I have no idea about the others, but the McDonalds one was actually a legitimate case. The coffee they were serving was MUCH hotter than the industry standard, and when it was spilled (as mentioned) it caused THIRD degree burns requiring an 8 day stay in the hospital and skin grafts. She asked McDonalds to pay her medical bill, which they refused, at which point she sued them for the cost of the bill. Details here: http://www.lectlaw.com/files/cur78.htm

Cost-per hour and time to altitude questions..in the BONFIRE
bfilarsky replied to someday's topic in The Bonfire
I know that with smaller aircraft, a 4 seat training airplane is currently $100/hr at the club I fly at. You can rent a 3 seat helicopter of comparable size (less performance) for $235/hr. So a comparably sized helicopter is about 2-3x the cost of the airplane. Not sure if larger sizes keep the same ratio or not, but Helicopters = $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ When any vehicle climbs, it uses power to overcome its drag. Any leftover power turns into gravitational potential energy. So if you have an engine that produces twice the power that the drag does at climb speed, you'll get a climb rate of X ft/min. If you make the power of the engine 3 times the power of the drag at climb speed, you'll have a climb rate of 2X ft/min. IOW, by adding 50% power (and therefore fuel burn) you have doubled your rate of climb. Therefore, unless I'm neglecting some factor I haven't considered, you'll get better and better fuel efficiency in a skydiving operation the more power you have. It goes without saying that less weight and/or less drag will have great benefits as well. -
"Surely you aren't serious?" "I am serious. And don't call me Shirley"

And you think a low pull contest is dangerous? It's okay, it was a freefly jump. exactly jk

I can vouch that there are plenty of people at SDSD who will spend time with you to go over questions you have. Just a few days ago I asked Blake a few questions about Canopy control and got a very thorough answer to all my questions. Just find an instructor who isn't on a load RIGHT NOW and ask

? A guy with 54 jumps won't take a guy with nearly double that number because "he's a newbie?" Not because "he's a newbie," but because we are all newbies and 5 newbies in the sky together was about all that any of use were willing to mess with. Didn't want to make it a 6 way of newbies.
-
wasn't quite sure man.... there wasn't really any sarcasm in your voice. I was hoping you were joking! btw the only reason you couldn't jump with us was cuz they already had a 5-way of low jump number newbs going - we didn't want to add any more low jump number bodies to the mix. I'll jump w/ you next time I see you out there..... I'll just pull before you
-
Someone asked me out at the DZ the other day if I wanted to play a game of low-pull chicken. WTF?!! That's got to be the dumbest thing I've ever heard!!! The guy seemed dead serious - maybe he just wasn't good at conveying sarcasm. Anyone ever heard of such a thing?

Probably in the neighborhood of 10* C this time of year at 13k here in SD. If you really want to know, go here http://www.aviationweather.gov/products/nws/winds/?area=sanfrancisco&fint=06&lvl=lo and follow the grid to SAN and 12k - the number will look something like this: 1907+11, which indicates winds at the altitude as 190 @ 7 knots, temp 11*C. Subtract a few degrees since we're jumping at 13.5k (Winds aloft number are MSL, we jump 13k AGL + appx field elev. of 500 ft)

:6:2 Held a sit for pretty much the entire jump for the first time, got my B license

Short a car battery through it. That will supply much more than the needed 13 amps, but it will be low voltage so you shouldn't have any danger from electrical shock. The fuse should blow instantly. If it doesn't, don't keep the load on it for much longer than one second. You don't want the battery to blow up!

While that is logical, there are a bunch of idiots in the world. The dropzone has to cover its ass.
