicted felons to get them. Great, now tell us how you propose making it more difficult.
