I was under the impression that the name horseshoe malfunction comes from the fact that the canopy/lines are connected by two points (PC&risers) to the jumper forming a kind of a horseshoe shape hence the name horseshoe malfunction. If its just the PC&bridle that are entangled with the jumper and the container is closed there won't be a loop of stuff forming that shape which would be why that wouldn't be called a horseshoe malfunction. Can I jump with a spinal fusion?
Arvoitus replied to spencersmith233's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Can your back take an opening like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XJKtzidSmiE ? I fractured a rib in the process and my upper back was in pain for about 4 months afterwards. Your rights end where my feelings begin. -
It only records the last 400 minutes of freefall. So depending on whether you're recording canopy+FF or just FF and the types of jumps you're doing you'll have something like 50-200 last jumps saved. I have mine set for canopy+FF and it has the last 120 or so jumps recorded. One reason your CRW jumps may not be recorded is that if the dive type is set to something like freefly or something similar and then the device won't record the jump if you do a hop'n'pop style jumps, since its expecting you to have proper freefall before it will start recording. I usually have it always on SLOW. This way I have to pull really fast to make it miss the jump. Your rights end where my feelings begin.

A better way out of line twist!
Arvoitus replied to JohnDeere's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Nice video--what is the canopy and what is the wingloading on it? Looks like it is flying pretty level and not spinning/diving. Its a 170 sqft Sabre 2 loaded roughly at 1.23:1. The video I saw of a jumper using the technique was done with a 88 sqft cross-braced, elliptical canopy loaded at 2.3:1. Also the canopy is spinning/diving when the jumper undoes the twists. Note : I'm not saying that you should definitely do this if you're spinning/diving on a highly loaded x-braced elliptical canopy. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5FD2I8OqbS0 Your rights end where my feelings begin. -
A better way out of line twist!
Arvoitus replied to JohnDeere's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I remember reading this thread a long time(2 years) ago but I completely forgot about his method. However I recently saw video of jumper using this method and happened to get a line twist on wing suit jump just few days later. So I decided to try this out and I really liked how well it worked : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eaYX8pKLhhk Your rights end where my feelings begin. -

I haven't even tried using my wings to untwist line twists because I just assumed that my wings are too small and my canopy too docile that its faster to just do something else. Your rights end where my feelings begin.

Actually I found it easier to get out of line twists by forcing the twists into the risers. Like this. Your rights end where my feelings begin.

What is the refresh rate on the GPS in iPhone? I have a HR-monitor with a GPS which has a rate of 1 Hz and for freefall its horrible, actually useless. Your rights end where my feelings begin.

You rarely have to untwist them if you never let go of your toggles after you grab them since they can't get twisted in the first place. You just have to set the toggles back to the risers after you land. I've got over 400 jumps on my canopy and I've untwisted the steering lines maybe 2 or 3 times(I had let the toggles loose after grabbing them). I've never had twisting on the steering lines. To get the subtitles to match the video you can either edit the duration of the video to match the subtitles or adjust the subtitles. If the video starts before the subtitles (camera turned on before flysight) then you can just crop the video from the beginning. If its the other way around then you'll need to adjust the subtitles with a subtitle tool. You can something like this. The reason the video is so large is that by default there is no compression selected for the output. You can select the compression method from Video->Compression in Virtualdub. If you have XVid installed then that is one that you should consider using. Your rights end where my feelings begin.

Yes from Video->Filters click Add and you should have a list of all the filters available. From that list (towards the bottom) you should find the filter 'subtitler'. Choose that and click Ok and you should get a dialog to select the SSA-file. Your rights end where my feelings begin.

I guess, whats a 'pseudo sci-fi' movie? Me. I already have a wingsuit and I could very well be in a DZ near you. Your rights end where my feelings begin.

I read the part and thought that you were saying that the worst case in SL is a premature, but re-reading I guess you didn't mean that. Your rights end where my feelings begin.

Or maybe its just natural selection. People who would pull off 270's badly never progress to the point where they could try to pull off a 270 because they break themselves with 90's and 180's? Also mentally its different. In a less then ideal situation a jumper might just go for 90 since 'you know its just a 90 degree turn', whereas 270 requires more commitment to perform. Bill, thanks for explanation. There is important difference between SL and this "method". SL is not connected to canopy but only to pin and free bag. Which means that any snag of the static line to any part of the plane or any part of instructor in the worst case may result in a bit premature opening of the main - and indeed nothing happens. However in IAD... PC and bridle are connected to main canopy - if PC or bridle snag to any part of the plane means that the part of the canopy remains connected to plane or to instructor and this is a different situation than SL snag. This may result in premature opening on the door and snag of the PC, bridle or other part of the canopy to the plane. Therefore I think this method induces more risks than SL. I'm guessing you haven't seen this video : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AEewo8M---Y Your rights end where my feelings begin.

VirtualDub does not natively support MP4-files which GoPro produces. You'll either need to use some other program to convert them into a format VD will accept or use an import plugin for VD. Edit: I realized that maybe I should've included instructions on how to get VD to load your GoPro footage. First install: http://sourceforge.net/projects/mp4cam2avi/ it will convert the MP4-file into an AVI-file (doesn't recompress the video just changes to container format). Then install (so that VD can decode the video data): http://sourceforge.net/projects/ffdshow-tryout/ if you're running a 64-bit VD on 64-bit machine then you need to install 64-bit version of ffdshow from here. If you get an error saying 'Couldn't locate decompressor for format H264 unknown' when trying to load the converted AVI-file then you most likely have mixed up the VD and ffdshow versions (64-bit vs. 32-bit). Edit2: Don't you get the SSA-file from Paralog if you (after choosing the jump you want) click File->Export->Template based, then choose for template file 'jump_profile_gps.ssa' from directory subtitles, choose Output directory and press OK. VirtualDub doesn't have the SSA-filter by default so you'll have to download that too and it only works with the 32-bit version of VirtualDub. Your rights end where my feelings begin.

I watched it last night in the local theater in 3D and I would definitively recommend seeing it in 3D even if its only for those two 30 second and 10 second scenes. After all how many times do you get to see actual real wingsuits in 3D in a multimillion Hollywood production? Your rights end where my feelings begin.

I've got 3 jumps with contact lenses, gatorz and with a factory diver. - Balloon jump, exited on my back and went on my belly, no problem. - FF from plane, sit and head down no big issues, eyes teared up a bit. - WS from plane, fine for first few seconds, after a while lost both contact lenses. However I've lost contact lenses whilst wingsuiting with tight well fitting ordinary goggles too. Your rights end where my feelings begin.

Umm, I call Bull Shit. Why? He used about 4 mins 42 sec per jump where as Jay Stokes used about 2 mins 15 secs per jump when he did his record. Beatnik used over twice as much time as Jay so I don't see why it couldn't be true that he did 202 jumps in 16,5 hrs. Your rights end where my feelings begin.

what is your order of post opening procedures?

I don't do that. Don't do that either. After I'm satisfied with direction the canopy is flying to. Your rights end where my feelings begin. -
Two questions regarding maintenance
Arvoitus replied to shah269's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Why is this embarrassing? Are we talking "Long time no see" as in, more than 6 months, or "Long time no see" as in 4 months? If its the former, OK, but the latter, I wish I'd video'd it now, but I unpacked a main following the winter shutdown (early Dec. to early Feb here) and it was a solid block. We even threw it around, and it didn't "uncube" itself... sure, 120mph winds should fix that, but I wasn't exactly keen, given as I had to pry it open with my fingers. J Its not the fact they had it repacked which is embarrasing, its the fact that they couldn't do it themselves. Your rights end where my feelings begin. -
