  1. Whether emotionally driven or not, if you would have different if the "bad person" in question was your son, then there's no universality there: it's hypocritical. It certainly can help with the answer. If you consider your wife was the murderer, would you want her forgiven by those from whom she took someone away? If so, why? Considering these kinds of questions is difficult at best, but it helps tremendously in evaluating one's own ethics, particularly with regard to universality (and hypocrisy). It was a general throwout as one of many possibilities, not a fix-all. I'm not one to be strawmanned.
  2. You're asking for it, missie.
  3. I had to scroll up to find what the fuck this was about.... Hey, she's a home girl! From right here in A-LA-BA-MA! She may be, and RL loves it.
  4. Problem is, we don't know. What we do know is that people (Cheney, et al) are running big-time interference, which raises suspicions. Well, that's just it: Who defines legitimate? Where's the oversight? What happens when it's just vocal dissidents having their arms twisted? Or just plain bystanders? And there's no need to twist arms; we have an arsenal of legal and internationally accepted interrogation methods at our disposal that have proven effective. There's something more to this whole debacle than just intelligence gathering. Awesome. We're on the same page there. Again, where's the oversight? If treating the detainees according to international standards is not made a priority, is not enforced, and/or is not externally overseen, shit will go down. Period. We're deviating... this piece of tangent began with your stating this: I disputed the moral nature of your shitbag-kicked-around comment. How do we know they're shitbags? For what should they be kicked around? It seems you narrowed it down to resistance (with which I agree) or for intel purposes (which I disputed above). I also disputed the bar fight analogy, as it's a much, much different scenario than a detainee being kicked around by guards or other staff. Did we miss anything?
  5. Nope. I'd probably be arguing against every moral and ethical value I have, in that situation. So, this kinda takes away any hint of universality in your approach. So, does confronting that as a possibility change your mind at all, or do you just stick out your chin and grin and indulge in hypocrisy? It's truly worthwhile to do role switcheroos when considering ethical questions, not only for the sake of edifying your own code, but also making strides in empathy. Sweet method, it is. Not necessarily: it's not a with him or without him sorta deal; rather than getting caught into the binary thinking trap, you can explore other options and possibilities. By considering yourself and your loved ones in such a hypothetical situation, you can find what these other possibilities are (justice, rehabilitation, conciliation, etc.), and perhaps come up with a better, more universal approach to the whole thing.
  6. Would you feel the same way if the bad person in question was your son?
  7. Ha!!! I thought I was the only one dumb enough to do something like that!!!! It really did feel soapy as it ate away my flesh! WOOOOOOOOOOOSSSSSSSSSHHHHHHHHHH!
  8. With the sheer number of girls whose nethers I've seen onstage, on video, or on the 'net (basically, those who've been there and done that), am I the only one getting the feeling like those who've never participated in adult entertainment are members of a shrinking minority? Nothing against those who do; in fact, I'm rather quite fond of y'all, actually. It's just getting weird when I pretty regularly run into girls off to whom I'm sure I've jacked it at one time or another.
  9. Does it matter? I seem to recall reading about a similar question's being raised by stakeholders in an older conservation topic: whaling. It was obvious at a time that certain whale populations were dwindling, but figures, statistics, and science were imprecise as of yet; however, it was undeniable that the populations were dwindling. The question of whether it was just a natural cycle was brought up when discussion began on curbing the hunt of these animals, sponsored by some nasty agenda-pushing tree-hugging villains seeking to prevent their extinction, damn them. After all, as long as the whaling companies were making money, workers in the whale industry were gainfully employed, and the consumers of whale products were happy, who the fuck could give a shit? Fact: Earth's heating up. Fact: CO2 (among other) emissions contribute to (accelerates) the warming. Fact: if we don't curb our growing emissions volume, we will accelerate our acceleration of the warming. We don't yet know, however, exactly how much emissions are effectively accelerating warming. Some tell of doomsday scenarios, others are more moderate, and still others claim it's negligible: indeed, as it was with the whales. The question is, how long do we wait until we do something about it?
  10. Teeming with sigline material. Thanks!
  11. AlexCrowley had quite the gem of a post recently that summed this up. Funny, but sad. Perhaps if we had a laughing icon wearing a hockey helmet and sitting in a wheelchair bibbed with a beach towel in front of a cafeteria table with a plate of shitty-excuse-for-food...
  12. One needs Google for this??? I got the joke (without a hint of deceptiveness), and thought it was freakin' hilarious. Even though it would sour the humor a bit, I can see the good a link would do, though.
  13. How do you say, "lame," in French? Or, more specifically, "laaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaame?"
  14. If I act up, then yeah. If they have a reason, then yeah, they can kick my ass. If it's completely baseless and for no reason other than to just do it, then that's wrong (same applies to soldiers). I didn't ask about reason; I just said at their discretion. Here, I'll give you a more specific question: Should law enforcement be able to, in the situation in which you've been arrested for matching the description in a hit-and-run, kick you around a bit until you confess you did it? Why or why not? So they guy who's had 10 shots a couple pitchers of beer equally can defend himself against you who's had a few beers? Yeah, I know where I'll put my money. Straw. Man. Ever seen a bar fight first hand? I can tell you that most patrons in most bars I've been to (of which there are many, especially taking into account that I don't drink at all) are nowhere near that hammered. And none of the bar fights which I've witnessed (same disclaimer goes) have involved someone that trashed. It's usually a few hits that quickly turns into a grapple, takedown, then rolling about bloodying each other until it gets broken up. A bit different than a detainee restrained in a chair, hmm? That is not a bar fight. WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOSSSSSSSSSSSSSSHHHHH!
  15. For whom? I think it's just dandy.
  16. So what's wrong with a little yang with my yin? Go ahead... you know you wanna be naughty.
  17. Is mid-back not enough for you, darling???
  18. Judge it based upon what kind of feel I cop.
  19. If you could be so kind as to define forgiveness for us, that'd be great. Again, it'll proactively clear up some potential misunderstandings.
