That sucks - sorry to hear that.

What happens when the computer crashes - or the electrical system dies?

Nah, its not likely to go down in an earthquake because its a suspension bridge. Rigid bridges are the ones that have problems in earthquakes. Suspension bridges just need a little wind http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P0Fi1VcbpAI Note also how much movement the bridge can make without falling apart. No way a truss bridge could do that.

I know that the past has not shown very many people to be right that said "never," so I won't, but lets at least say a very long time! I don't see it happening while I'm alive, and I certainly hope I don't! As a pilot, I like having lots of sky to myself and others who have gone through a training process much more rigorous and expensive than any drivers. I don't want your average Joe Blow idiot to be flying around - not as a pilot or as a skydiver!

All-American Boogie '08 in Davis.... Cuz it was my first and only (so far) Boogie! Got my A-license at the Boogie, jumped the Perris Skyvan (tailgates rock! even if the plane is loud and climbs like a sick pig), and met some really cool people!

That's the worst case scenerio for aircraft mid-air collisions - I would imagine its the same for skydiver/aircraft collisions. The whole idea with VFR flying is See and Avoid. That means that everyone has a responsibility to see and avoid other aircraft. ATC is not in any way responsible for keeping VFR aircraft separated from one another, except in Bravo airspace (not very common to be jumping in, its the stuff around big airports like O'hare, JFK, etc). IOW, you are just as responsible, according to the FAA, to see and avoid aircraft as they are to you, and ATC is not required to tell you that they are there. Class Echo airspace means absolutely nothing. The only difference between Class Echo and Class Golf (uncontrolled) airspace, is that IFR traffic is routed through it. Most of the airspace below 18,000 ft in the country is Class E, and you don't need a radio or transponder to fly through it below 10,000 ft.

Assuming constant deceleration from the moment of impact until complete stop, you would decelerate over .6 seconds, with a deceleration of approximately 85 m/s^2, or 8.5 g's. Granted, in real life, you'll be closer to 1 g just after you hit, and at a much higher deceleration as you approach the bottom, but it seems it would be survivable. edit: chances of attempt will go up with an increase in consumption of ethanol (beer), and probability of survival will decrease

Interesting stuff man - congrats on your goals! You gonna be jumping this Sun?

What was the setup on that exactly? That looked pretty cool! Some sort of 3 ring release tied to the Mr. Bill's tandem hooks and Sluggo's Risers?
-
I fourth that! Awesome movie!

It might vary by state or carrier, but when I had shit stolen out of my car it was under homeowners - auto insurance wouldn't cover it.

I still think he should've thrown the bastards out from altitude

Are you always nervous when you jump?
bfilarsky replied to npgraphicdesign's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Not unless I'm doing something new, big, or different. I know exactly what you mean. I felt the same thing when i did my first 13k h&p. I knew at the time that it didn't make sense (since I would be comfortable in free fall at that point), but it was still a bit scary nonetheless. Awesome though! -

ditto One of the things I miss, now that I'm in SoCal. The weathers always too damn nice here!!! -
I'm with you on that one. Although I do love the smell of Jet fuel, too.

Theres plenty of CFI jobs around. The only problem is most don't pay squat.
-
damn Don, you're killing me! I wanted to go so bad! I have to see the evidence, though. Sounds like a fun jump

No complaints about the technical side of the service - it works great! Movie starts playing real quick, and quality is good. Not too happy with the selection, though. Lots of 2nd rate movies with bad actors, although there are a few decent ones.
